If that's true, it's not that bad, because the PS2 cost between 500-580 euros here six years ago. Plus 40 euros on top of that for the mandatory memory card.

it is bad, infact its terrible, you just bent over and took it with the PS2 so you dont think its bad, but it is, bad, very bad.

What else could we have done? Not-buying ps2? Look what happened to the people who didn't buy PS2 - they got Xbox, which was even more expensive at launch.

So really, boicott is really not an option. Europeans will get higher prices, and will pay higher prices, cause they have no choice other than going through with importing a US machine, which, after all expenses are paid, would end up being almost as expensive as a Euro one.

No, but a passive atitude is almost assured. For 2007 ad least, PS2 is a good alternative, there are good games coming. HD era hasnt properly started here yet, so Wii might get a strong showing.

I know, we can do that NOW. But in the PS2 days, it was either that or DC - and that didn't go too well...

The things is, as far as I'm concerned 500-600 euros isn't that expensive. It's about a third of the usual salary here. It's all about perspective. ;) And if I remember correctly, the first PlayStation cost 500 euros here as well.

A third of someone's month salary is a bit much... But when you think about it, this thing will (should?) last for a long time, so if you spread the value over the amount of hours of fun you get out of it, then it's quite cheap. That's what a marketer would tell you anyway. Won't make you feel much better about that black hole in your wallet though...

UK£425 is not that much for me, i can easily afford it - especially now with my new job - but i don't know, i think i am just not seeing the value in it at the moment. I wouldn't be doing much with it. I could buy a PS3, a 360 and a Wii every month, but i won't because to me, the value is just not there. Whereas for lots of other people, who will be using them a lot, things are very different.

Did you bought it at that price?

And lets not forget - before or after buying a PS3 (or a 360), most people will be complelled to buy a HDTV. There is a lot of money changing hands here...

A steal

In Denmark the 60GB will be sold for 4.500 dkr, that is $789, a steal for me since i really really want to have access to real HD movies. If it wasn´t for HD i would most likely have waited until after summer before buying a PS3 mostly because i don´t really have the time to play the games right now (The Burning Crusade is enough :)).

Other prices: Standalone HD-DVD player costs $800, XBOX 360 Premium is $526, PS2 is selling for around $200,-. I bought my XBOX after the 360 was launched, $100 including two AAA games :))

well thats not a great example considering Microsofts Xbox 1 launch in europe was terrible. They also cut that price very quickly and allowed people to get refunds. I think you'd agree they're paying better attention with the Xbox360 and price conversion this time. Sony seems to not give a damn still. Just because they have abused europe in the past doesnt make it right this time. Thinking its a good deal because of that is literally like bending over and taking it.

Dont forget the cost of the cable.

Peripheral prices...

The motion-sensing SIXAXIS controller will retail for £34.99
the remote control for the machine's in-built Blu-ray player will cost £17.99
Also selling for £17.99 will be a choice of connection cables - HDMI, AV and component AV. The cheapest item on the announced list of peripherals is the S Video cable at £12.99.

My post was never about specific manufacturers, but how europeans just have to bend over and take it from everyone all the time (not that i'm against that!).

General Europe question - Isn't "VAT" a ~30% tax on all goods in EU?

If so wouldn't this explain the higher costs of ps3/xbox/wii?

It's around the 22% on average, but varies from country to country. The UK has VAT of 17.5%, yet the highest regional price in Europe (similar ot Ireland's price, but Ireland has higher tax).

As has been calculated elsewhere, the direct $ value of $600 is about £300 going by Google. Add 17.5% to that for about £350. For the 60 GB version. If they released the 20 GB version, that'd be under £300. Factoring in EU difficulties adding to costs, whatever they might be, and a £350 20 GB should be released, fairly priced, and quite competitive.

I think the price is based entriely on what they think this market perceives the value to be. As I've said before, the hardware probably is worth that, if you want a BRD player+games machine+other widgets, once they sort the OS out. However, there's competition to worry about, and if they can afford to sell PS3 at $600, they can afford to sell it at £300 and not look like ripoff merchants. The fact they're selling PS3 cheaper elsewhere shows they like taking the EU for a ride. Still, we have strong consumer laws that probably eat into their profits a fair bit. Maybe that's part of the EU markup?
