Why they have to be separate motherboards? It would just be two different lines, one that gets the particular flash chip soldered and one that does not.

:?:

To me that would be seperate motherboards. A seperate line requires additional resources. Which in my mind means additional cost. Doesn't makes sense to me that they would want to complicate things. Remember what Sony did with the 20gb?

Why would you need a seperate line? You simply have all the motherboards get assembled in the same line where some lots of boards have the flash chip soldered on and some lots run through the same line without being soldered.

The PS3 20gb was probably cheaper to produce then the PS3 60gb, but the cost difference wasn't large enough to warrant a $100 cheaper price point.

Alstrong, mentioned the seperate lines. I'll admit I'm ignorant of manufacturing. If it's as simple as you suggest, then that's no sweat off my back. ;)

Understood.

To get this back to an NPD thread, and remind us that Nov NPD release is Dec 11, vgchartz November NPD "preview" is up.

While chartz numbers have been discussed to death as innacurate, they give us some idea of the magnitudes we're dealing with here. Some of what they expect:

Hardware:
1.6m Wii
853k 360
395k PS3

That's of course a staggering Wii number. Consider typically Xbox does 500k in Nov and 1-1.2m in Dec.

Nice 360 number, would be a record for any Xbox November, and beat last years 770k following Halo 3.

Ps3 did 466k last Nov, so that would actually be a YoY fall if it holds up.

Software:

2.3 m Gears 2
1.6m COD WaW 360
671k WaW PS3
408k Resistance 2
355k Left 4 Dead

Interesting that COD apparently beat Resistance on PS3.

COD, even the Treyarch incarnation, is incredibly popular for what is imo a terrible single player game for years now...

Decent, not gangbuster L4D sales to my mind (if they hold up).

800,000 Wii over Black Friday...wow, is a word that comes to mind!

The Wii is trending towards a 150 million - 200 million install base by the end of its lifetime yet there is still little movement from the 3rd party developers and publishers (beside a few including Sega) on how they're going to take advantage of this massive opportunity.

Its like they've been raped by the Wii and they're still in shock about what to do :/

(personally I don't really care because I'll own all the consoles when its over and done with....but its kinda funny sitting on the sidelines)

Dude, that's because casuals won't buy the next Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Metal Gear, Gears of War or even Zelda. There is only a false opportunity as sales have shown. Third party "core" games suck crap on the Wii in terms of sales.

And it's good that way. The Wii is a toy. Not a games machine.

obviously..... it has nearly become a self fulfilling prophecy.....

3rd party games don't sell.... why even bother?

I don't know if B3d-ers know about an australian show called The Gruen Transfer. Its basically a show about advertising and has an interesting segment where they get competing ad agencies to think up a marketing campaign about "hard to sell ideas"

eg: Whale meat for human consumption, Bring back plastic bags etc.

This is how one company chose to advertise Whale meat

absolutely brilliant........ it shows that with proper marketing you can sell anything to anyone.

Obviously Nintendo is partly to blame here..... they have had a love hate relationship with developers since the NES........ but to merely dismiss the Wii as a casual kiddy console is a lost opportunity imo.

The whole "third party games don't sell on Wii" has been dispelled by Nintendo. Sure, the availability and sales of third party gamer's games might not be all that, but there's tons of shovelware with legs enough that they're bound to be profitable. Apart from the Nintendo exclusives, the former kind of games will always be both better and better selling on the competing platforms so people hanging around places like this are bound not to neither notice nor care when the occasional exception shoes up, though.

As an example, I think I read somewhere that the Wii version of Bully were looking towards pushing 500K which isn't too shabby. Rockstar probably turned a dime on that. As the userbase continues to grow, I'm sure we'll see more such decent efforts turning in decent performances, just not any new IP or exclusives.

If so, I'm sure Home and NPD combined will kill GAF for a bit :D

2 Million Wii sold ... in November. This is wat is killing GAF a bit. *gasp* Back up now though. 0.836 or so 360s and 0.378 PS3s ... DS also 1.5 mill, and PSP 0.426 mill. Amazing numbers all round for November, I have to say! But that Wii, oh my.
