Playstation 5 [PS5] [Release November 12 2020]

The DRM was optional. It was inherent to the medium. The same is true of AAC.
It was Sony's proprietary format, the only one they sold, and they sold it with DRM enabled meaning the files couldn't be shared across devices. I had a Sony Walkman, bought one album off Connect, and lost it when Sony closed the store. Well, it's probably still on my Walkman who's battery is likely dead. But I can listen for free on Spotify anyways.

I dunno what this line of discussion is heading towards or what spawned it. ;) Does it relate to PS5 at all?

DRM is indeed a content/store thing. I presume Sony decided to implement a standardised DRM unlike for example what exists with MP3s, which is a format that supports DRM but where there are many incompatible schemes. I think we got here because of an assertion that Sony create storage mediums to push their DRM, but I don't think they ever have. You expect them to be interested in DRM though given their music and movie arms.

As of now, I still think we're going from PS5 (and likely a PS5 Slim) directly to a PS6 in 2027/2028, without a md gen Pro model this generation.

several cases have shown that the PS5’s “seal” between the APU and its cooler can sometimes move or be damaged. When that is the case, if your PS5 sits horizontally, the liquid metal will stay flat and keep most of its thermal properties to help cool the PS5. But if your PS5 is vertical and “something” bad happens to the seal, then there is a risk the liquid metal will progressively fall down, becoming uneven, impacting its cooling ability and possibly reach components it shouldn’t.
there have been several cases of the liquid metal spilling on other parts of the motherboard, and actually killing the machine, even in consoles that have simply been sitting in their box, unopened. Liquid Metal is highly conductive, and if it touches the wrong components on the motherboard, it could lead to a short circuit.

knowing my luck with electronics, if i have a PS5, probably i would get the one with a defective seal, and it short circuited 1 day after 1-year warranty ends.

now need to keep in mind to put PS5 in horizontal position when i finally bought one.

btw does LM really needed? IIRC someone tried replacing it with thermal paste and the PS5 didnt overheats, right?

It's an interesting reminder that liquid is impacted by gravity, but it will take huge numbers of failures for me to decide to re-orientate mine. Severals cases over two years from launch on what is now 30m units sold? If this happens to you, you have been extraordinarily unlucky.

yep! i dont expect most people will encounter this for eons, even after PS6 or something got released.

but for me, if i have a ps5, i fully expect myself to encounter this, and will happen right after the warranty ends.

I suspect it’s largely a defect in the seal for affected units which don’t seem to be many so far.

It's also a risk when Liquid Metal is used in any PC in any type of tower arrangement, which is most gaming systems because the CPU will never be flat, but at a 90 degree angle. But not different really to putting a tank of water in your PC!

Finally disassembled my dualsense because neighbors blasting loud music and hammering stuff, making me unable to record me reviewing boox Leaf2 .

1. The drift seems to be caused by leaking lubes
2. The stick does feel sticky, maybe due to not enough lubes, because it was leaking
3. Lubing the stick with cvt transmission oil and cleaning up the sensor fixed everything

Now I just need to assemble everything again. So many flex cables and clips....

EDIT:
lol just my luck

after i've assambled everything, i cleaned it with alcohol and tissue, and now the rubber on the stick is peeled off. it was simply melting.

to add salt to the injury, now pressing "down" drifts to the left a little bit. maybe the lube starts leaking again. it didnt affect games (yet) tho.

CVT oil? It might damage plastics/rubber and it probably isn't good for you either.

For other game sticks people often suggest food grade silicone based grease.

Alcohol can dissolve some rubberized coatings too.

Its the only oil I got. It does have lots of warning labels.
