Sucker Punch rebuilds Empire City!

Empire City look awesome. Now it's your turn Guerrilla! Pyrrhus and Helghasts would be awesome!

I remember "Need to Know" gave me his PS3 beta code. Like you, he may have received a PSP code too.

Good trick to add SacBoy to ModNation. Anything SacBoy is an automatic buy for my family once the little boy sees it.

This is a game of unpredictability and sudden reversals of fortune, not an accurate racing sim. Nonetheless, there are so many opportunities to take a battering in ModNation, from the weapons, the traps, the drops or the incredibly aggressive AI, that before long the single player becomes frustrating in the extreme, removing nearly all semblance of skill and judgement from the driving and replacing it with chance. Far too often I was picked off on the last corner of a race, dropping from first to sixth or seventh because of a weapon fired almost directly behind me, giving absolutely no warning.

It's a familiar feeling to any Mario Kart veteran: that inescapable certainty that the AI is cheating,

... but I liked Mario Kart's gameplay ! :p

Yeah, Eurogamer's review was a bit disconcerting in that regard. It wouldn't be a problem except like all these games, you don't get access to all the creation stuff unless you find it in the solo game. If the solo game is agonising, it's an unwanted evil.

Hmm... are they going to phase the creator tools ? Should make them all available to us. Not everyone has the desire to create new levels. e.g., The Eurogamer reviewer probably doesn't care since he admitted that he's not the creative type.

From Eurogamer :
ModNation are incredibly accomplished, in-depth and intuitive to use, with handy tutorials for advanced techniques. Stickers, accessories and parts are unlocked by completing races or sub-objectives, or by gambling collectible tokens on an in-game slot machine

So has the framerate improved from the demo?
The demo was virtually unplayable because of it. If it's improved, I might buy this as a gift for a friend family and their 7 year old kid.

According to what I read, the framerate has improved (i.e., smooth). I don't see the reviews complain about framerate. The game has long load time though.

The Beta left a sour taste. However recent vids have shown something pretty stable. I'll need to see a demo before buying, but the possibilities of split-screen and designing our own tracks removing powerups if they're cheap etc. is quite a compelling argument.

Yes i think the customisation could be a big save here. The items spoiled Mario Kart on Wii for me, being punished for being in first place is just wrong any Blue Shell type items should be banned altogether.

Undoubtedly, this will be my son's first "Create" title. He mucked around with LBP Creator mode, created some landscape but the mechanics are too deep to grasp for now.

JoyStiq's review:

For better and for worse, ModNation Racers is cut from a far more hardcore cloth than the typically "family friendly" fare in the genre. ModNation demands skill, and no amount of luck will be able to compensate for sheer ability. The weapons are more balanced than in other games: almost no single weapon is as devastating as Mario Kart's blue shell and lightning bolt. The ability to enhance weapons by saving them adds an appreciable level of depth: do you use your weapon immediately, or save up for a better one? And the shield introduces yet another strategic element to the gameplay. These small additions to the gameplay add up to make a far more challenging (and satisfying) racer.

Another hardcore game in sheep's skin ? :devilish:

Sony teases free DLC via promo codes:
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/05/06/modnation-racers-its-a-dlc-air-raid/

In anticipation for our ModNation Racers release on May 25th, and to celebrate ModNation May, we are going to drop some free ModNation DLC before we even launch the game!

[blah ...]

Air Raid is a sweet Mod that drives an even sweeter Fighter Plane Kart. If you’re lucky enough to get a voucher for this character, you don’t just get to play as Air Raid, but you can get all the accessories that come with him to create your own “Ace” driver and slick Air Fighter-styled kart.

That's the veritable opposite of Eurogamer's review! How can this be? One of these reviewers can't be very good at their job. So is MNR's all about lucky pickups and unlucky hits, or is it 'may the most skillful win'?

Yes, i was thinking exactly the same thing, the eurogamer review seemed to suggest that the game suffered from the same issue as Mario Kart with items taking away from much of the driving skill in the game.

How do the other reviews compare, is the eurogamer review the odd one out?
