So there will be a higher end PS4 model, it is risky move I hope they though that out well and by that I don't mean financials persons looking at charts, estimates and pools. As I expected the systems should be close enough yet it requires few extra efforts on the publishers sides.
I dislike the choices made by the manufacturers this gen more and more, especially if the two tiers approach was considered (such moves might be tough way ahead) clearly SOC were no go, it would be so much simpler with discrete CPU and GPU.
I still favor Sony choice for the PS4 over MSFT by a mile, even if they had ended with 4GB of RAM)

Andrew House confirms the new console's existence:
(to whomever subscribes Financial Times)

Andrew House, president and global chief executive of Sony Interactive Entertainment, told the Financial Times that the “high-end PS4” would be more expensive than the current $350 version.

“It is intended to sit alongside and complement the standard PS4,” he said. “We will be selling both [versions] through the life cycle.

(...)

The new console, which is codenamed “Neo”, will target hardcore gamers, he said, as well as consumers with a 4K television set looking for more high-resolution content.

However, in a move that may disappoint some fans, Mr House said that Sony would not be unveiling its new console next week and refused to say when or at what price the unit would go on sale. “We want to ensure we have a full range of the best experiences on the new system that we can showcase in their entirety,” he said.

Nonetheless, he downplayed concerns that the move would cause interoperability problems between the old and new PS4 hardware.

“All games will support the standard PS4 and we anticipate all or a very large majority of games will also support the high-end PS4,” he said.

Summary of what is known officially:

1. Not showing at E3, no release date
2. Not a replacement for PS4. Sony will be doing a low end-high end model.
3. More expensive than PS4 ($350 right now)
4. All the rumours are proving right--4K output, cross compatible

Based on the above, it looks like 2017 is looking a lot more likely.

Also a bit surprising they are doing a multi-sku model. I thought Neo would be essentially the replacement, like iPhone 7 to 6S. To me, the actual visual difference between the two won't be that great to warrant selling side by side.

This looks very much like a market experiment than the next great console.

we already see differences in quality between 1,2 and 1,8TF, so going from 1,8 to >4TF, with certainly a better CPU too, should bring some nice enhancements.
two models at the same time is a good choice IMO, to please graphics lovers, and to please casual who just want to play the same games with a cheaper solutions, and parents buying a console for young kids.

They still need to launch soon if the focus is 4k compatibility.

Which journalist said first it wouldn't be at E3? I am now very interested in what they said about the launch window. :D

House said it would be more that the $350 current price of the PS4.

How much more though?

$400 would be great but $450 may not be, depending on how much UHD Blu Ray players are at the time the Neo launches, if it turns out Neo is mostly about video 4K and doesn't really enhance games that much.

If it's $500 or more, then it may have limited market impact.

The article states the “high-end PS4” would be more expensive than the current $350 version.
Would it read as being more expensive than the current version (that happens to be $350 right now), or that it would be more expensive than $350 (that happens to be where the current version is at)?

And even if that's not the case, 28nm is extremely mature (i.e. yields, volume). With everyone demanding 14/16nm supply, fabs will want to keep those older 28nm facilities occupied, which could translate to lower fees in the long run.

I think the fact that Sony is selling both together will have impact on the price. This is Sony's market segmentation at play here.

Even if all Neo did was play 4K Blu-Ray and output at 4K natively (HDMI 2.x) with no other enhancements, $50 would be too little differene. Why would anyone buy an OG PS4 if the difference is so small?
