NEC was indeed the first company to have CD-ROM for a game console. It happened in 1988 in Japan, I believe.

Dreamcast had a browser

Dreamcast had many, many different web browsers. One family of browsers per major region.
PlanetWeb 3.0 even had pJava.

What happened to this thread?

I think it's the typical outcome of a conversation that was started without direction. Rumours of new development hardware don't give us much to talk about, so conversation waffles until someone has the sense to pull the plug.

I guess there is scope for an official rumours thread for each platform, collating rumours over the months as they happen, but I imagine it'd need a lot of policing to stop the sort of meandering talk as demonstrated here.
