PS2 outselling XBox 360

MS never took preorders from the general pubic, they have no legal obligation to fill those orders. They do however have a legal obligation to fill the orders that they took from the retailers, and probably did fill them in the order that they received them. Sure, they probably set aside a predetermined amount for Best Buy when they signed the promotional contract with them, but overall they were almost certainly filling orders on a first come-first served basis.

Well, that wouldn't fit in very well with eb's complaints, would it?

so they had pre-orders for HDD units ahead of Premiums?

RancidLunchmeat *yawn*

Yes.

They put the full inventory up for retailers to order from at the same time. Systems and Accessories. Naturally some retailers would order hard drives before others ordered systems.

If EB had a valid complaint why didn't they persue it? Clearly it caused them financial damage, so if they even suspected wrongdoing on MS's part why didn't they do anything about it?

eb not EB ;)

As Chef pointed out, I was referring to the user's complaints about lack of supply, not any complaints the electronics store may or may not have had.

I believe we're in agreement on this issue, it's not very complicated.

So I'll ask the obvious question, how come the NPD numbers don't add up? Only 2million sold in the US? Yet 5 million WW.

Either:
a) NPD numbers are totally inaccurate
b) 3million units have sold WW (60%)
c) 'Sold' number is actually shipped, or 'sold to retailers' and 1-2million units are still in the retail/shipping chain.

I assume it's much like the way Sony reports their sales, and what we don't see are the ones sitting in the retail channel. Only at the moment, it seems like larger percentage than one would expect, if the NPD numbers are correct.

Or maybe Europe decided to go apeshit and show off. ;) Only 60k sold in Japan, and I know of no other major markets for them out east. Australia has probably sold more than that, but...

Not that anyone really cares about us, and it's hardly a benchmark but...

I have a high proportion of geeky mates (did Com-Sci and Software Engineering at uni, etc) and only know one person who has a 360. This to me makes me think it's not too hot over here.

From: http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3478&Itemid=2

In its fiscal fourth quarter, ended June 30, the firm sold 1.8 million units. In total it has sold 3.3 million machines in the U.S., 1.3 million in Europe and 400,000 elsewhere.

Also:

Microsoft has targeted itself to ship 15 million Xbox 360s within the next 12 months.

Looks a bit high if you ask me, but they probably know it best...

It's c)

Pretty deceptive language, but whatever. They've sold ~3 million WW, to consumers, and 5 million WW to retailers.

In other words, there are currently ~2 million 360s sitting on store shelves.

I think they've misquoted it (or I've misread it). From the source:

By holiday 2006, we believe we will have shipped more than 10 million Xbox 360 consoles worldwide and have an expected catalog of 160 high-definition games. The E&D team is carrying strong momentum into FY07 with anticipated growth expected to benefit from holiday sales of Xbox 360. E&D forecasts fiscal year 2007 guidance for Xbox 360 unit sales between 8 to 10 million consoles. The yearly guidance implies that by the end of the fiscal year we will have sold 13 to 15 million Xbox 360 consoles since launch.

Here's some stats. to digest for July...
while Xbox sales fell 91 percent for the month......While startling, the decline in Xbox sales was in large part due to the popularity of the Xbox 360, which plays many of its forebear's games. Microsoft sold a total of 207,000 units during the month; so far, the console has sold 2.2 million units in the US alone. However, while impressive, the July Xbox 360 figures are a 26 percent decrease from June, despite high-profile releases such as Prey.
Other than Prey, what're the other high profile releases that occurred in July? And wasn't June a 5 week month? Comparing sales month to month is not very accurate, which is why year-to-year is commonly use.

btw what u do what do measure it by last years xb360 sales? no. perhaps the first july of the ps2 or xb1 perhaps? well someone will supply the data then (fik off been watching father ted tonight)

Sorry--a lot of "in the know" posters kept saying that June was a 5 week month, meaning that 5 full weeks were counted for NPD. I have no idea how the sales are actually computed and for what date range, so I just took them at face value.

Also, just because you don't have last year's data to compare it to doesn't mean you can compare it to whatever you like. That's all I'm trying to say.
