I wouldn't call myself a PS2 fan, just someone who chose to buy a PS2 in favour the other two. I think Johnny's being pretty fair with his last two posts. Overall I do feel the PS2 is weak in texturing and filtering capabilities. Even the amazing ICO, when zoomed in have walls that resemble Quake1. Massive geometry, spectacular lighting and stella art direction is all good but has nothing to do with poor texturing, which is evident. I don't see what's the big deal either, if it has something lacking then so be it, enjoy it for what it is, why fight it?

Maybe out of curiosity why Sony made such a big mistake, what exactly the mistake is, and if it is a mistake at all?

WTF is your point? There is always something better, compare "texturing" of X-Box/GC with the latest agp-cards and you will see weaknesses too. As soon as you leave the shop with any hardware, it will be outdated right away.

As a ps2/DC/Gc owner, I think some people are too much good memories about the DC and bad ideas about the ps2.

For example, soule Reaver 2 looked better on ps2 than Soul Reaver 1 on Dc, V Rally 3 is better looking than V Rally 2 on Dc (even thru VGA), Ecco is better looking on the ps2 as well, sol Calibur 2 seems (i did not checked myself) better on ps2 than the first one on Dc.

So if the ps2 has weak texturing, how is this possible ??

I don’t know about the other games, I haven’t tried them on both consoles but Ecco does definitely not look better on PS2, it has a bit better framerate but the textures are more blurry than on the DC (the added special PS2 gallery section has some of the best textures on that machine though).

Well comparing sequels to the originals is hardly fair. Sequels usually look better than the originals even on the same platform

Ecco looks nowhere near as good on PS2 as it does on Dreamcast. The textures aren't as vivid or as sharp as the Dreamcast version. The framerate may be a little bitter, but the overall IQ is sacrificed just as much as the F355 port to the PS2.

I like to clarify that although im more in favour of Xbox, but i am by no means HATErX PS2. Damnit! I have a PS2, have plenty of PS2 games. Why should i buy a console if i HATE it?

Im just offering criticism on how Sony handled the PS2 hardware(from hype to delivery). Actually i would keep mum most of the time, if only there werent that many PS2 apologists who thinketh of untapped powers, emotional capabilities, textures wowaza and keeping up with new consoles.

Let me say, that is as irritating as DC people still clinging on to Shenmue as best graphic ever!

I hope others can take things from a non hardcore PS2 fanny POV.

I'm talking about the end result, not a comparison of some possibly doctored preview screenshots. And the first one was more than a port, it got higher rez textures and some jump in polygones too.

game quality isn't just due to the console...

There's a lot of individual variations....

Ecco and F355 are premium quality DC titles that both had quite quick ports to PS2, ( as did Crazy Taxi ) so it might even be a bit unfair to expect them to completely exceed the originals ( The same argument can also be applied to the Xbox version of MGS2 )

Chap is right that the Xbox games will often have better textures - the combination of S3TC compression and twice as much memory makes it hard to argue otherwise..
The ICO argument from JF_Aidan_Pryde is interesting, as it assumes the developer designed the textures to look good zoomed in, and didnt just balance the memory use against the more common viewports...

As has been discussed before, VQ and then S3TC give the best visual quality for a given memory footprint when compared as single large textures - For a straight conversion from DC to PS2 the conversion of VQ texture assets to 8bit CLUTs blindly would definitely cause some reduction in quality, even though the extra memory should keep the texture resolution the same.
However I would argue that in most cases PS2 games are better than DC - ( Sarges Heroes / Quake 3 compare well ) and I wouldn't expect a conversion of Halo to look better than the Xbox version ( or a conversion of SplinterCell for that matter )
