PS3 firmwares 2.0 and 2.10

The only thing is that since 2.0 i'm also getting some freezes. The PS3 just hangs and is unresponsive. The only thing that I can do is flip the switch at the back of the unit.

It happened once while using the browser (which is indeed allot faster)

Yes, I experienced a freeze once too, on a browser with heavy flash (I think 9.0) support ... But that website (dutch tv guide) never worked well with the browser so far. Still, a complete lock up is a bit sloppy.

Hmmm... That's odd. I haven't had any freezes yet.

Besides playing RFOM, Uncharted and CoD4... I also personalized my XMB theme, and played with a 1 Tb NAS (with DLNA). Only went into web browser once but have visited PSN a couple of times to download demoes/trailers and test the new (video) file streaming.

Perhaps the freeze only happens in the new web browser code ?

Yes, I think it's only in the webbrowser ... that seems to have had some internal workovers for the children filter thing.

I ve noticed that temporal freezes (sometimes you might get the impression that it freezed permanently and needs a restart) occure when the information board display is switched on.

When I switched it off the thing works just as well as before the new firmware if not better.

Advice: Switch the information bar off. It is updating its information continuously often through online and it makes things freeze while it does

Yes... that non-feature should be removed to save space and elegance :(

The rest of XMB is starting to impress; still a lot more room for surprises though ;-)

They had the right idea with a news item, but that implementation is shocking! Dunno how that got past the design team!

It's likely a last minute addition.

They should just use the alert/message notification for news announcements and the inbox for news reading. Then improve on the notification mechanism so that they won't block games.

Besides playlist management, I hope the next update include group/clan management for friends (and also up the limit from 50 to 100 or 200).

A LBP theme would be oh-so awesome!

Edit : Also this gives us an insight into the XMB interface - it's bitmap based, and not vector based.

The best feature by a long shot coming with 2.0 for me is the custom themes support!

Check out the crazy good GAF and MGS4 themes made by "m0dus" over there.

We should create an Official B3D PS3 Theme thread too. I bet some of us here are great at making these too:)

They should allow us to run an app in the background by default. I would run the video app with my favorite trailer/movie. This will put the wallpaper feature to shame.

I agree! That would be great, even if only animated backgrounds.

Tversity has released an updated version that is compatible with firmware 2.0:
http://tversity.com/download/
Supposed to be able to fast forward, rewind even for on-the-fly transcoded files.

Also, SACD can now be playbacked over optical audio link. Direct Stream Digital also gets converted to DTS (If you're a SACD fan I supposed).

EDIT:
According to AVS,
* Mpeg files can be upscaled to 1080i/p
* New picture display mode(s)

I have not tested these myself.

I heard Major Nelson on the Insomniac podcast saying that the average user on Live had about 24 contacts, which was a reason they would not up the number.
If the same is true for PSN then Sony might look at it the same way.
