PS3 firmwares 2.0 and 2.10

If they have a patching mechanism already, then it is brutal. Patching the PS3 takes 10 minutes each time with about half a dozen button presses (so it can't be completely hands off). 360 updates, you click yes and within a minute you're back in your game...don't even need to resync your controllers.

PS3 has a long way to go in this area.

Fyi, the resync is gone, no need to connect the cable again.

I would like a one click update on the PS3, it´s the same with WoW, 3! EULA i have to accept with so much text it would cost me 100k in lawyers to understand how many of my kids i just gave away.

The base OS seems to be evolving quickly. Once they get to where they want, we should see lesser patches.

Infinity Ward (and Sony) hasn't released any official news about the fault yet, although it is widely reported and assumed (reasonably) by users that 2.01 is the culprit. Might be a server side change too (due to their PSN update these few days ?).

Didn´t i read there was an update for COD 4 that fixed this?

Maybe the COD4 players know more.

Consoles are starting to look just like PCs. And I hate PCs.
I miss my good old PS2....
It seems that every game and firmware released has a severe bug that needs a fix.
It's obvious they are not testing things properly. Maybe to spare some money.
"We don't need to test this game too deep. If users find a bug, then we release a fix. We will spend less money this way.".

Yep. To verify the day before yesterday I had an hour long Warhawk session which was as smooth as it has ever been, if anything it seemed smoother but then it's finally starting to get easier to get into one of the dedicated servers, so that could have something to do with it.

It's so sad to see, but patches and updates introducing errors is endemic to computers, in OSes, drivers and applications/games, and now increasingly consoles. Console games used to have bugs, but they tended to be small and the titles QA'd to very high quality on release because once out there, there was nothing you could do about it. Now with patchable, updatable software, things look set to get sloppy, and scarily the market looks like it'll happily roll over and take it, as demonstrated by GT's review of ME saying problems can be fixed in an update. Patches should be looked upon as a band-aid fault rather than a positive action. Firmware updates are more excusable when they add features, but certainly breaking things that once worked is going to seriously annoy end users. We shouldn't have to endure PC-like issues in our consoles!

Yeah but without updates, you don't get new features.

So that's the tradeoff.

If you never go play online, you probably can get by without doing any of the System Updates.

True, if you want to download stuff, you have to keep updating the firmware.

A lot of people never do go online with consoles. Or at least, they're not used to thinking of consoles as a connected device. That is changing over time but it wouldn't surprise me if most of the PS2 user base had no or little experience with going online with consoles.

Well, I remember a great deal of awesome improvements to the system over the year, and although of course it would be nice if there were no tradeoffs at all for it, I can deal with a bug or two. But when a bug does come up which is really a problem, I also appreciate if they come up with a fix quickly. Sure it's annoying to have to update again (at least, for some - I always know beforehand that an update is coming because I read about it online, so it's easier to say take care of that during dinner and then have the PS3 available afterwards when I need it).

Thanks to the firmware updates though we got things like DVD upscaling, RGB Full Color, and support for BlueTooth mice and keyboards, all three which I'm using a lot, my latest addition being the Logitech DiNovo Edge, which just works right away and works great! What an awesome keyboard. It's pricey, but darn if its worth it. If you're looking for a rechargeable keyboard with built in mouse and bluetooth support and matches the PS3's looks, this is it!

I was not aware of this feature ! Looks like I'll have to look into getting a bluetooth keyboard and mouse as well.

Well, 2.01 turns out to be fine contrary to user reports. So I'd say 2.0x is good. Information Board should be removed or revamped. The longest streak of bug fix releases is still 1.9x. 1.80 was the best release.

The enhancements I use/enjoy daily are:
  • RGB Full Option from 1.8 (couldn't go back to RGB Limited anymore)
  • XMB Theme from 2.0 (It's more soothing and close to the heart)

  • On-going DLNA fixes and enhancements (but started in 1.8). I now have > 1 Tb of storage space accessible from PS3. Everything from home videos, photos to songs are there. I am looking forward to PS Home to export/share some of these to friends and family abroad.

RemotePlay is nice too when my PS3 is hosted at home (especially DLNA + RemotePlay). My work network is blocked :(

Same question here.

I had random sources saying it's 32 XDRAM and 0 VRAM, but they seem to be simple rumors. Any developers here can confirm it?

to patsu: I can't stand RGB limited either. The option on PS3 forced me to do the same corrections to all of my video playback software. I have to turn it on or I couldn't stand it .
I could almost instantaneously locate it now (once I see a section of the image turn totally black).
Also, on 16:10 monitors, any video played in full screen (as almost no video's aspect ratio is 16:10 unless you make it that way) will definatly have black bars on the top (playing 16:9) or sides (playing 4:3). These areas represent complete black (0 on RGB full) and is easy to use to

Damn you PS3, letting me know more and forcing me to do more

Only if you don't go online at all.

You all are forgetting the fact that games, SP games, require certain firmware versions too, and those updates are included on the disc (with a mandatory install). Ratchet and Clank, IIRC, requires 1.93. I'd venture to say it would be nearly impossible to keep up with new games, and not have to update your firmware at some point (even if you never go online).
