Playstation 5 [PS5] [Release November 12 2020]

regardings to updates, does PS5 "just work" like xbox or its still like PS4?

for example, gran turismo 7 needs 100+ GB free space for a 2GB update, and to download 2GB update, the PS4 need to finish "preparing for update" first. then it "copy" the update, and then it "Apply" the update.

if PS5 no longer have any of those update headache (and not just hiding those behind a less detailed progress status, but genuinely just download. no need double space. download = installed), if it got a nice discount in december (and its not out of stock again), i may grab one... instead of waiting after PSVR2 released

We talked about the update behavior before so a search might be helpful. PS5 updates PS4 games just as PS4 did and it can still take ages.

I have not experienced a slow PS5 game update yet. But I haven't played very many PS5 native games.

So Sony have developed... a cable? Genius. And they say innovation is dead. :nope:

This is for reducing the manufacturing cost. They will really only have one model to manufacture and it will be much easier for people wanted a digital version to be able to find one.

EDIT: It will be easier for Sony to "repair" a PS5 with a BR defect and easier for the user to replace a PS5 with a BR drive not working and not under warranty. They just need to buy a new BR Drive.

Uh.. Would it work for windows/Linux too? It'll be great to have 1 external BluRay drive that can work across devices.

Btw this news basically confirms "PS5 slim" release right? Surely the new model will be slimmer, reducing logistics cost for Sony

They caught up to the xbox 360 and its HD-DVD drive or the turbo graphics 16 with cd drive (ws that the first cd add on? )

Anyway I think its a smart way of adding functionality to the device without having to make compromises in the console design. I have a feeling this is the way forward for all these companies. I can only imagine how small the series x would be without the drive

Sounds like a neccesary step to making a PS5 slim. Reduce manufacturing cost and slim line the machine at all cost imo.

When I buy a PS5 I don't want to worry about losing access to my PS4 disc games. I was too short sighted, disc rot is a real thing and I wish I had bought everything digitally now

I am positive I don't want my only source of games being that Sony store.

I have never seen an optical disc corrode. Is there an era where that was a problem? PS1 or DC maybe?

Sometimes my British humour becomes lost in text posts. I clearly see the benefits of this approach, it makes sense to have a uniform console and an optional buy-now-or-buy-later-or-never-buy optical drive for games and media. It will massively simplify so much and it is surprising that this wasn't the design from day one. It's not like Sony were hamstrung by available technology to link an external optical drive to a console.

And an interesting question is will existing external drives work with this PS5? And will Sony prevent its drive working with other platforms.

To be fair, when it comes to drives, Sony have embraced standard drives and USB devices since the PS3. So.. maybe.
