Old Discussion Thread for all 3 motion controllers

It's probably up to MS to choose. Sony Blu-ray folks have said that they welcomed Microsoft to use Blu-ray on 360. They claimed that SCE has no say in the decision. However, if Microsoft is keen, they probably prefer someone else (like Samsung, Toshiba or LG).

From the USA Today article we get a few snippets of the some of the other non-gaming uses...

USA Today said:
Kinect's built-in camera and microphone (due later this year, no price set) uses facial and voice recognition to let you, for instance, log onto Xbox Live, start games and pause movies. And a new menu lets you choose games or services such as Netflix by simply reaching out and pointing toward the screen selection. Video chat lets Xbox 360 homes connect; the smart camera widens when another person enters the room.

Sounds pretty cool. Hopefully the pricing rumors ($189 for the most expensive one) are wrong. There's no way I'm paying $189 for that. Would pay $100 with some games.

The logo fonts!

It does have 6 letters - it hasn't been confirmed though?

Kinect's a bit geeky for me, it sounds like something techy that would appeal to the hardcore. Unlike Move or Wii, which sound more universal.
Is a terrible pun on 'connect' as well.

If that is the name, then clearly Move has the best name of the three.
I'm still hoping MS has a better name though.

I'm excited now though, how many hours til MS's press conference starts?
What could be the bigger than Natal announcment? Slim 360 probably but that's not really a surprise.

Kinect Adventures: This is the one with the river rafting game that includes a time trial and obstacle course, playable by up to four players. On the raft, playing as a duo, you and a partner must lean one way or another to steer. Jumping helps the raft reach special areas for extra points.

What happened to Natal only supporting 2 players? I hope that's true though

It's not confirmed by Microsoft, but the USA Today article & the Italian Flash ad from Microsoft's own servers pretty much confirms it. BTW, the USA Today article has been removed too.

Yeah, I saw all the info, I don't like Kinect much, but it's better than Natal or Oculus.

So then I assume the four player support is also true? I thought they downgraded the Natal spec to only two players.

I'm not sure what to expect now. However, my gut feeling is that Natal will only track 2 players at a time. The system itself has always allowed 4 players to play. So I don't see that changing, but I only see 2 players allowed in full body motion controlled games. Maybe they can do 4 players for simple motion games that don't require full body tracking? The 4-player quiz game show in the video at E3 last year could work easily since it's just tracking maybe faces, hands & voices.

Well, I can honestly say with that announced game line up, at this point in time, I'm just not interested. It has nothing to offer me right now. If Sony can't wow me, then Wii it is for another few years for my MC fix!

Kinect is official...

Im wondering if the new hardware rumours could be PS3D. Basically a beefed up PS3 that would play all 3D games at full res and without comprimises from the 2D version. Possibly also allowing higher res, better aa/af and higher framerates on 2D only games. Not a new console launch just a new high end PS3 sku. Doubt it will happen but i would buy one ;)
A PS3 with version 1.4 HDMI.
I too wish they'd announce a high end PS3, like the PSX experiment for PS2. Including digital TV tuner and a more "HiFi" design.

Official gameplay video...

The UI interaction with Zune video was way cool. Rafting game still looks good. Not interested in the track running or dancing.

That controlling of the movie part was pretty cool. I guess it recognizes specific gestures from a specific person? And I'm sure my 11 y o niece would like that rafting game, likely all 3 of those games shown. If the controls work well enough, I think MS could hit the family/casual target.

I guess the remote will be super handy for people who own dogs that like chewing up remotes (we use to have a Golden that was terrible about this. Destroyed every single TV remote in the house). Not exactly a $189 feature, though. Ooh! A less efficient, gesture-based novelty interface of unknown reliability!

The Lightsaber game sounds bad, too. Giant Bomb did a live stream post reveal tonight and said it had a very FMV game vibe. Like, totally on rails, simplistic gesture input. For the love of go, I hope there's a real deal, hardcore Lightsaber game in the works for PS Move, the platform literally built for just that game.

So what has been shown? (from the VG247 link):

- kid controlling Kameo (but not sure that will be a game)
- 'a driving game' (not sure if this will be a real game)
- controlling avaters (this is confirmed, probably the 'send animated avatar message' )
- reading a book using hand motions (? not confirmed yet as an actual app)
- raft game (confirmed)
- mine kart game (a la Indiana Jones) in which you collect balls by jumping over things, and ducking under things (not sure if this all belongs together, but I'm guessing)
- kart style racer (could be the driving game above) with all the usual trappings including four player, boosting, ramps, shortcuts, stunts, uses the xbox live avatars
- some kind of disney game (or, maybe more likely, the kart game is made by disney?)
- star wars game with light sabre, force powers and darth vader
- a yoga style game (as was reported before)
- a sports style game, with hurdles, javelin, bowling, beach volleyball, soccer (which is presumably just penalties? including goalie stuff) and running
- interface with the social apps (Twitter)
- select movies (and browse forward as shown in the new microsoft trailer)
- kinectimals (shown at least four different large cats that the player can interface with)
- dancing game for up to three players
- support for video chat interfacing with the Kinect
- uses a glowing ball cursor that can be moved around, as general selection cursor in general, also for selecting apps (sounds like a good idea)

So then I assume the four player support is also true? I thought they downgraded the Natal spec to only two players.

What I'm thinking is it's limited by the range of motions a game is developed for. Full range of motion side to side will most likely limit it to 2 people. Take 2 adults with arms outstrethed and then say a half a meter distance between them. With arms flailing and jumping, you probably wouldn't want to be closer than that to each other.

That would pretty much fill the camera's field of view I would imagine.

Games that can be played sitting on the sofa on the other hand could probably easily fit 4 people into the camera's FOV.

Or say the Kinetimals game where you play with animals. It would probably be able to see 4 people sitting on the floor or whatever.

Anyway, I imagine the player limit is due to FOV restrictions rather than hardware restrictions.

Oh and the Rafting game looks like something right out of Tokyo Friend Park TV game show here in Japan. Except with better graphics and no harnesses or contraptions on the players. :D I can already imagine the producers of Tokyo Friend Park possibly investigating incorporating this into their show. :D

Or perhaps approaching MS to make a Tokyo Friend Park game.

Regards,
SB

seems my fears have been realised about Natal by just watching the USA today video (http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid30317506001?bctid=91411807001) watch as the game shows the girl jump 3 times yet she only jumps once :(

WRT the 'hand controls' as pointed out, it's pretty pointless and in the video the guy doesn't seem overly confident with just ff the video (and notice he's sitting central so how limiting is the response?)

So much for serious gaming with this unless MS have more to show?
