PS3 backward compatibility quality issues

Did anyone catch this on another forum? (cross posted from GAF, sorry)

Some guy who posts at the PcVsConsole forum (I know I know), claims to be working on the project and made some posts recently regarding the issue. He seems like a pretty pissed off dude but gives out some interesting info regarding BC on the 360 and PS3.

The problem is with games that use native 512 pixel wide format screens, when that is upconverted to 640 the filter is not sufficiently good. It's like if you load a 512 pixel bitmap in MS Paint, and stretch it to 640 it looks like crap.

So Sony is adding a better filter for that and it'll be fixed very soon. It applies to less than 10% of games anyway.

The current PS3 emulates PS2 half in software and half in hardware, and part of my work right now is removing the hardware part completely.

The PS3 is 97.5% compatible, with the assistance of some hardware. It doesn't have a PS2 soldered on, it only has a limited part of it. If there was 100% of the PS2 soldered on there would be no problem.

The situation is that we wanted to give you 100% or near 100% at all costs, so we put the hardware in as a contingency plan to guarantee that. Although even with the partial hardware assistance I can tell you it was still quite a nightmare.

...

Backwards compatibility is not just about writing a great emulator. Sony stated that all games that respect TRCs would be compatible. In fact games are full of bugs, and a very large part of the work is fixing bugs in the games, not fixing the emulator.

In fact we do have the entire PS2 running in software on PS3 already at full speed. It is only in its final testing phases since we have to test many thousands of games... you know because if someone finds a little problem it'll be pasted on forums everywhere :).

Any insight on this?

yes. Posting anonymous gossip from other forums is to be frowned on! Any chump can claim to be working on a project. Could be all made, so there's no point discussing it without some sort of credibility to back it up.

I ve seen that same exact post somewhere else but I cant remember where. It wasnt from that forum thats for sure

I would be too considering some of the posters in that forum. Man I thought GameFAQ's was bad. Jesus, pcvsconsoles....just wow.

Anyway back on topic, I'm with Shifty on this, that could be anyone making stuff up, unless there is something substantial he can back it up with then there's no basis for accepting his claims.

Yeah, guys at neogaf are already drooling. Aparently there is some small issues. One user has reported that his savegames for MGS2:SOL are missing, and one has reported bad sound in Okami [but that is just on his console, other users dont have this problem].

Anyway, i'm still waiting for software ps2 emulation...

... all my ps2 savegames are missing...

They were there last time I played, and now the entire PS2 internal memory card is wiped clean. I noticed something was wrong when I popped in Jak 3... total bummer.

P.S. oh, and I'm new here sooooo.... Greetings everyone!

Probably for enhanced graphics through software emulation. I tested some PS1 emulators a few years back, and the games looked much better through emulation than on real hardware.

You must have had those half dozen games that actually worked under emulation.

Yeah. I dont ask for some fancy new effects, just that games should be rendered in HD. [not scaled up to HD.]

I don't have a PS2 anymore so I can't compare, but according to these two videos colours seem darker or desaturated when output from the PS3.

That last vid was put together by a real effin' tool btw, but it was linked on Ars and really demonstrates what I'm talking about.

That was BS. The bug was fixed in 1.5, so the video is old. Their reason for the artifacts is laughable, the Internet is a dangerous thing when any ****** can make a video and post it.

I can already confirm that the 480i output has been fixed--I'm seeing it right now--but I do notice that FFXII seems a lot darker on my ps3 than I remember it being on my ps2. In fact there are areas in the game where I can barely make out any detail at all, and I think this has to do with how the PS3 outputs colour.

I also just noticed that the 2nd video isn't necessarily a controlled comparison as the poster used HDMI on the PS3 and component on the PS2. A side-by-side comparison, like the one in that vid, of colour output using the same component cable would be better.
