When's the game due ? If the tech is already in the game at this stage, it should get better with time.

I'd be more interested in the moving level concept and see it in action (like the Uncharted 2 video).

This is a game with a lot of content. That they can show a pretty decent and polished first level doesn't in the least mean that the game looks like that across all levels. In the meantime, the tech guys will probably have a chance to keep improving the engine as much as they can, though at the same time as the work is getting closer to completion the art may not be able to benefit as much from improvements.

I'd just focus on the important gameplay mechanics and keep the activities dramatic and interesting. Self-shadowing should be taken in context w.r.t. the entire visual experience. It's not that cool if the shadow flickers, or the light/shadow doesn't do a thing to the game play. Some other techniques may be more impactful.

Me think they should keep something as a nice surprise for long time fans. I'm not one (haven't played a single GoW game), but I have a feeling they'd be all over it. No leak would be ideal. Heh...

WHAT ?!?!? You have been living under a rock or what ?

Ive never played any either...well a couple of minutes of the psp version. Did not have a ps2 at the time only xbox.

Those games are still worth checking out. The PSP version is pretty good, especially for a handheld game, but the PS2 games are quite a bit better, bigger in scale and definately a good warm up to finish before GoW 3 arrives. They don't look that bad either.

Actually I just finished playing GOWII the other day, my first GOW experience. Guess what, I totally enjoyed it as much as my other PS3 games even though it can look pretty pixelated on my 46". But still, the whole game is epic and at times it made me doubt how the emotion chip in my 60G launch model is pulling it off. I say definitely give it a go for anyone who hasn't yet.

I'll check 'em out just before GoW III is released.

Play the first one first and then the second. If you have finshed the first one then the opening stage of the second feels just awesome as you retain all powers from the first one for quite some time in the second one's first level. Feels like it is a homage to the fans.

I think they are just holding it back so they don't crowd the holiday season. Sort of like they held back KZ2.

It's possible, but unlikely. Sony has always released God of War in March on both PS2 and PSP because it will spread the games sales over 2 fiscal years for them (since theirs ends in march). Basically, Sony get's all the front loaded sales in March for their 2009 Fiscal Year, and then they'll get the "legs" of the game into the 2010 Fiscal year.

I agree that gameplay is the most important thing, but the art team doesn't do game mechanics, it's not like gameplay mechanics would have to be sacrificed for self-shadowing, self-shadowing should be a standard in every big budget console game, right now it looks like Kratos has selfshadowing but not the enemy character models, for cohesive visuals, everything should be appropriately shadowed and self-shadowed. Santa Monica makes good games but I think their gameplay and visuals powess is a tad overrated.

Bah, Kittonwy, self shadow didn't push KZ2 into a mega-mega hit. It's an eye-candy for sure and I love it. But there may be more important features to keep GoW momentum going.

Selfshadowing is somewhat important imo, for the total immersion that a player can get from graphics. If the lighting is believeable, the scene is believeable.

NBA 05 on PS2 featured selfshadowing on all players. Doing it on a PS3 or X360 shouldn't be a problem.

Really? REALLY!?

NBA 05 with 10 people on stage, a bunch of Low poly side line players, and 2D crowd?

VS God of War with tons of enemies, complex level geometry, etc? Come on man, I think it's ridiculous to say "oh this PS2 game had it, all next gen games should have it! It's not apples to apples.

Kittonwy - If selfshadowing has an impact on things like v-sync, or framerate, then it has effectively begun to effect the gameplay. Santa Monica knows what they are doing (you know, as opposed to making a game that gives core gamers a hardon, but ultimately fails to enjoy success).

The hard core people are the ones who give a crap about 60 fps with vsync, casual games don't care if it's 30fps as long as framerate is stable enough. Self-shadowing was a last-gen feature, it's ridiculous that a team that is purported to be talented like Santa Monica can't get self-shadowing on enemy characters to work.
