That's the title screen for the E3 demo. What's most impressive is the way it just pulls the camera back as you take control and start running up the street in the background.

I think this games needs self-shadowing ! That is what seems missing everywhere though it has a lot lot of dynamic lights.

Although, at one point in the direct feed video Kratos did show self-shadowing(I think ), it lacks everywhere else!

Iam not an expert at this but isn't there self shadowing everywhere look when he is in the cave his blades are even casting a shadow on himself. Please correct me if Iam wrong.

Probably due to different attributes of the lights. The main global light would cast self shadows on Kratos himself while the other dynamic lights dont? Or selective self-shadowing? Though I fully expect them to implement SS on all characters including the enemies in the final product.

Yea, when the blades are on his back, they cast shadows on him, but I never see the main light, that is casting character shadows on the ground, cast self-shadows on the characters. Look at the minotaur and Kratos. They both have shadows on the ground, but the same light casts no SS on the either the Minotaur or Kratos. I mention the Minotaur coz he is big and it is easier to spot the lack of shadows on him.

OTOH, I love the "Ride the minotaur" gameplay :) !

Aye, I hear ye. They can find a middle ground somewhere. The hostile environment could be more imaginative/demonic (e.g., Acid rain, since they already render rain drops and fog). It also helps to remind people why the buildings in Helghan have no (bright) color.

Isn't the minotaur under a huge shadow for most of the fight? It looks like I see self shadowing from the light source from Kratos impacts.

This image clearly shows self shadowing doesn't it?

Too me it looks like it has very good self shadowing without all the flickering. I apoligize if Iam missing the point.

I like the Digital Foundry analysis pointing out that presence or lack of self-shadowing currently seems to predict whether or not the scenery is going to be smashed up in some way or another.

Lack of self shadowing honestly doesn't bother me. With the exception of a select few titles like Uncharted for example, shadows (self or otherwise) in console games often tend to look more like graphics glitches than features. (the pixelated mess in MGS4, the flickering blotches in Tomb Raider Underworld, the dithered weirdness in pretty much every UE3 game or even RE5 outside of the cut scenes)
I'd rather have a smoother framerate and a cleaner IQ instead, especially in a game with a darker tone. (a lack of shadows tends to look weird in overly bright settings like in Assassin's Creed or Infamous, but the grittier looking games can absolutely get away with it imo, especially if they aren't going for complete realism)

Isn't Kratos casting a shadow on his right leg in this pic?

This will be my last post on this issue just wanted some clarification. Thanks for everyones input.

Pictures from the new OPSM seems to indicate the inclusion of selfshadowing, at least on Kratos himself. I wish they'll release some latest screenshots soon.

It's like those cartoons where you know which doors will actually open due to nuances in colouring.
