Weird, the gamestop I pre-ordered at did not mention any choice of options as to 60GB or 20GB, and that is what other forums reported as well, so I thought it was normal.
Well for us, the lady at the register asked everyone if they wanted the 20gb unit or the 60gb unit before they purchased. I noticed some people saying what you said, "Already spending 500, mind as well get the 60gb unit." The SKU numbers on the reciept were actually different for each configuration each person got, so there definately was some sort of notice of how many of each they are going to receive. Atleast thats what I think.
Funny thing was, sounded like there was a couple ebay'ers in the bunch, talking to a couple people and it really seemed they had no idea about the console except that it was a playstation 3 and what the price was. Some people were commenting on that they didnt know what games were coming out. One person I talked to didnt even know there was a wireless controller before he looked at the PS3 ad on the wall. One guy brought his parents to get a 2nd one, another guy brought his girlfriend.
It will be interesting to see if my number 8 in line gets cut down to a lower spot, the lady mentioned before she started taking any orders at all that if you were here with a family members buying a second ps3 for you that they would somehow find out, and would issue calls out in a couple weeks if there happens to be more than one order per household. Kinda weird I thought, but no biggie to me personally.
Another thing I noticed is when talking to a few people waiting next to me, that some people didnt even know nintendo had a new system coming out. I told them about it and the price and they were like 'I'll have to see about that', pointed to the Wii Ad on the wall when they let us inside and I heard some quite funny comments. "Is that a remote? the hell is that?" ...etc.
Overall it was a pretty interesting experience (got to talk with people from all walks of life on gaming and other stuff), and very organized on ebgames/gamestop's part. Though of course there were people who came late and got rejected, bummer for them. Glad I wont have to go through this again next month.
The lastest suggestions are Wii is launching with more consoles than PS2 has sold in it's entire life, in order to win multiple world-records in one go. That's why they made it out of such simple tech
Seriously, there's going to be something like 2 million in NA at launch, last I heard.
PS2 sold more than 2 million @ launch.
like 100 million+ (atleast shipped numbers anyway).
