PS3 Controller Rumor (Updated)

i always thought that the analog sticks were too close together and it seems like the shoulders are a bit too far from your fingers... but that depends on the final size.

Funny, in that pic it does look very very small. But I swear that on the video that was shown from the same situation (I think it was the french games show Re7, that airs on TV5) the controller looked BIG!
Could be the pic is taken from funny angle, and the fact that you can't see much of the hand but mostly the glove... maybe it's an oversize glove with a small hand inside :D

There you go. Looks friggen fragile in someones hands. I'm short and it looks like I could crush it in a fit of rage.
When I first saw it I thought the image was photoshopped. It does look ridiculously small.

How many people spent time playing a game with the PS3 controller? Does it feel horrible in your hand when playing? Sheessh some people, criticizing the controller based entirely on the way it looks.

I know some Xbox fans that swear the PS2 controller is one of the worst controllers ever made, and yet many PS2 fans say the controller is one of things they love about the PS2.

Kinda "funny" that Microsoft (software dev) has (for now) a better controller than Sony.
The thing is, like others have pointed out, the 'batarang' may be as good or even better than the MS controller. Some have pointed out that the batarang design is based on the Alps gamepad which received rave reviews back in the day.

Looks is important too. People are susceptible to the placebo effect from any number of sources in our daily lives. Just look at the number of people who stick shiny hubcaps and fake twin exhaust pipes on their midrange cars to make them look as if they'd go faster.

PS3 has a superb design (IMO), but the batarang controller just looks pap. Especially in comparison, and it's still got the left analog stick in the wrong place just like the dual shock pad. And if it LOOKS bad, people are going to think it IS bad, which will color their impressions once they get to touch it - or may in fact make them disinterested in ever touching it at all as they think it'll feel bad.

No, the original xbox pad was one of the worst controllers ever made. ;) Not only was it as big as a medium-sized aircraft carrier, it had those awkwardly-placed black and white buttons as well.

The look of the batarang still sucks btw. :)

, and yet many PS2 fans say the controller is one of things they love about the PS2.

The design is one thing (Yeah, the batarang-style is not of the best taste, to say the least), but what do really matter are the potentiometers of the analogue sticks. If they stick (Pun intended) with the mechanical mess found in the Dual Shock 1 and 2, I can already say that I hate this pad.

If they used their brains (Not sure they did, though, just look at the design...), they'll have the same kind of magnetic potentiometers found in the DC/GC/Xbox gamepads.
Everybody complain about the lack of precision of the DS2 analogue sticks, I seriously hope SCEI took note of these complaints.

Note that, from the E3 pictures, it seems that there's not enough space under the stick, for it to use mechanical potentiometers.

I personally never liked the PS2 controller, and always perferred other controllers, but recently getting a PS2, and spending time with the controller, I love it. It works really well, and is confortable in my hands. Just shows you, people have to try things first, and their impressions may even change where they even think it now looks good.

Anyway, Sony has said they will change the design, as at the Tokyo Game Show, which I went to, there was a sign next to the PS3 controller that said "Conceptual Design". I personally think, they should just release a wireless version of the PS2 controller.

Well that's good, I like it how it is. ;)

Anyway Onetimeposter it's clear what the purpose of this thread is though, so of that I'm a little less keen on. Besides, an official 'denying' a rumor that the controller will change is not the same as the controller in fact not getting a change come Jan.

But like I said, I like the look, even if this is a flamewar thread waiting to happen.

The issue Vysez raises is the most important matter, IMO. Shape and even size are of tertiary/secondary importance.

(I didn't realize the technical reason for the difference in analog sticks before, either)

"a Sony exec. has denied rumors that a redesigned PS3 controller would be unveiled at this January’s CES in Las Vegas."

!=

"Sony says PS3 design to stay as it was"

Why start another thread when there's already one about this rumor of redisgned gamepad? If there's an update about it, post it in the relevant thread, no need for new one.

I merge the threads.

Sony could do something cool with the controller design. If the Janurary CES ends up having the PS3 showing off a new design I hope it's more than minor cosmetic changes. It's the perfect venue to generate a lot of hype for new design thats for sure. It would get way more hype than Nintendo recieved with the Revolution.

The problem with the Xbox black and white buttons was there placement and size. They should have shaped them like the Gamecubes x and y buttons (sort of kidney beaned shaped) and made the button surface less smooth. This is what I consider more ideal. I would've liked 6 face buttons (2 of them kidney beans) on the Xbox360 controller to go along with the 4 shoulder buttons/triggers. I hold some slim hope that Sony will add two kidney beans to accompany the diamond cluster, but I know it won't happen.

The location of the dual sticks on the Xbox controller are very comfortable, and using the digital pad in a first person shooter for special commands is an easy motion.

The GC had the best pad ever! Easily the best, most comfortable game pad I've ever used. Then comes the S version of the Xbox controller, then the N64s, then the PS2's controller.

The thing with Sony's controllers for me is that they would cause pain in my wrists after only a very short time. Funny enough, I've used many PC game pads based around the sign, but altered a bit that were very nice. But every PS2 gamepad I've used has caused me pain rather quickly.

You have to be kidding! That controller is terrrible...what a useless analogue stick. N64 was far superior.

I don't like the fins on the old sony controller and i really don't like the way they look on the new one .

Thats just me the fins allways suck , they dig into my palms
