Predict: The Next Generation Console Tech

Maybe by mid next year during the next E3 gpu performance mobile AMD reach at least 70/80% of a high-end GTX 580.

If this is achieved would be great to customize a version for consoles that were released in 2013.

If the 6990M benches anywhere close to the 6870 that it appears to be (slightly lower clock?) than they're already at the 70%.

<edit> guess the clock is lower than I thought (25%)

Would still use way too much power I guess, even more so if they want to go with a SOC / fusion design. But maybe with lower clockrates it would be possible, but the GPU alone uses already 1,7 billion transistors. This is already more than Llano (which is on 32nm). Also I don't know if they would really use a VLIW5 design (Trinity will be VLIW4 iirc)

Sorry if this has been posted and discussed before, hard to keep up with this thread sometimes =p

Anyways, an AMD employee posted this on GAF a few months ago:

I have information that a next gen console will be debuting next fall. My company just got commissioned for making a next gen cpu for one of the console makers, and they need us to push it so they can make launch of next fall. Not going to disclose any more than that.

Since the Wii-U has been confirmed to use an IBM CPU, this would mean Sony or MS plan to use an AMD CPU and launch next year.

I'm not sure any new player would be bright to get in at this point. Too many people trying to get a piece of the pie only means less for all.

Or a new player?

Forgive me if i misunderstood (doing 3 things at same time .and post),but it seems to me that someone who is already on the market.

Next fall? This year or next year?

About "making a next gen cpu for one of the console makers .." Is that MS is dropping powerpc(so APU is confirmed for MS)?

If accurate information on the other hand we know that AMD is not with Sony(Powerpc a2 or ARM A15 annyone?).

"and they need us to push it so they can make launch of next fall" - Should be the delivery of the units manufactured in the final SDK for developers, perhaps for them this would be the "launch" ..

If Microsoft is so big on BC isn't AMD CPU out of the question?

Also, I read somewhere that AMD's X86 license doesn't even allow them to be in consoles? Or perhaps at least, doesn't allow them to sign away the IP like console manufacturers need.

I dont know, Microsoft or Sony launching a console with an AMD CPU in 2012 sounds very unlikely to me. We also know Halo 4 for 360 hits in fall 2012, another reason to doubt it. They could conceivably launch a new console and a Halo for the old one the same fall, but yeah, not likely.

I dont know, I'm just a little tired of that one single GAF rumor, as it's constantly regurgitated there. "Random forum poster" ranks lower on the credibility scale than "random two bit website" for me, and nobody has a problem dismissing the latter.

If anything Shifty's idea of a new contender (Samsung and Apple are the only two I can think of) is most intriguing. But still there, you'd have to think we'd be hearing things already. We do get countless unlikely two bit website stories of Ps4 and Xb3 in 2012, so at least that part could work out for those two.

I cant say the AMD thing is totally false but I have a hard time fitting it with any other available info to make any sense.

Wild question: couldn't AMD make an applications processor without x86 compliance?

Sorry if was post before.

Google (!) and Apple on console market!?

http://www.gamespot.com/news/632357...-game-console-war-thq-ceo?tag=newstop;title;5

It sounds APUs,Sandybridge/Ivybridge(IBM bye bye..) like for everyone?

Games at US$10 OMG(very cheap or going way much more expensive ...game chapter 1,2 and 3 = US$10... I know..exaggerated but ...) !

"service orientation of the gamer" =~ Increased focus on interactivity and services for gamers (what does mean this..see youtube in a little window and playing at same time?)?

(And here I thought the Wii was the end of the core market ...)

(it sounds APUs AMD for everyone?)

Meanwhile, Apple has heavily courted the gamer audience with its iOS handheld devices.

Does in no way signal an entrance into competition in the console market. I'm sure they'd like to get their hands on some of those dollars but it will probably be just by trying to market gaming on ipad or something. In the same way I'm sure Google is much more targeted at Facebook and that gaming audience than console gamers. It could certainly affect dollars in the console market as it has become more casual, but again I wouldn't expect to see any serious foray into direct console competition.

If MS does partner with ATI again for their next-gen gpu, what series of graphics cards might seem possible for the next xbox? 4000 series? 5000? 6000?

Wouldn't they use current tech like they did in the 360? If they aren't launching till 2013 or 2014, I think you need to look at what product is going to be available for that timeline and expect something based on that rather than anything available now.

So true, a AMD based solution with GPU+CPU in 2013 is going to be a powerhouse. Bulldozer cores, and whatever they have on the roadmap for GPU combined in one chip.

It´s going to be tough for Sony if they choose to go with a "Sony" solution, weird CPU and old GPU :)

It makes sense for MS to go back to the x86 world if they want Windows 8 on everything from phones to consoles.

I am still hoping for a Cell based PS3 with an over the top GPU sucking 400 watts and weighing a ton :)

Probably just MS's latest attempt to kill PC gaming.

*looks around for MfA*
Microsoft is schizophrenic ... it has no single aim ... AFAICS the predominant direction though is to try to position the PC for social games, while trying to drive PC gamers towards the XBOX 360 for the rest.

If I see them launch some major RPG or FPS titles on GfWL and XBOX 360 simultaneously I'll believe differently. I imagine those will stay on steam&co rather than having GfWL integration though as far as the PC is concerned, or launch with great delay on the PC.
