PS3 sales

I dont know how anyone can come to that conclusion when Microsoft/Nintendo are at huge price advantages over Sony. Point being anyone surprised at any sales has yet to see the real numbers start pooring in which traditionally happen at each consoles price cut. Essentailly we're still talking about launch prices in relation to Microsoft as well. Its all about perceived value, and if the cost is too high, sales will be low(er). Sony is in a worse (the worst) position realistically, assumption means nothing.

Draw no conclusions until the price cut battles have started and we get some more holiday sale numbers, right now what Microsoft is doing in comparison to last gen is simply impressive. Land certainly hasnt been claimed.

I guess that is something that has been better for MS this time around, they have been able to keep their launch price much longer this time around and didn't slice it after like a month like they did with the xbox1, so in that sense I guess one can say that they have done better. On the other hand I don't know how much the price will effect initially. No doubt, the cheaper the better, but I am sure initally all PS3 will be sold without a doubt, and lets not forget that the 20GB SKU is the smae price as the PS2 when launched, so for the Europeans that price range is really not as shocking as for the guys across the pond.

How long they will be able to keep selling the PS3 at that price though, especially if MS lowers theirs remains to be seen, but the playstation brand is extremely strong, but sure I don't see many parents bying it for their kids at that price range. Maybe MS does not really care so much about marketshare right now, but rather not lose to much money right now, and compete head to head when the PS3 launches here, by price cuts, and maybe by then they will have gone to lower nm scale and don't loose to much money by price cuts. We will see I guess...

I have no retail numbers what so ever, but I get the feeling that in the nordic countries, atleast Sweden, the 360 does quite well, mostly by looking at online stores and their top ranking game sales and so on, and I believe that the nordic countries is a region where MS definitely has a chance. Here in sweden we say that it is the most americanized country in the world, on a second place is the US:)...

With a net population smaller than nearly every state in the US and about the size of the Dreamcast userbase, maybe Microsoft doesn't want to spend the resources when the population limits the potential sales to......well considerably less than the US or Japan. I'm not sure how the laws are in Europe, but I'd imagine having so many countries in a small area causes additional complications (and costs) that MS doesn't have to deal with when selling to the US and Japan. (of course, most of those costs are probably already taken care of by the presence of a Windows division in all those countries)

Doesn't Sony have F1 exclusivity world wide?

They also sponsor UEFA so Euro 2008 should be a big promotional opportunity for them. Also a sponsor of Champions League too right?

Apparently Sony is investing a lot to have UK-produced content -- Heavenly Sword, Motorstorm, Killzone, presumably a game based on the London demo and others.

F1 rights up for sale at the end of next year. It will be Sony, MS or EA who gets them.

Sony's Champions League sponsorship this year is a little OTT. You can see what they aimed for BRAVIA alongside PS3 but since the delay they've just plastered a hastily put together PSP board in it's place. It's hideous.

Saw accounts in two different forums of people getting PS3s recently without Talledega Nights.

So that would indicate they've passed 500k perhaps, since they announced only that number of copies would be distributed for free. Just in time for the retail version to come out.

Can't recall if the TN was packed in for Japan as well?

No reports of it.

But if you go on eBay, it's hard to get any PS3 game for under $50 shipped, even opened ones.

Even poorly reviewed ones like NBA 07 (not NBA2K7).

However, few of those AAA software sales were for games on the new systems, as Wilson noted that PS3 and Wii games weren't flying off the shelves as much as expected. The tie-ratio--the average number of games sold per system--was 1.1 for the PS3, and 2.1 for the Wii. Wilson blamed the low numbers on people buying the systems on their own to turn around and sell them for a profit.

Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter also pointed out the tie-ratios, calling them "record lows" for new consoles. Despite that, Pachter expects the Wii and PS3 to play a significant role in year-over-year sales growth of 7-10 percent for the month, so long as Nintendo and Sony can get enough systems to retail and "the eBay effect" is suppressed.

360 initial tie rate was around 4 I believe.

Got to remember that only few people gambled with Xbox360 and got a fortune. Now its all coming back and the extra limited numbers of PS3 are only helping people to ebay it.

People have been getting theyr PS3's without talleda nights so atleast PS3 is over 500,000 shipped. No way for them to hit 1 million though...

Revisited, the whole process probably started the moment Nintendo showed off the Wiimote:

There are other patents describing this also, dating back to May 2005 (several months before Nintendo showed the Wiimote). There are also much older SCE patents going back years describing pointing devices with LEDs and a camera. So there's no guarantee about the commercialisation of this work, though all the pieces are in place w.r.t hardware between sixaxis and an eyetoy to make that happen if they wanted.

This is very different from Nintendo's implementation, in that the sensor and LED's are reversed. Sony have been experimenting with a camera reading an object's position in various ways, including props and in this case, an LED. An IR LED makes sense as it won't need much image processing to find it, unlike using visible light. Furthermore, unlike the Wiimote, this IR dot will only provide location and not orientation. It couldn't determine if the controller was pointing at the top or bottom of the screen.

TBH I don't think it's a terribly useful idea and I doubt it'll get implemented. For the games where the existing SIXAXIS motion control isn't sufficient, you'd probably want a very different style of controller better suited to props. The illustration in the patent may just be to give a rough example of implementation. An actual implementation might be a foam sword with LEDs in the handle and point - a controller with LEDs read by a camera on the game system.

i mentioned about the xbox doing very well here in nz ( + i assumed until now the xb360 will do as well )
but i was reading today in todays newspaper (sunday star times) in an article about wii + injuries the following
christchurch game enthusiast and manager of EB games, dan lagergren, said he had sold more wiis in a week than xbox360s since their launch in march
surprising since the gamecube tanked here
EB games is the largest game store chain in nz btw

FWIW, I just stopped at my local BB. They didn't any PS3s in today and they don't think they will get any until next year. They did get a bunch of Wiis and sold out in the first few minutes. Their stacks of 360s still exist (each time I go there are two stacks, one for core and other prem), but there are only few prems left and about 10-12 cores.

Its weird that people spread all this negativity but PS3's are still being outsold. And in crazy prices too :p

Not really. As others have noted before, Sony basically has 10 million sold based on name alone. Thats why even though X360 provides (so far) a much nicer package overall, it is an uphill battle for Microsoft.
