Playstation 5 [PS5] [Release November 12 2020]

So, you can't use any "off the shelf" drives as replacements on 25xx models? Or does the system somehow bypass the logic board on any "off the shelf" drive?

Regardless of whether you can or can't at least it makes it easier to replace a faulty drive, so Sony can be commended for that.

Regards,
SB
There may be an off the shelf drive that works if you plug the ribbon cables directly from the laser, spindle motor, and corkscrew motor directly into the motherboard. I would imagine that you would need longer ribbon cables than the ones that come with such a drive. But again, I've never seen the internal disc feeder like the ones on PS3 drives in non-playstation drives. To my knowledge they are custom. Swapping the drive is easier on the later systems, but it isn't like you can grab any old bluray drive from a PC parts shop and have it work.

Still not widely available after over 2 years./

Have to look for invitation at Amazon.

Had a chance a couple of months ago but have lost interest.

Hell they should have a new design by next winter right?

But no real incentive to reduce prices if they can't ship enough in volume.

I’m in the US and Amazon / BestBuy still require reservations. Wild.
Weird, Sony need to examine where they are routing stock too. PS5 has been readily available in the UK for the best part of two months. I've just checked and it's available on Amazon, GAME and Currys - all big retailers here.

Yup, I just checked Amazon and Best Buy before posting that.

I was following Twitter accounts which track stock or availability.

Got some notifications a couple of weeks ago, now nothing.

Might as well see what PS5 Pro will look like at this point.

This sounds like a ruse to 'empower' people to be able to pay more for stuff. Wow.
Not if you look at the numbers.

It's $15 for 1 year of Pro.
You get a $10 Gift Card at the start.
You get $5 Gift Card Monthly (must be used that month).
You earn 2% as points back.

So it costs you $15 for 1 year but you get back that $15 within 1 month. The other 11 months are bonuses.

This is where they get you. I doubt you can buy much for $5 so in order to receive that 'value' and "save" you have to spend every month. I'm sure it works for some, but these schemes are designed so that overall, it benefits the scheme operator than everybody in the customer base.

You can use the $5 to knock off even more from the already Pro discounted whatever. If you buy a lot of gaming merchandise (they do all sorts) and games it seems like an ok arrangement.

I just go to see what's on clearance. They were doing 50% off all clearance this month. Stocked up on those forgotten PSVR games and an Aim controller bundle. Doom3 VR was 50 cents lol.

You could use the online $5 credit towards a $10 Xbox Gift Cards so roughly 50% off. They may have adjusted this since I had Pro.

The real "gotcha" is when they were only selling consoles as bundles, like even worse than the forced GT7 or H:FW bundles, anywhere from an extra $100 to $500 added on for secondary controller, a few more games, and sometimes a wireless headset.

Can you apply the gift card and monthly points toward the console purchase?

That may depend on when you become a PRO member and when you get the console. I don't know how many consoles they have in stock, like if you could sign up for Pro and get a console the same day. Things looked vastly different over 18 months ago, where you had to signup for PRO and then go through hell online to try to get in the order queue when they put up inventory or try venturing out to the local store.

I used my initial Pro points for a $15 discount on top of the $40 sales-price of a controller, knocking it down to $25.

Wait, they had a wireless headset, games and an extea controller for only an additional $100?

No.

Their bundles had various items added.

Those bundles were anywhere from (MSRP + $100) to (MSRP + $500).

I think 2023 they will have redesigned slim esque model. They are trying to increase stock while also lowering cost to themselves so they have incentive. No real reason to make pro as of now though for this gen

It'll be interesting to see what kind of power consumption they'll need to go up to to make a substantial performance jump with a Pro model.
