PlayStation classic 99 dollars (3rd December 2018)

Part of the settlement could be the ROM site handing over all data to Nintendo. However, surely they have the capacity to rip their own ROMs? An 'expensive' cartridge on eBay will be pittance to Nintendo and the potential returns on selling it.

The stupid part is why the (S)NES Mini and Sony PS Classic don't have network services to sell more content to.

Because that is a more complicated device to sell, support, maintain and secure and these 'classic' devices are cheap money grabs. :yep2:

We read articles about such products selling out quickly but they are produced in relatively small quantities and building a backend to support downloads, sales, refunds and provide customer service is neither trivial or cheap. It's just not worth it for the tiny minority who buy such devices over those who already emulate old games pretty much for free.

Re-releasing old games which includes licensing is expensive and can involve new licensing agreements. The original PlayStation ushered in a generation which vicariously used licensed visuals and audio which makes this way more complicated that the classic NES which used, for the most part, original or derivative chip tunes. Plus in terms of the storage required to store such games your talking about a couple of magnitudes of order. :yep2:

I'd genuinely be surprised if this nets any notable profit for Sony at all.

You'd think there'd be a Nintendo vault somewhere with all their past consoles, plus entire games catalogs and hardware of yore, and possibly the cryogenically frozen body of Iwata.

If there's a PS4 Micro, I'd love them to make a run that looks like the PS2.

In fact, I hereby swear a vow to cross my fingers until it's released.

Wish me luck.

Sony, have mercy.

I think they actually do have something along those lines. With the snes classic they included star fox 2, which was a complete and ready to mass produce game but went unreleased. Betas of the game had leaked out years ago, but the version on the system never was. I find it unlikely that they had a copy of a never released game, but don't have all the actually released ones.

Also the "proof" that they downloaded roms for virtual console was the fact that the rom was in the ines emulation format. From what I've read one of the guys that made their emulation worked on nes emulation before working for Nintendo and just used his prior experience with that format, as nes roms have to have meta data describing how the rom data is mapped or mirrored.

you'd think but look at Hollywood so much from the early years is lost because it was expensive to store since film was so flammable and took up tons of storage. I am sure while maybe not as flammable it would still take up a ton of room to store all these games at the time. Now of course you can fit every game from the Atari through the 16 bit games on a single cd or dvd or bluray. Back then not so much

first PlayStation Classic unboxing. It seems to be very big for a mini console. It's almost as big as a PS1 -and that one could be converted into a handheld-. Where is the DC? Had the guy to bring it from home in his pocket?

The innards -software- from Sony, it uses RetroArch?

https://docs.libretro.com/library/pcsx_rearmed/ has fellow forumer @Exophase worked on it?

if you think the main unit is big, take a look at the controller. It's about as big as the original! So much for a mini...

/joke

Still don't know why Microsoft haven't released a classic Xbox. They could practically slap in a Kabini APU and call it a day.

Maybe even make it handheld. Halo portable .

;) as long as you bring an AC adapter with you inside your pocket, you should do just fine

It'd probably just be easier (and a helluvalot cheaper) to do a collector's item mini-chassis/shell with download codes for BC, not that they have that many titles at the moment. People can just use their current consoles while not having a shit-upscale experience.

According to digital foundry it is a disappoinent performance wise. They have a mix if PAL and NTSC games which means some games play slow. The NTSC games don't perform as well as the original. What have they been thinking?

Because they dont want to resell you the same game three times over, so they focus on their backwards compatibility?

When you have a big brand like PS, one must consider the cost to the brand image such a sub-par product may have versus the moneygrab it provides.
