Playstation 5 [PS5] [Release November 12 2020]

They may be alluding to this part 🤷‍♂️ ?

Change in Fiscal Year G&NS Revenue : Operating income YoY
  • +864.177 billion Yen (+32.3%) : -96.083 billion Yen (-27.8%)
Change in Q4 G&NS Revenue : Operating income YoY
  • +388.809 billion Yen (+60.1%) : -48.391 billion Yen (-55.5%)
Those represent the change in revenue and operating income. Both were positive on the year and on the quarter but while revenue increased significantly YoY, operating income decreased significantly YoY.
  • Fiscal year may be affected by the Bungie acquisition, but Q4 won't.
    • It depends on how Sony accounts for the acquisition.
  • They might actually be paying more per PS5 built now in order to increase supply.
    • This is likely how we saw such dramatic spike in supply
    • Makes me curious if PS5 is now selling at a loss or break even after having sold at a profit for most of it's lifetime.
  • Software sales might be down, those represent most of the operating profit generated.
  • Inflation and currency exchange rates weren't kind to them over the past year.
That made me curious to look at the software/hardware breakdown. They only provide Revenue numbers for this, but it is certainly interesting and enlightening. Again, FY : Q4 change.
  • Digital Software and Add-On Content. +98.586 billion Yen (+6.9%) : +39.358 billion Yen (+11.0%)
  • Network Services. +55.321 billion Yen (+13.5%) : +14.523 billion Yen (+13.9%)
  • Hardware and Others. +710.270 billion Yen (+84.5%) : +334.928 billion Yen (+180.4%)
So, game sales didn't go down but it only went up a small amount. Hardware OTOH went up massively. I am skeptical that the +180.4% YoY Q4 increase in console supply didn't come at an increased cost to Sony in order to secure that much hardware. That would go a long way towards partially explaining why their operating income went down so massively in Q4 and to a slightly lesser extent for FY ending Mar. 2023 (FY 2022 for Sony) as well.

Since learing PSVR2 is reportedly $250 BOM, there's a good margin there for retailers to want to stock. So bundles seem a good idea in the long run.

Ps Pro timeline rumor

Whilst we cannot report on any more specifics at this time, we understand that the first dev kit prototypes will be going to 1st party developers within the next couple of months, with 3rd party developers receiving them by the end of the year.

So, we're moving right into rolling generations from it looks like with a sort of old time Intel tick-tock cadence.

Tick - Hardware with new features (new "generation")
Tock - Faster hardware (mid "generation")
Tick - Hardware with new features (new "generation")
Tock - Faster hardware (mid "generation")
etc.

It would be interesting if MS chose to ignore the "Pro" type moniker and just do like Intel did and call each one a new generation.

If Series console sales don't improve (more specifically, Series X), I don't see how an additional and more expensive sku will improve their situation. Unless, they're depending on current Series X users to upgrade in the future.

So redgaming are saying pro and series XL are not happening. Tom Henderson saying it is happening.

Who to believe 🤔

Rdna 3 and 3.5 are a flop we might see rdna 4 based devices and in that time frame they may both have access to new zen chips with xillian ip in them. Will make for much better experiances on both sides. Of course we might not see another xbox console

It's almost like you could make this stuff up and have a 50/50 chance of being right
Yep. The con is plain as day. Two idiots corroborate each other's claims of something existing, but end up having differing opinions conveniently covering both cases where it either comes to fruition or not. Whatever ends up happening, they can look to the other person and say "you were right... things must have changed from when I heard about it".. which then adds to the illusion that they have actual sources and are in the know about this information since they both still "heard about it."

For a mid gen console simply having a larger gpu on the new node is probably enough. That's mostly what PS4 Pro was.

Sure if that is also what your competition does. However if RDNA 4 is a large departure or Zen 5 is a large departure and your competition has it and you don't it can be very problematic. Esp with RDNA 3's weakness of ray tracing. Not only that but you also might be getting stuck even further behind on the pc side as more and more games go Raytracing.
