[PS3] LittleBigPlanet Impressions

Great update's. Right on time to continue working on my level during my 2 weeks vacation. Hopefully this also fixes the explosive unglue bug, which my level has been suffering from.

I've (vaguely) traced the explosive unglue to being an effect that happens after undo's. That is, I would unglue a component, perfomr some edits and undos, and then BAM! the whole thing fell apart. However, quitting out of the editor then going back in allowed me to make the same changes without the level collapsing. I keep a wary ear out for the sound of disappearing (crushed) geometry and after some editing, will fly around looking for problems, as very occassionally I have had changes happen way, way off screen, but I've managed to work around it okay.

The new search seems very good. I've actually found some good content! There are some well put-together levels with original ideas and clever construction present on the first page of Highest Rated levels.

And incidentally, I'm nearing the end of my level and will be looking for volunteers to test it!

I was talking about a slightly different bug. Whenever an explosion happens on a destructable material, it can cause things glued to it to fall off, and also cause other things throughout the level to fall apart. Although these could be happening for the same reason, because in both cases changes are made to the geometry, causing things to unglue. I'll also heard the breaking sound whenever it happens. Luckily my level doesn't have a lot of destructable materials, so it doesn't happen often. I'll do a little test by dropping an explosive on some destructable materials to see wether or not this bug has been fixed.

Edit. I did the test, and things are no longer unglueing after an explosion. An explosion on a single plane does effect all 3 planes now, so it will destroy materials on all 3 planes. Seems like a strange limitation to me.

Anyone pick up the MGS stuff? Played through it, and I thought it was great. I thought the levels were even better than the ones in the main game.

Pretty sweet DLC, the new content is going to change the way people do level design, the paintinator and it's sensor are very well done. I only did the first VR mission (do it a second time for the real level and it's items).

There's a couple like that, but only if you use the stickers.

I would have if SCEE thought that EU people deserved an early update for x-mas

It is available in the EU store, it's just hidden away. You need to look for LBP DLC separately to find it.

Edit: It's now also on the christmas update page.

For those looking to get the Speedy Rexecutioner trophy, you have to finish the level before it is awareded. I must have beat it about 5 times in faster than 2:30, and then finally decided to finish it...bleh!

Love this DLC though, very very awesome.

New interview over at IGN. I found this comment particularly interesting:

IGN: Were you anticipating some of the copyright issues that blighted the game early on?

Alex Evans: There were three issues; one was negative and two were positive. The negative one was how hard it was to get worldwide legal harmony, because different countries have different laws around copyright infringement. We knew that people would be creative, and that there would be references. It was hard getting the right balance on a worldwide angle. But then there's been these two mad positives; one was the high quality of the levels, including the infringing ones. The other point is the number of IP owners who came up to us and said please whitelist us – we'll never ever ask you to pull infringing stuff. I can't say who that is, but those two things really shocked me, I think it shocked [the IP holders], who were like, hang on, my IP's being represented and it's being represented really well. The IP holders have to have last say over the representation of their brand, and that's fair enough, so we've always got to have a method for people misusing a brand, but what's been really lovely is how well represented so many brands are.

I downloaded the DLC today and it's quite enjoyable, although a bit short. In 2 hours I already cleared all levels with ace and 100% objects got. I'm not a particularly skilled player since I still have some levels not aced in the original contents...

Anyway, the ideas presented in this DLC is very good. I'm looking forward to some user designed levels with these new gadgets and maybe even more DLC :)

By the way, I'm also happy to see the DLC is translated into traditional Chinese. It's great that Sony cares about our little market :)

Did you do all the trophies? Getting the 3,750 in Survival Training is KILLING me. So hard.

The MGS DLC looks good value, although I haven't bought it yet. It may be short in itself, but the added features will aid creations.

Does anyone know how this content gets to be shared though? Would I need to buy the MGS pack to play other people MGS-content creations? Or can all content be shared with all people, and it's only necessary to buy if your intending to create with the content?

The latter, they aren't looking to split userbases thankfully.

Better yet, if one of your friend has bought the MGS level pack, he can invite you to his pod so you can play the MGS levels together, without you having to buy it.

The MGS level pack is very good value. The paintball gun works well, and can be used for more things then just shooting enemies. And for create mode you'll get extra materials, stickers, sounds, lights, ect. This is a great way to expand LBP, I hope they give other popular franchises the same treatment, while introducing new tools for level creation.

This is the only trophy (except the creation trophy) in the DLC I still don't get. Other trophies like shooting 40 paint balls in 5 seconds, killing rex in 2:30, or using less than 125 paint balls in act 3 are much easier than this one. I can only get about 2,300 in survival training.

Check out the News section in LBP and play the first level listed under " This weeks picks " or something like that ...

You can use Paintinator and it has the best vehicle [ a tank ] I've ever seen in LBP ...

Over the last few days, everyone seems to be playing LBP, whether creation mode, online levels or the MGS pack ... I think this game will end up in a lot of PS3s eventually.
