Predict: The Next Generation Console Tech

Even if that's the case and they all have the exact same tech ... what compelling reason then is there for a casual gamer to buy WiiHD over xb720 or ps4?

This gen, the waggle was the hook. Next gen ...?

I think only Nintendo knows that at this point, but I´m intrigued to find out. I am expecting a camera to be part of it in some way.

There are alternatives to using shutters, something "simple" like a very fast switch to drain the capacitors on the CCD would do it could do it for instance (not simple). Dunno if 3DV patents covers something like that. Regardless it would take significant R&D to catch up with 3DV (assuming they really have a cheap shutter ready to go).

Will still don't know what tech behind this implementation other than what was included the press kit...

How Does “Project Natal” Work?

• “Project Natal” sensor. “Project Natal” is the world’s first system to combine an RGB camera, depth sensor, multiarray microphone and custom processor running proprietary software that brings “Project Natal” experiences to every Xbox 360 console. The “Project Natal” sensor tracks full-body movement and individual voices, creating controller-free fun and social entertainment available only on Xbox 360.

• RGB camera. “Project Natal” has a video camera that delivers the three basic color components. As part of the “Project Natal” sensor, the RGB camera helps enable facial recognition and more.

• Depth sensor. An infrared projector combined with a monochrome CMOS sensor allows “Project Natal” to see the room in 3-D (as opposed to inferring the room from a 2-D image) under any lighting conditions.

• Multiarray microphone. “Project Natal” has a microphone that will be able to locate voices by sound and extract ambient noise. The multiarray microphone will enable headset-free Xbox LIVE party chat and more.

• Custom processor (running Microsoft proprietary software layer). A proprietary software layer makes the magic of “Project Natal” possible. This layer differentiates “Project Natal” from any other technology on the market through its ability to enable human body recognition and extract other visual noise.

Any of that sound like the tech from 3DV? What about PrimeSense, Canessa or GestureTek? Nintendo & Sony could use go with any of their technology if Microsoft just got 3DV.

Assuming N can get their hands on tech similar, I still see them having a very difficult time separating themselves from the pack...

If you all were working for N, what direction would you advice them to go for their next system?

Canesta or 3DV for the depth sensor. Canesta seem a little too proud of all their patents as opposed to their actual products BTW.

Prime Sense seems to only infer depth from motion, which doesn't really correspond to calling it a depth sensor (but that might of course just be fluff). The part about the custom processor and body recognition on the other hand does sound a bit like Prime Sense PR.

GestureTek "only" does gesture recognition, this really comes on top of the camera technology ... having depth just makes things a whole lot easier.

It looks like that now Natal is on rail Ms want to milking the 360 till 2015
A 2013 launch seems more and more likely for their next system.
Between Ms is showing confidence in the legs its system have.

Could just be a smoke screen statement to throw off the competition.

That's one of the good things about having a pc developer community. MS can lean on them to port their hi-end pc wares in relatively short time to their next gen system. Of course, the same could be done with in-house dev teams, but this limits your launch library.

I think both MS and Sony will have to be ready to launch by the end of 2011. MS has seen the difference in launching a year early and a year late. Sony has also been biten with a late launch now and seen the fruits of launching a year before MS and N.

Neither will want to give the competition a year head start on the market.

I wouldn't be surprised if they treat Natal as a separate platform as it will give the xb360 architecture legs long into 2015. xb360+Natal will likely be very comparable to whatever Nintendo cooks up with Wii2.

This lets them compete in the casual space, and keep the hardcore crowd with xb720.

Timing is crucial.

At this point, I'd say let's wait and see how Natal actually materialises as a real product. There's a lot of promise there but no guarantees it'll be delivered.
I agree 100%. MS has hyped a lot of stuff that either never came to pass, or wasn't nearly as amazing in its real-world incarnation.

Such as, Crysis, Crysis Warhead and Crysis 2?

Interesting quote from Iwata:

Iwata said:
If we have an opportunity to make a new console, it will probably support HD because it is now common throughout the world. However, as far as the Wii is concerned, we have not found a significant reason to make it HD-compatible at this time. What is the significant meaning to the users? I don’t think we should do it unless we find that reason. If we decide for other reasons to make new hardware, then HD is one of the things we would naturally add.

He basically puts to bed all the silly "Wii HD" rumours and confirms their next piece of hardware will be targeting HD resolutions. Outside of that the interview is well worth a read, Iwata is a really intelligent guy.

The Nintendo brand name slapped on the side for one..

Dont underestimate it,,

I read a recent analyst report, and I should probably try to google it and link it since I dont have it offhand, but I found it pretty interesting, the basic crux was, looking at consoles as game theory, there being a advantage to be gained by who jumps first into next gen. Only this time, they said they see none of the 3 players having any compelling reason to go next gen, so they dont see it happening for a while.

I totally see that. Nintendo is selling Wii's and making profit hand over fist, they have no reason to go next gen. Sony, trying to recover the huge PS3 losses, and with a high priced system that needs to come down, have no reason, and MS, comfortable with 360's position, and also trying to recoup major losses, and also with a historically still high priced system, has no reason either.

I think if either Sony or MS was killing the other, then the killee would feel pressure. But that doesnt seem to be happening. PS3 sales are fine worldwide relative to 360 given the price. For MS, despite there being an attempt to paint the 360 as aging, faltering hardware, they are competing in hardware sales with Sony just fine, probably better than most thought they would be at this point.

Didn't people saythat about the PlayStation brand name this gen? ;)

Except that there are a whole lot of "older" people who Nintendo targeted knowing they have a brand association from when they were younger and buying a NES/SNES for their children.

I'd compare it to how my parents and grandparents think of Toy Story, Finding Nemo, etc as "Disney movies" while to me (30 yr old) they are Pixar movies.

So my mother in law says she's taking my kid to the new Disney movie and I say "What Disney movie?"

"Up"

And I respond "OH! Pixar's latest."

Not exactly the same, but you get my drift?

OK damienw please explain what happened to N64 and the Gamecube after the resounding success of the Super Famicom (SNES)?

The public is a fickle beast, best to never underestimate it - Sony learnt that the hard way with PS3.
