So the Neo is underclocked to hit 4.2TF - they could run at stock (with a bigger new case) and hit near where MS are targeting anyway
and ms would have a year to hit even further ahead ?

It makes no sense to compare the neo with a console releasing a year later. Anything sony could do , MS could do to keep the performance delta the same. Oh Sony clocked higher , well MS now clocked higher too . Sony put in Zen lite cores , well MS put in Zen + cores and so on.

If neo is hitting this fall , AMD is going to have to start producing chips in the next month or so. The time for changes is over at this point.

Unless they planned from the start to launch on 10nm next year, they won't get any more performance per watt, or performance per die area, by launching a year later still on 14nm.

There is no Zen Lite. There is no Zen Plus. There is only Zuul.

10nm in 2017 for a gigantic chip ? Is intel letting them use their fabs before they even put out a chip or something ?

Also I have to disagree about getting more performance per watt or performance by die area a year later. Just look at the drastic changes Nvidia went through on the 28nm process. The 9x0 line offers huge improvements over the 7x0 line up in both those areas

We have Radeon 370X since 2012. I still have a 7870 and it's fine. AMD won't do a different chip for this segment for a long time.
Maybe 40 CU unlocked model.

If using the same arch, yes

But...

Come on Ms be bold

I assume Vega is the same arch as Polaris, just bigger chip.

At this point (Polaris is not released yet) it´s not sure. There were talks of polaris being 12.0 and vega 12.1, but nothing concrete

Anyway, just pointing that they could improve per/watt with 14nm if they go the HBM route, not counting on it though

For Navi, as an aside - I am curious, anyone have any idea what "Nextgen Memory" could possibly be? What could they do to beat HBM2 that is actually off the drawing board?

Yes I agree new archs can bring better performance, but Vega is supposed to be the same GCN 4.0. The increased perf/watt on the graph would come from using HBM2. The next step is Navi which looks timed to be on 10nm.

Whatever Sony/MS planned, it would be a semi-custom design using the GCN 4.0 arch. There could be important efficiency differences based on their choice of memory and clocking. HBM2 is doubtful either way for cost reasons, it's just stupidly expensive in the short term even for high-end cards.

I'm curious how much time is necessary between the launch of a new architecture and the possibility of making a semi-custom design with that arch. Maybe there's no time for Polaris to be used in a 2016 console launch. This makes me think both consoles are 2017.

Is there any particular reason why there has to be a consumer card out before a custom part can be made/in development?

I don't know, I ask because the PS4/XB1 seem to be using GCN Gen 1, while the HD7790 launched early 2013 with GCN gen 2 and even TrueAudio. Heck I think even the 260 launched before PS4/XB1.

Oups, nevermind. I got confused by everyone using the 7850 as a comparison, which was 1.0
