Torchlight 2, My Impressions...

Truth is they got really ambitious, but I think they've pulled it off. It's going to feel old-school - a really fun game that has been polished to perfection. I think it will be a level of quality we rarely see nowadays.

Well, I just hope they won't repeat the confused muddled mess with affixes on gear - there were just way too many in the original torchlight, and it was always unclear which affix offered the greatest power over another since nothing was explained in-game. You were left to either guess randomly yourself, or perhaps try to find information on the internet, which isn't a very good solution. You'd want people playing a game to be able to understand the game by playing it...

This was the least polished aspect IMO in the original game; that and the wonky skill trees that had lots of unattractive, unappealing choices that were just dead ends with little or no long-term viability, just like Diablo 2 did.

maybe you just didn't know how to play diablo 2? every class had several viable builds. Off the top of my head i cant think of one completely useless or deadend skill and the skill bonuses that where added removed all doubt.

actually i can think of one, Telekinesis for the sorc.

I'm assuming you came into Diablo 2 in the 1.10 days. Before then, there were definitely skills that were useless in the long run.

If you go to the website and read one of the not-a-blogs, Travis gives a lot of information on how he's revamped the skill systems.

 I didn't say I didn't know how to play D2, or that classes did not have several viable builds.

, just to show how dumb it is to randomly  for no discernible reason.

Before they added synergies, most of the skills in all of the trees were either complete junk or underpowered. If you put more than 1 point into either of the skellys as a necro you wasted points, for example. They simply died instantly (or got lost somewhere) once you got far enough into the game, and did virtually zero damage. Other classes had lots of similarly very bad choices.

Even after the synergies there are many redundancies, like in the amazon arrow and spear tree.

Too close to Borderlands 2 to be a day-1 purchase for me, but I will buy torchlight 2 and play it a lot eventually.

I tried Borderlands 1 but I disliked it to the point that I don't find the motivation to play the second one.

In regards to Torchlight 2 I pre-ordered it months ago and I can't wait to play it. I played Torchlight 1 on the Xbox 360 and these days I have to admit I very, very rarely play on the PC anymore. But I could kick that back into a routine if Torchlight 2 is an amazing game.

Still, I consider myself a console gamer at heart.

Never tried the beta but it looks awful cartoonish ala on the borderline of World of Warcraft.

Even though Diablo 3 wasn't what I expected it to be it sure looked really awesome and dripping with atmosphere.

Creating cartoonish graphics is a lot less resource intensive than realistic graphics. Ritual (Runic? Shit, something with an "R" in the beginning!) isn't a big outfit, so just look at the gameplay instead of the graphics themselves I would suggest, if cartoony isn't your thing...

The first one was exactly like this ( btw the game used no shaders at all the textures were simple hand drawn diffuse), why would they go against the art direction of the first game? It was imo what also gave it originality.

Oh, and by the way; pre-load is up and running right now in case you peeps haven't noticed yet! :)

No compelling pre-order bonus (original Torchlight but I've already played the hell out of that) so I'll just wait until it has a good Christmas or Summer sale on it. Too many games taking up my time or soon to take up my time. GW2, Borderlands 2, and the new X-Com.

Regards,
SB
