1.9m xbox 360s

kinect sports apparently made top 10, but I assume that's a platform specific value.

Ah, and Nintendo makes its anticipated large impact on the prime holiday month. Hard to make many comments with titles being consolidated and no number though. Hopefully we'll get some numbers soon.

[edit] Kinect sports being top 10 might be when you don't consolidate numbers.

Overall

"We estimate that the total consumer spend on games content to be between $15.4B and $15.6B for 2010, which is about flat to last year. This year, declines in portable and console game sales were offset by new physical PC game sales, which increased by 3%, and increases in the consumer spend occuring via digital download, mobile gaming apps, social network games, and used games. We will issue our final analysis of the total consumer spend on the industry in March when we release our 2010 edition of the Games Industry Total Consumer Spend report."

"Sales of new physical video game hardware, software & accessories ended 2010 at $18.6B, a 6% decrease from 2009. If we include PC game sales, which enjoyed an increase of 3% versus '09, sales hit $19.3B, down 5% from '09. Aside from PC games, accessory sales were up over 13% due to an increase in the average retail price of accessory items of 20%. "

"Among new physical video game sales in December 2010, the Wii and the 360 platforms generated the greatest dollar sales of all platforms, at 32% and 31% of dollar sales respectively, across all categories including hardware, software and accessories."

Hardware

"In 2010, the Xbox 360 platform was the only system to enjoy a year-over-year increase in unit sales over 2009. December 2010 is the best month ever for Xbox 360 hardware sales."

"For the month of December, the Nintendo DS was the best-selling hardware system, achieving an install base of over 47 million units sold in the U.S., which now surpasses that of the PS2."

Software

"The best-selling game for the month, and for the year, was Call of Duty: Black Ops. Year-to-date it has sold more than 12 million units across all platforms, which is more than twice as many as the second best-selling title of the year, Madden NFL '11. This might lead some to think the industry is becoming more hit-driven with sales more concentrated among the top titles, but in fact, sales of the top 10 titles this year represented about the same percentage of total unit sales as they did last year."

"The top five games of the year are Call of Duty: Black Ops, Madden NFL '11, Halo: Reach, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Red Dead Redemption."

"On an SKU basis, games that are in the top 10 for the month that aren't reflected in our title-level best-selling list include Kinect Sports from Microsoft, UDraw Studio with UDraw Tablet from THQ, and Dance Central from Microsoft. Outside of Black Ops and Assassin’s Creed, the top list on both a SKU and title level basis reflects an array of content that is appealing outside the core audience for gaming that you might expect to sell well during the holiday timeframe."

"PC game dollar sales were up 62% in December led by sales of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm expansion pack. For 2010 new physical PC game sales, Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty and World of Warcraft: Cataclysm are the best-selling games, representing 14% of total pc game unit sales for the year."

"Among the top 10 titles for the month, two are third-party Wii games including Just Dance 2 from Ubisoft, which was the best-selling game for the month at the SKU level, and Epic Mickey from Disney."

Accessories

"December 2010 is the biggest month for accessories sales in history, due to a hefty increase in the average retail price driven by specialty controllers.

"The Kinect was the best-selling accessory item for the second month in a row, following its release in early November."

"For both the month of December and for the whole year, Point & Subscription cards grew the most in unit volume vs. 2009. This is a retail reflection of the growing importance of digitally delivered gaming content."

So Dance Central and Kinect Sports are both in the top 10 for individual SKU's. That's awesome! Great news for Rare and Harmonix.

Wii - 2.36 million

360 - 1.86 million

Didn't the Wii (could google but too lazy ;)) do something close to 4m units this time last year? If so, 2.36m is something of a comedown.

Also, while the 360 number is an impressive uplift, I'd guess that MS was hoping to sell considerably more. In fact, I'd guess they were looking at the Wii's 2009 December with envious eyes and as a target to aim for.

yes I would of thought the xbox360 would of outsold the wii. (though not according to amazon)

wii done 3810000 last year

Michael Jackson The Experience :)

With these sales 360 is 1.1 ahead for the year in USA+Japan, will be 1.4 or more including UK, but dont worry, Sony must have sold 5 million more in Europe and everywhere where coincidentally there are no sales numbers to verify, according to their ship numbers.

And rofl@3D0 sold more in Japan, yeah 2 vs 1.

Please, don't start this shit again. Sony cannot 'fudge' ship numbers, so please lay off the implications that they may be doing so. Yes, it's true that Sony ship to more markets than the 360 and Wii, and yes, this means that comparitively there are likely to be (globally) more PS3's sitting on store shelves than either 360's or Wii's, but those units are still "sold" by Sony, will have earned them revenue, and will be included in their ship numbers.... along with the units that have been sold to customers in those markets too.

Legitimately!

Official numbers released by Microsoft...

Microsoft said:
It’s Official: 2010 the Biggest Year in Xbox History

<snip>
  • Xbox 360 was the only console to show year-over-year growth at 42 percent, making it the fastest-growing console in 2010.
  • With $6.2 billion spent at retail, more money was spent on Xbox 360 than any current generation console in 2010.
  • December Xbox 360 console sales remained strong, with 1.9 million units sold, our biggest month ever in the history of Xbox 360.
  • During December, three of the top 10 console game titles were for Xbox 360, including “Call of Duty: Black Ops,” “Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood” and “Kinect Sports.”

So Dance Central and Kinect Sports are both in the top 10 for individual SKU's. That's awesome! Great news for Rare and Harmonix.

Pretty impressive for titles selling to a rather more limited install base. But with limited titles due to launch there's not a lot of choice to draw potential buyers hither and yon. Still pretty damn impressive.

As to the quote.

Dang, 63% of total non-digital video gaming dollars were spent on the Wii platform and the X360 platform. That doesn't leave much for DS, PS3, PC (although physical probably represents only half of total revenue at most), PSP and PS2 (wow, was Madden NFL 11 and NBA 2k11 seriously released on PS2? :D).

1.9 million X360 hardware units sold in December owing a lot to Kinect topping the accessory charts for the second month in a row. It's possible without Kinect, X360 may not have had a YoY increase. I'd imagine that 149 USD price point for Kinect had a significant impact on drive up ASP of accessories. :)

Wii down YoY as I expected, but down further than I expected it would be. I was expecting them to at least hit 3 million units, but not even close. Still it was a very good December for them with ~1/3 of all physical video gaming dollars.

I'm wondering if PS3 will have anything positive to pull from December. GT5 didn't make the top 10 in the SKU charts, it should have at least made the top 20 however. Hopefully PS Move had solid sales. As well, hopefully PS3 sold at least a million units.

From this...

MS reports that its the only console up YoY. This leaves PS3 at less than 1.21m for december.

To this...

Uh no. At least reading the data release.

Followed by this...

What the hell are you talking bout? I suppose I should have said less than or equal to. It couldn't have been more than 1.21 million without showing yoy growth and it wasn't.

And finally this...

You better take that up with your 2nd grade maths teacher mate ;)

It wasnt the same as the MS pr's one
1.9million = 1.86, they should of just called it 2million what 1.14 between friends, if youre gonna round might as well go the whole hog
last month it was
1.4million = 1.37

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/...0_Industry_Down_9_For_December_5_For_Year.php
black ops sold over 12million

Ummm, that last reply doesn't exactly fit the conversation chain. They weren't arguing about the exact number of units MS sold.

Assurdum was either saying X360 didn't have a YoY increase or wasn't the only one with a YoY increase. Or he was saying PS3 did not sell less than 1.21 million.

To which obviously the first part can't be true as X360 did actually have a YoY increase and was the only one that had one. Thus Alphawolf replying that, OK, it's technically possible that PS3 could have sold exactly as many units Dec. '10 as it did Dec. '09. :)

While he may or may not want to take that up with his 2nd grade math teacher, you may want to revisit your 2nd grade English comprehension teacher. ;) (said in Jest, don't take it as a flame :)).

Sometimes PR guys really have to earn their dollars when putting a positive spin on a potentially less than positive situation. However, That said, talking about review scores for a January game that's not even in stores yet as one of the two key highlights while discussing the December 2010 NPD shows some real balls ;)

Top PlayStation Highlights
- PS3 was only console to have 32% increase in software sales YOY.
- LittleBigPlanet 2 currently has a Metacritic score of 94, which makes it one of the Top 10 PS3 games of all times.

SCEA

Since PlayStation Move was introduced in September, millions of consumers and gamers have joined the PlayStation family. The key to Move's long-term success is developer and publisher support; enabling PlayStation to offer the most diverse line up of motion and 3D games. The combination of innovative hardware and a relentless line up of blockbuster titles is why the PS3 is perhaps the only console that grows more valuable over time. As we come out of the gates in 2011, PlayStation is brimming with new games to whet the appetite for all gamers, like next week's highly anticipated launch of LittleBigPlanet 2, which received top scores. And right around the corner, Killzone 3 is positioned to set a new standard in hardcore gaming as the first AAA title to utilize both 3D and Move functionality. According to the December NPD, PlayStation is the only console company to show year over year software growth with an impressive 32% increase in its sales. Since launching four months ago, PlayStation Move has introduced 50 supported titles, with close to 20 titles still on the horizon, underscoring PlayStation's steady expansion of software titles to create what is without doubt the most exciting line-up of motion control gaming options available to consumers today. We look forward to the year ahead as we continue to deliver the kind of compelling, innovative and diverse content experiences that have kept the PlayStation brand synonymous with premier entertainment for over 15 years.
