PS Business Briefing 2006 March official info

Just cause you know a guy, somewhere who found one, what does that mean?

Just drop it man, you're argiung a ridiculous position. There is still a huge 360 shortage in north america, if you find one it's only through luck or persistence.

Why then can I find one online? And the "guy i just know" is a lab mate of mine. There are shortages in that stocks are low but the 360 is no longer impossible to get. I'm not lucky in that clicking on futureshop or bestbuy that supply is there.

Possibly Europe. I've seen 360s available for purchase on shelves locally for a couple of months now. Though that wouldn't make the response very relevant to commentary on the US, as I know see ;)
Regardless of location, anecdotal evidence of console sales and/or supply-demand issues based on what you see in your local stores is the most innaccurate gauge there could be.

If Edge is to be believd, and Europe and Japan are untouchable and NA sales have plummeted to 160,000 a month (and will only get worse if it's a sales decline) then MS should throw in the towel now. Obviously this line of thinking is silly and influenced more by product preference (or company dislike) rather than any real data--hence the reliance on personal experience.

Well why don't you order it up and see how long it takes to get to you....previously futureshop has only released online orders in specific quantities and they have sold out in 30 or 40 minutes. Now it seems to be open ended...

Maybe that's because they're expecting some sort of mass replenishment in april...just like gamestop, ebgames and bestbuy hmmmm?

Edit: Damn I'm on fire today....goto Checkout at Futurehop or best buy...what do they show as a ship date? Drumroll please............. March 23. Bingo. So Bestbuy, Futureshop, Ebgames & Gamestop all taking open ended preorders and prmising to ship on March 23 or 24th, still think MS is not stockpiling consoles?

I'd order it up but I'm planning on buying an iPod video, and I don't think my grilfriend would like it if I spent 400+ CAD on another game console rather than rent and food and stuff, damn it sucks being a grad student. And plus, there really is no games out for the 360 that I want. Having too much fun with MGO. Besides, if I get a new console it would be a DS Lite. Those things are awesome.

But if anyone here on Beyond3D would like to donate money for me to get one then I'm all for it!

This article has a couple of interesting/different comments..

He said the delay was mostly a result of a strategic decision to give developers time to write game software, while still making a splash in Europe and North America before the Christmas shopping rush.

"Instead of rushing, we want to have a solid launch," Mr. Kutaragi said. "We wanted to have time to make the big sales season."

But he said that this and other technical problems would be resolved by June, and that Sony could have introduced PlayStation 3 earlier had it chosen to do so.

"We were discussing selling it in September, and some even said put it out in July," Mr. Kutaragi said.

Playing it safe with Nov? Also might perhaps bode well for early manufacturing?

Umm, no, and like i said, what's the point of stockpiling it? MS should market the hell out of the games coming out, not the availability of their console.

March 23? That's no big deal. I order Sims 2 and Sim 2 University at amazon.ca and it didn't even leave the docks till a week later. This is Sims! man. Why the long ship dates for a game like that I don't know. but still not convinced of massive shortages.

Rumors are, Apple may intro an iPod with a larger screen in time for their 30th anniversary on April 1st.

Rummors may not turn out to be true but their anniversary really is April 1st.

Which is a Saturday.

I think it definitely bodes well for developers and gamers. Just get the stuff ready and out the door when it's done. I don't care of spec increases, I just want a functioning machine when the time arrives.

Now hopefully I'll get a nice cushy job with the government after I defend in August!

Sorry for going off topic (again, ), but thanks for the tip. That's why I haven't ordered yet. Though, if they have an iPod nano with more storage than I'll get that, I just don't like the fact that the nano has less capacity than my 1G iPod at 5 GB.

I already explained the point of stockpiling liek 4 posts ago, you're free to check it out.

I'm chalking you up to a lost cause. The fact 4 of the biggest retailers in NA all show the exact same dates for shipping of their unlimited preorders is just a coincidence...sure it is.

And the fact that no futureshop or bestbuy is actually showing ANY 360 stock in-store is not enough to convince you of a shortage...I don't know what else I can say. Believe what you will I guess..

p.s. Maybe you missed this on the FS site: "Out of Stock: Will ship when available" strange how the ship date matches the other major retailers...awfully peculiar ain't it?

Theyve already stated manufacturing data, which always tend to be best case. I dont think its worthwhile to try and uncover any more than the actual facts we've been given. For all we know the quote could have been "Put it out in July wihtout HDMI 1.3", but what's the point anyway, we'd only be trying to get to a point where we know how many units they could deliver per month and how many they would have for launch, which we pretty much know already.

EDIT: If sony wants to sell the idea that having 2 million units for a holiday season in which they could sell twice that is "solid", then more power to them.

So February's numbers are a good look into MS manufacturing numbers, and it's 100 days till June. Unless MS can increase manufacturing between now and then, and assuming demand can absorb that increase, then it's quite clear MS cannot meet it's target, unless they lie.

If MS should lie, than Xbox fans will reject the console en mass, and all become Nintendo fans, or non-fans of any console, if Nintendo should ever be caught in a lie.

First of all, why don't you tell me what the "february numbers" worldwide are? And I don't want any half baked extrapolation, if you have the #'s lets here them.

What does this all have to do with the PS briefing? I'm surprised that I got carried away with an offtopic discussion and I've pretty much given up on it. But I have a feeling lockage is in order unless the discussion is back on track.

this thread was rated 4 stars so let's keep it that way.

Sorry back on topic.

I have a question about the HDMI spec, what does the upgraded spec offer the PS3? Interms of gaming or Blu-ray video?

HDMI 1.3 means that the PS3 can send Dolby Digital HD and DTS HD over HDMI in their native format without having to convert them to PCM first.

EDIT:Just an FYI, this is really only for BR movie playback and goes to KK's point on how the PS3 wouldnt be a 'poor man's BR player'. If it couldnt do this then the hardcore would certainly label it a such.

It also supports better colour-resolution and higher refreshrates in 1080p: http://www.hdmi.org/press/pr/pr_20060103.asp

The main thing to stop Sony from being No. 1, would be Sony. They are doing everything well, and so the status quo will not change.

I'm sorry but that gave me a really good laugh.
Pushing the release date back 6 months and announcing a worldwide launch that'll make the X360 launch a full success is certainly a prime example of 'doing everything well', yes...

I would be very surprised to see any changes to the PS3's memory configuration at this point. RSX is completed with its memory controller, so is Cell. What's perhaps even more important is that developers have already budgeted their assets based on the specs and are well into production using those specs. Rearranging anything in the hardware would probably make nAo and Deano jump out of the window...

Maybe you are looking at a different thing? Deep color representation on future TVs is important for HDR in gaming, let alone higher frame rates. Besides, it's not decided if it's called HDMI 1.3.
