NPD Nov. You know you want it!

Why the bleep would somebody buy a PS3 for *PS Eye*? To stare at himself on the TV screen? I can understand "Singstar + PS Eye" or something like that, but PS Eye by itself?

Argh... he came to me confirming that PS3 is a good purchase for him (although he's also considering Wii). He cited Blu-ray movies and kid games. When he saw my PS Eye and Operation: Creature Feature. He made his decision right there.

I haven't even told him about Eye of Judgment and SingStar + PS Eye integration yet. He still doesn't know. :)

BR movies aren't selling that well, AFAIK they still haven't reached a 1:1 attach ratio with the PS3...

Do they need to achieve 1 : 1 attach ratio for PS3 now ? Most PS3 owners are buying it for games. As long as the growth matches their expectation, they should be happy.

Ahh...VGchartz is made-up stuff. Never knew. In fact, never heard of them before now :)

Well his claimed source is some people that work in retail outlets or something. He calls up the managers or employees at a few stores or something and extrapolates numbers. He posts numbers and then constantly fudges the data around NPD releases.

So are PS3 owners buying the console for games or for movies? some of you say A and some of you say B, make up your mind please :)

The cold truth is a lot of people are like me.

I own 3 PS3 games only (Resistance, Motorstorm, Folklore), 1 bluray movie. But I've rented a TON of Bluray movies via zip.ca. ;)

Blu-Ray movies are outselling HD-DVD.

Combined, I thought I read somewhere that their volumes are a few percent of DVD sales, which are actually declining.

They should be. One Buy one Get one free sales after another will certainly help! I know I got most of mine that way. Add that to a much larger install base, it'd be down right scary if that wasn't the case, right? Hi Def media isn't even close to putting a noticeable dent on DVD:

"TRANSFORMERS, is the year’s top-selling week one DVD with North American sales reaching 8.3 million units since the title’s debut on October 16, it was announced today by Paramount Home Entertainment. The biggest original film of the year from director Michael Bay and executive producer Steven Spielberg, in association with Hasbro, Inc., is also the best-selling DVD day one for the year with over 4.5 million units sold on Tuesday. Additionally, the smash hit has exploded into the high definition market, selling over 100,000 HD DVDs its first day of release, rocketing past previous releases to become the best-selling day one high definition title on either format since their inceptions. TRANSFORMERS has sold over 190,000 HD DVDs in its first week making it the fastest and best-selling week one release on either high definition format as well as the best selling HD DVD ever. The TRANSFORMERS DVD is also the top-selling October DVD release in the history of the home entertainment industry."

Having said that this is a GAMES thread. Let's move the BR/HD DVD to that section.

I have about 10 or 11 PS3 games (4 of which I've still not played:)) and 6 blu-ray movies with blu-ray rentals for anything netflix has :)

Did you buy the PS3 for the purpose of playing moveis though or was it something that occured later on?

I think Sony actually had that market with the PS2. Most of the Wiis are replacing those old Playstations IMHO. Even the most successful mainstream games, GTA3 and GT4, haven't reached more then 10% of the user base, so a lot of people had to be buying casual stuff for that console as well.
True, but I was actually taking about Sony targetting the same market to buy more Sony hardware. Whether it's in the form of a new console or just an add-on for PS2, Sony missed out on a big opportunity.

It could even allow Sony to delay the PS3 and put hardware in it that clearly distinguishes itself from XB360.

In NA, not "few percent", but 1%. Probably way less than this outside of NA.

I thought I'd play both games and movies, but I simply don't care about most of the games (R&C, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, etc).

Heh. According to the last survey I saw, 10-20% uses PS3 for Blu-ray movies only.

On this forum, you can find user posts that talk about the number of movies/PS3 games they own somewhere. Many have more games than Blu-ray movies. RobertR1, Asher and 1 or 2 more posters mentioned they have more movies than games (or movies only).

The Wii hardware sales just continue to amaze now the software sales are coming.

The 360 was meh I was expecting 900k or so not much better than last year. 360 software sales well as usual are amazing. They found almost 300k people to buy a 169 dollar game wow.

PS3 with a price drop/new model 2 exclusive AAA games and a new marketing campain could not even reach what the 360 did last year. Very good CoD4 and AC sales for the PS3 but the rest of the software sales was horrible. I can only imagine what the reaction has to be at sony HQ.

December NPD could be very fun. If nintendo does now get Wii supplies up we could see the 360 come in #1. Can sony stay with in a half a million of the 360 and Wii.
