PS3 firmwares 2.0 and 2.10

How about using more memory while in the XMB and less when playing games? Why isnt that possible and if it is why have they done it?

I'm sure they are already doing that :).
The discussion is more about ingame features and resident memory.

To my knowledge it is 32MB XDR and 0 MB GDDR3.
it seems that the Memory footprint has now reached the same level as 360?

BTW, 2.01 is out now.
where did you get that info? if so, thats great. i may be in the minority here, but i'd rather give developers all the memory they need rather than have features added to the PS3. i'm satisfied with what the PS3 can do right now, or if i do want something, it shouldn't take anymore memory than it already does (like just increase the compatibility with video types).

however, i find it hard to believe it dropped so dramatically.

going to google and searching for "PS3 2.0 memory usage" has quite a few websites that are rumering about this. However, I'm also waiting for a more official announcement or information from a developer....

Is it too much to ask for QA? This is starting to get frustrating. If we're going to have weekly firmware releases, at least develop a patching mechanism so it doesn't need to do the whole install process and download each image every time.

2.0 was clearly rushed out, so now 2.01 was also clearly rushed out with CoD4 players encountering a "DW update file error 102 - 'BD_EXCEPTION_IN_DB" error.

Uh-Oh... I need to try this to see if it affects me. From what I hear, the image is already patch-based since 1.93 instead of install-everything-from-scratch (because there is some sort of database to track the install). This is perhaps where they fall down.

Definitely agree that they should do better QA if the CoD4 error is true.

Can't believe they have a bug on this update.
What the hell are they doing? They don't run tests on this updates? Hey, wake up dudes!! Are you guys taking lessons with Microsoft or what?!
Fortunately I don't installs this updates immediately. I wait a few days just to make sure there are no problems. It seems I'm not updating to 2.01 soon...

It's so sad to see, but patches and updates introducing errors is endemic to computers, in OSes, drivers and applications/games, and now increasingly consoles. Console games used to have bugs, but they tended to be small and the titles QA'd to very high quality on release because once out there, there was nothing you could do about it. Now with patchable, updatable software, things look set to get sloppy, and scarily the market looks like it'll happily roll over and take it, as demonstrated by GT's review of ME saying problems can be fixed in an update. Patches should be looked upon as a band-aid fault rather than a positive action. Firmware updates are more excusable when they add features, but certainly breaking things that once worked is going to seriously annoy end users. We shouldn't have to endure PC-like issues in our consoles!

The base OS seems to be evolving quickly. Once they get to where they want, we should see lesser patches.

Infinity Ward (and Sony) hasn't released any official news about the fault yet, although it is widely reported and assumed (reasonably) by users that 2.01 is the culprit. Might be a server side change too (due to their PSN update these few days ?).

If they have a patching mechanism already, then it is brutal. Patching the PS3 takes 10 minutes each time with about half a dozen button presses (so it can't be completely hands off). 360 updates, you click yes and within a minute you're back in your game...don't even need to resync your controllers.

PS3 has a long way to go in this area.

That's based on rumors though. Either way, patch-based or flash-based, if the PS3 OS is undergoing some serious under-the-hood changes, then it may be time consuming to update. As long as it keeps improving, I actually don't mind the update. The most memorable being v1.80 that addressed all the major AV concerns in 1 fell swoop (except for DTS-MA and BD v1.1).

But they should keep the ship tight by more meticulous testing (No easy way out of that).

As for the update UI, it has improved slightly... but I agree they should introduce automated update if it's going to be frequent. It can be blood boiling sometimes to press >, then X, then start, then whatever just to get no visible changes after 10 minutes.

A lot of these updates are mandatory anyways.
