PS3 transformable controller and video service rumors

well you can have modular parts and parts you can change the angle of using ball joints like posable figures do. this could be more like a public trial of an idea that they would hope to make standard for the next PS much like the original dual shock. hmm just had an idea that parts could rotate so you can bring the most commonly used controls for a particular game to the most comfortable position.

Transforming controller? What next, the Nintendo Matrix of Leadership?

those who get that joke are as geeky as I am. :(

Sounds like the 2-piece design of the mock-ups for the Wii-mote we've seen already. Check the 360 Wii-mote thread for the pic of all the different designs.

As stated in the article, the picture the used was a mock up from some time ago seperate to this and is nothing to do with the actual story, and quite obviously it will never look like that even if they did make a straight clone.

The idea if using this tripod thing, and doing away with the nunchuck part of the wimote sugests something different. The first thing that came to my mind was a device that could detect your position in 3d space, relative to this "tripod".
Using wii tennis as an example, with a device like this you could have a similar game but where you could actualy run from side to side of your room controlling the location of the onscreen player aswell as swinging to make a shot, rather than just the swinging part. It would be more of an evolution of the ideas bought by the wiimote rather than a clone.
Having a traditional controller already in the possesion of each PS3 owner allows for much more radical devices possible, as they would not have to be used with every type of game as the wiimote is.

Ofcouse this is all speculation on my part, but speculation is half the fun of gaming!

Isn't the new Guncon from Time Crisis 4, pretty much how wiimote would function for FPS ? Anyone have impression ?

Metroid Prime 3 should give people a pretty good idea of how the wiimote works in an FPS, no? From what I heard, really well.

I think Metroid Prime 3 controlls are good but they belong to MP3, playing Quake or Doom with these controls would make it into a totaly different game so it is not a sollution for FPSs across the board. It relys on locking on to work well and so was a natural evolution of the controls from previous metroid prime games. I dont see it being flexible enougth for games not specifically designed from the ground up to use it i.e. ports

The big issue is moving the screen in the correct way, i think a mix of dual analogue and the wii-mote could have worked well (1 analogue on nunchuk and 1 on wiimote itself), being able to move about and face the direction you want in the traditional way but then be able to pinpoint shots on any part of the screen using the pointer. It would take some getting used to tho.

Yes, that's what the new Guncon controller is I think. It has dual analog + pointer + sixaxis. I'm not sure if it has force feedback or not. Anyone have impression of the new Guncon ? I only heard the part where TC4 take advantage of the new Guncon feature is kinda tack on.

The new Guncon is too complicated. You use similar buttons (analog stick + trigger), plus motion controlled schemes to move around.

I got dizzy and confused after a brief moment of use. They should refine the control scheme some more (fewer buttons and more responsive). Sometimes, I find Wiimote hard to use too (e.g., when one needs to point to the screen for an extended period).

"Free form" trigger actions like bowling, golfing, tug-o-war may be more friendly. Incidentally, I heard good things about SIXAXIS bowling in "High Velocity Bowling" and of course tug-o-war in "Folklore". The problem with SIXAXIS is not because it is useless, it is because the idea is not fully developed (Shape is wrong, mostly used for trivial tasks). Like Wii, people need to experiment with it more.

Tablets might actually be practical for a PS3 input device. They are very usable from two year old onwards.

Too bad there is no in-game support (LittleBigPlanet ! :( )

Good. As people has already pointed out, the key is in software (and usage model). They should have built-in LEDs on both so that PS Eye can work with these half-controllers.
