PS3 Pre-orders start TOMORROW

Are those confirmed prices? Certainly in Japan there's some variety in prices and first-party titles are $10 cheaper.

that is a good question

they could be placeholders as I also heard that 1st party would be $49.99 but I guess we'll know soon enough if this is correct.

Also, I thought Motorstorm was a launch title but perhaps they figured they would wait until they have Euorope and more NA units to sell it with?

SKU 270045 = Ridge Racer 7
Got there a minute after they opened and there were 10 people in line.
Whoever closed the store last night screwed something up, and their register
wasn't working to take deposits so they took names/phone #s on a list and said
they'd call when it was back online. I hung around the store for another 10 minutes
waiting to see if they'd get it fixed so I wouldn't have to come back.
When I left around 10:20, there were still 3 spots left. They didn't know how many
regular and premiums they were getting. I asked for a premium but I'm
#11 out of 16 for that store. Most of the people ahead wanted 60gb too,
so I may only get a 20gb model. As long as I get one at launch I'll be happy.

Freaking camping with a tint for pre-orders with only 15 hours notice? I said WOW!

I feel sorry for about 60% of that line. :(

PS3 pre-order, serious business!

I went out hunting 2 hours before opening to several gamestops, all had more than a dozen people. I think I'll just wait till March like I did with X360. Too much irritation to try and snag a system at launch for somewhat limited game selection when most of the best titles come out months later. Moreover, given the fiasco with X360 hardware defects in the initial shipment, I figure it's probably best to wait anyway. I'll just play GoW for a few months (plus HL2 Ep2 when it comes out)

Even if I did get a pre-order in, I'd be skeptical about it being filled anyway. I really don't trust the idea that each store will only get 8-16 units (probably 8) and that the employees of the store won't conspire to snag a few or have friends snag them. The amount of profit these people can make from selling on eBay is too tempting. I bet sustems will easily go for well over $1000, which for a young person working in a store is high profit, even if they get terminated, it's probably 2 months salary given taxes.

The only thing that bothers me is I want a BD player and I really don't want to buy a standalone BD player at this point.

ebgames/gamestop has a limit of 2 employees per store that can purchase ps3's.

I'm aware of that. Good luck enforcing it. If I worked in such a store, all I'd do is put my buddy's name down on the pre-order list before anyone else. No one is guaranteed to get anything, so stores could plausibly deny to people on the tail end of the list that their order can't be filled.

Let's see how many people turn on up launch day complaining that they didn't get PS3s even though they were the first batch of 6 people at a store to sigh up.

If thats the case a lot of people are going to be losing their jobs. Rumor has it corporate is calling the stores and giving strict instructions on this. Anyone caught giving more than 2 is getting fired.

Well for us, the lady at the register asked everyone if they wanted the 20gb unit or the 60gb unit before they purchased. I noticed some people saying what you said, "Already spending 500, mind as well get the 60gb unit." The SKU numbers on the reciept were actually different for each configuration each person got, so there definately was some sort of notice of how many of each they are going to receive. Atleast thats what I think.

Funny thing was, sounded like there was a couple ebay'ers in the bunch, talking to a couple people and it really seemed they had no idea about the console except that it was a playstation 3 and what the price was. Some people were commenting on that they didnt know what games were coming out. One person I talked to didnt even know there was a wireless controller before he looked at the PS3 ad on the wall. One guy brought his parents to get a 2nd one, another guy brought his girlfriend.

It will be interesting to see if my number 8 in line gets cut down to a lower spot, the lady mentioned before she started taking any orders at all that if you were here with a family members buying a second ps3 for you that they would somehow find out, and would issue calls out in a couple weeks if there happens to be more than one order per household. Kinda weird I thought, but no biggie to me personally.

Another thing I noticed is when talking to a few people waiting next to me, that some people didnt even know nintendo had a new system coming out. I told them about it and the price and they were like 'I'll have to see about that', pointed to the Wii Ad on the wall when they let us inside and I heard some quite funny comments. "Is that a remote? the hell is that?" ...etc.

Overall it was a pretty interesting experience (got to talk with people from all walks of life on gaming and other stuff), and very organized on ebgames/gamestop's part. Though of course there were people who came late and got rejected, bummer for them. Glad I wont have to go through this again next month.

PS2 sold more than 2 million @ launch. ;)
like 100 million+ (atleast shipped numbers anyway).

Yes that is very true. Gamers know of Wii but if you ask the extreme casual gamer, the one who has a pS2, but is not that into video games, my experience is they will have a general idea of PS3, or at least the concept of "the next Sony console" is an easy one for them to grasp, but if you ask them about Wii you will be met with furrowed brows and they dont recognize it. Hmm, interesting for the supposed mass market console.

Oh and I did look, I have 272 SKU. Honestly I probably would have preffered the 20GB, as it give you $100 more room for profit margin.

Those instructions are for employee purchases. I'm talking about hiring a friend or guy off the street to put his name on the list. All they have to do is use the guy's credit card and identification and pre-add him to the list before everyone else who pre-ordered that day. It will look completely legitimate and it is unlikely that the people who stood in line will remember 1 month later the names of everyone who was in line so they could not dispute it.

This was posted on ps3forums and i found it really interesting:

To those who plan on selling on eBay, I work for them and there is a little rule we follow that most people don't know about. If the owner of a trademarked item contacts eBay and asks them to remove the listing of their product and the MSRP of said product is $500 or greater, eBay will do it. Since the MSRP of the 360 and any other game system was less than $500, there was nothing the owners of the product could do about it.

This rule started out of courtesy to protect brand. Trademarked items from Prada, Coach and LV were being sold at eBay well under market value, so these companies approached eBay for help. They argued that their brand was suffering due to the cheap prices, and the rule to take down trademarked items that had a value of $500 or more at the request of the trademark holder was created. I could see Sony arguing that the outrageous prices would hurt their brand, and since the high end PS3 has an MSRP above $500, if Sony asks us to remove the listings, we will. I'm not saying this will happen (haven't had any indications yet) but just thought I would put this out there so people have a plan B.

I tried to tell people it was possible, but no one wanted to believe me. eBay can decide what constitutes a valid or invalid auction item. If Sony were to approach them and make this request, the would most likely honor it.

If they're fakes but being sold as real, eBay shouldn't be hosting them. I'm sure if someone contacted them they'd remove the articles as per their terms and conditions. Though you'd think they'd have a filter on Pravda or what-have-you to prevent them being listed in the first place...
