PS3 Firmware 1.80 - PS/PS2/DVD upscaling, DLNA and more!

I'm experimenting with DLNA servers.

Nero Mediaserver wouldn't work streaming in realtime on my system (Athlon 64 3200+), so I tried TVersity. I installed that, but the PS3 can't detect it no matter what I do.

Nero Mediaserver is now proving to be buggy...it crashes constantly, at least on Vista (32-bit). Now when I try to start it up, it tells me that a component is missing and I've got to reinstall. Bizarre.

TVersity works quite well for me (XP MCE'05), also allows for setting the maximum target resolution for transcoded streams, which is quite a nice feature when bandwidth is limited (in WLANs). However, sometimes the PS3 cannot detect the files anymore and i have to restart the streaming server on my PC (Core Duo 2300).

Haven't tried Nero much, it's ok though for streaming low bitrate mpgs, but fails to transcode anything for me (possibly because of missing MPEG4 encoder...).

Here's my findings so far:

WMP 11
======
* Turn on Media Sharing via "Tools > Options > Library > Configure Sharing..."
+ Check "Share my media to:"
+ Click on "Settings...", check all media types, "All ratings" for Star ratings and Parental ratings. Also check "Allow new devies and computers automatically". Close the dialog.
+ Choose "Unknown device" (which is your PS3) from the Media Sharing panel and click "Allow". Close the dialog.
* Create firewall rules to all traffic between PS3 and Windows.
* Go to home router and turn on uPnP. After a few moments, you should see a new entry for port 3568.

I tried restarting PS3 and Windows separately, they were able to find each other. If you restart Windows, you may need to launch Windows Media Player client until PS3 detects the Media Server. Once detected, DLNA is in place even if the WMP client quits. I have not waited long enough for PS3 to detect WMP automatically.

If you do not turn on uPnP on the router, you'll need to open the ports explicitly.

I added MP4 file type to WMP according to:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...&#post10629813
but have not found a MP4 video for testing yet. Will keep you guys posted.

Just installed and patched v0.9.10.2 (separate download here: http://tversity.blogspot.com/2007/05/patch-for-firmware-18-of-sony-ps3-is.html). Seem to have the same problem as Asher. Then magically it worked. I'm still configuring it but thought I should let people know that:

Tversity will take some time (10-15 minutes for me) to prep the computer. During this period, you will not be able to start the service or use the client app.

:) Yes, for best practices, you should open only the necessary ports on the personal firewall (between the Windows host and PS3). The home router should have another firewall and is left untouched for DLNA (except for uPnP).

I'm using Nero but don't like it. The video isn't anywhere near as good as TVersity's and I can't pause.

TVersity, however, has badly corrupted audio...maybe I need to turn the max resolution down?

New version of TVersity is out, version 0.9.10.3, not just a patch. Promises better support for PS3 1.8 (and 360 for that matter), including internet radio, improved transcoding and more.

# Support the Sony PS3 firmware 1.8
From firmware 1.8 there is no need to use the Adobe Flash interface for the PS3 (it is still the only way to stream media to the Nintendo Wii). You can now access your entire audio, photo and video collection from the PS3 dashboard, including Internet Radio/TV, RSS feeds and more. The changes from the previously released patch are:

* Internet radio now works on the PS3. First playback attempt is likely to fail with an “Access to the media server has been deniedâ€￾ message (or “unsupported dataâ€￾ message), this is because the PS3 does not wait long enough for the data to be fetched over the Internet. After this failure, wait a few seconds and try playing this same station again. Assuming a connection to that station was possible, there won’t be an error message, however the actual playback may take up to two minutes and more to start since the PS3 requires about 1 MB of data before it initiates playback.
* Internet video and transcoded content starts playing faster than it used to (saving about 5 seconds).
* Library refresh is now reflected on the PS3 and on any other device that checks the media server for updates (leaving a folder that has updates and then going back to it is required in order to see the changes).
* When moving from one Internet video to another, previously the older video was not always terminated, this is now fixed.
* Issues with green bars or distorted colors when playing via PS3 were resolved.
* The TVersity icon is now shown by the Ps3.

I hope in a future update there will be a setting to force 24hz output for Blu-ray.
Some TVs/receivers have problems to get it working with the Auto setting. And my TV is one of them.
It`s more the fault of the TVs by not sending correct EDID information, but it would be nice from Sony to include the setting. I trust Sony more than I trust Samsung to release an update for the issue.
And flashing the PS3 is easier as well.
I don`t have a PS3 yet, but it would be nice to have this in the future.

Nice. Downloaded, installed, and tomorrow I'll be able to wow my colleagues. :)

0.9.10.3b available here: http://tversity.blogspot.com/2007/05/version-09103-is-here.html

Since the .3 version, I can view MP4 movies over DLNA and remotely over PSP now. :D I can zoom into the movies (Original, Normal, Widescreen), and also control the playback (1.5x, 10x forward and backward).

Still trying to figure out AAC and DivX/Xvid transcoding. The tricky bit is I have too many stuff installed on my PC. Am trying to remove every codecs and filters, then reinstall ffdshow. Some GAF folks got theirs to work :(

With TVersity, streaming MP4 files...does it have to download the whole thing to the PS3 before it loads?

Wow, just wow. Taking over the PS3 with the PSP at work just worked flawlessly, first try. And even with little upload bandwidth at home and the PS3 currently being wirelessly connected at home, I could even watch some of the movies fairly fluently. Color me (and my colleagues) impressed!

What speed of bandwith are you talking about? How much speed do we need for displaying perfect video stream?

Right now the PS3 is on a (wireless) connection with about 512kbit upstream. I don't know what you'd need for a perfect video stream. In a few days I may be able to test this with a better connection.

Masakazu Honda does some reporting on the new A/V functions.
http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/docs/20070528/avt007.htm

DVD scaling is mostly done by Cell, with some aid by GPU shaders. In the default settings noise reduction is off unlike an older firmware but the new upscaler takes care of it. It analyzes a picture and decomposes it into several parts with different characteristics then applies different processes to each part and synthesizes them into a final picture. The algorithm, co-developed by Sony and SCE, is based on what Sony has been researching in-house. Since simple comparison of tap count is meaningless due to the nature of it, tap count is not disclosed. Deinterlacing 1080i-sourced BD is in the todo list.

From 1.50 to 1.60 a bug in SACD playback was fixed and it got 1-bit more precise. In 1.80 bitmapping has been added for dithering into 24-bit after DSD to PCM conversion in 64-bit FP. The bitmapping software in 1.80 is Type 1. Next month a different type of a bitmapping filter that supports noise shaping is going to be sold at PLAYSTATION Store.

Thanks, interesting stuff.

An interesting new development ... additional software features sold to (the few) who want/need it?
