PS2 outselling XBox 360

Thank you for the info! I'm considering one myself, was just waiting for better hardware to hit the market. Interesting that they made changes to the hardware without releasing a new version, how odd.

indeed.

first thing I noticed was that it was cool ... soooo much cooler than the launch. The old one used to raise the temp of the DVD pretty high after a play session but this one feels only warm and the exhaust seems much cooler compared to the old.... very nice. :)

How about in the dollar amount?

PS2 664K @ $130 = $86M
360 511K @ $400 = $205M
WII 476K @ $250 = $119M
PS3 197K @ $600 = $118M

PS: At this pace, Sony could have just survived with PS2 without PS3. :p

Hong.

With the PS2 selling like this, I doubt if the arrival of the PS3 in numbers next march or beyond will dent PS2 sales. What is more, they are not competing with each other because they are at the two price extremes in the market, so Sony will have two platforms in the market that will both be selling well.

I wonder if Microsoft made a big mistake killing off the XBox. Apart from everything else, it means the software sales Microsoft spent billions cultivating by subsidising the XBox will dry up prematurely.

On the other hand, they will get into the black quicker with X360 now because they don't have to subsidize the hardware costs of xbox1.

The billions spent were more of an investment in the creation of the brand (how much is the XBOX brand worth? Quite a bit I would think), and services like XBLive, that they can leverage in future generations.

there a thread about it, anyway it's useless to have two thread who speak about the same stuff, so i 'll paste my reaction.

there is ~350.00ps3 out they have to ship 650.000 in three weeks....

Sony will never learn... they want to be even more ridiculous...
Instead of take account of their problems, make a clear road map for the ps3 update, dev tools, etc... and execute, they 're still in the "the ps3 are coming don't buy the 360 or the wii" Pr who fail, it chrismass people have to buy something... They could react, show people and industry they are working in the good direction.
Sometime I hope sony will take a huge backslash and will stop thinking consumer are so stupîd.

I trust a single word of this PR...

I'm somewhat upset ny Sony attitude...
What does its marketting section?
The whole internet laught at them and at theirs trollish PR, it a fact.
Sony it 's facing it worst time since it has enter the game market, and it makes its PR even wose...
For people who have some interest over the web it's more and more the fun station 3 runnig gag.
I want MS to succed but i don't want MS to come anywhere close to the situation it's in the OS market, no thanks!

Do they understand that to some extend they're ruining their credibility? they are doing anti marketting...lol

They would better come and say : ok we have some probleme, but come on people we have put together the most powerfull console of the generation, linux is here and running quiet well, and the ps3 is the better BR player of the market and it's upgradable!!!
So Ok, this hollyday won't be successfull, but we're here for the long run, and finish the PR with date of the future update for the br players, firmware, etc...

I can believe Sony doesn't understand that at this time this kind of Pr is counter productive and make them and worse the brand ps3 ridiculous.

What else do you want them to do? They're in a tough position and they've done everything they can in order to try to stop people from buying the 360. From CGI trailers, to promising launch dates they knew they wouldn't make, to promising huge differences in quality, to continuing to promise availability they know they can't provide.

Honestly, all their PR rubbish had a much greater impact before the PS3 demo units went out and people believed there was an actual reason to wait. So the only question was 'How long is the wait?'

Then, their production distortions made sense. "Wait 6 months and you'll get a better product!"

That isn't the case anymore, and any consumer who wants to can walk into Best Buy or Game Stop or some such place and look at the 360 and PS3 demo units side by side. I think their "Just wait.. we'll have our product on the shelves soon" has lost a great deal of implact.

So what do you expect Sony to do, say "The ps3 isn't coming yet so buy the XBox 360 or the Wii instead for now"?

Sony can't produce as many PS3s as they need to because of the blue diode shortage due to poor yield. Negative PR is all they have for now. There is also no point hyping the PS3 with positive PR - that will just get more people annoyed because when they go down to the shops they find they can't buy one.

you're right (RancidLunchmeat) but I guess they could do better anyway.
I'm french but i've spend one month and an half in USA (ohio) so I've walked in some best buy and I had the chance to see the demo units of both ps3 and 360 side by side.
I haven't been impressed by what I've seen on the ps3, motorstorm is not so great.
But I come here and I learn there is some newer demo of the very same game downloadable for ps3 users witch looks way better...
Sony marketting should have send new versions of the different demo at least to all the big retailer.

After that, I think it could be better for them to be more humble announce a road map of update.
And starting to hype some games for E3 2007.
they have no other choice to keep people attention, but if sony have also no games plan I hope them a merry 2007 chrismass too.

Anyway, for mass market I guess all these pr talk is irrevelant.
the more revelant part is that I feel that in front of hardware issues Sony not seems able to react on the others fronts, Sony is still far from being the loser this gen, it turns from arrogant to what seems a lake of confidence. KK was right in ihis last PR about the strenght of Sony they 're encoutering problems.
Now they would have to show arrogance and an astounding confidence in the quality of their product.

They can't delivers enought units=> the marketting to its job sending new demo and trailers at a fast rate to the main retailers (it's just an exemple, what hurts me is the pseudo lake of positive reaction to stressing concurrency...).
Sony needs a huge shake and have to react using all the possibility it have even if crismass 06 is a dead end.

I hope that wasn't your first and only trip to the US. I'd hate to have anybody believe Ohio is a representative sample of the US! :D

Here? As in B3D? I haven't heard that the motorstorm demo available for download is any different (let alone improved) than the version that is in the demo kiosks. That's news to me.

I don't agree with the 'humble' aspect. Nobody really cares if anybody lied to them except a handful of really hardcore consumers and those people usually fall into two categories 1) Fans who will buy the product anyway and forgive the exaggerations or 2) Consumers with enough money to buy multiple consoles who will buy the product anyway.

I do agree with the hyping future games, though. What Sony should be doing instead of spending (I say it's wasting) money advertising their current lineup, is advertising CGI trailers of games "Available 2007". Use their past CGI tactics at E3, but on a commercial scale. Who cares if they can't live up to the hype when the game arrives a year or two in the future?

As far as Christmas 2007.. that's the line in the sand. Sony needs to do extremely well next holiday season and they need MS to only do well (as opposed to great) this holiday season. Sony has a great deal of 'catchup room' they need to make between now and 2010, and the bulk of that has to come in the 2007 holiday season.

Yes, by all accounts it is better, It's been discussed for a while on the Motorstorm thread in Console games on this very forum.

This figure is from the Nintendo press conference on Dec. 7. It shows the total sales in the 4 European markets (the UK, Germany, France, Spain).
