But I am still waiting for pics from the real prototype...

You know something we don't? :)

Just to clarify: Actual hands-on prototypes. These are just rendered (?) pics, which tend to look a little different from the real deal...

I appreciate the effort (certainly over the Cube's design which was "cute and compact" but rather uninspired and toy-like), but I have to agree with the general thrust of Joe's comments here. Just looking like a glossy DVD drive doesn't quite cut it. It needs at least ONE more unique detail to really give it some distinction.

And no, I don't believe it needs to be "curvy" to be "sleek" either. But it needs some distinction. Myself, I'd have been intrigued if it kept the sharp corners but designed the case as more of an angular parallelogram than a straight-up rectangle. Or alternatively, lit up the interior with the same light you see peeking out the rom drive, and had the lines you see on the case edges be transparent or semi-transparent to let it seep through. Give it a bit of an electric/futuristic feel without it having to be enormous, curvalicious, or have a peculiar distinction.

It WOULD like to see them push something more than "normal, but glossy!" though.

Yeah they could've added thin transparent acryilic pieces where the lines run around the side panels would be cool with a couple extra LEDs to light it. The side edges would look better if they were slighly beveled like the bottom front. It's still a sleek design nonetheless just not too unique.

They should also make it flush with the base. So I can lay it on its side. Do you think the base is the powerunit?

I agree it could always look better, so could PS3 and 360, but it definitely still looks really nice AFAICS, its simple and sleek and I love the blue glow (that'll look lovely in a dark room :)).

All I'm concerned about now are specs, if they get the power right it can be a major system next gen IMO.

i think it looks very nice...

definately the best out of the three if you ask me... although the size has me worried. it is literally so tiny that it cannot possibly be able to pack anywhere near the hardware that sony or ms is packing without some "tardis" like space-time anomoly.

i know it's all about the games and revolutionary ways of playing them, but it'd be good to have some real grunt to back it up - especially after the rumoured leaked specs that actually made it appear more powerful than the x360.

let's just say that if this thing even approaches the capabilities of the other 2 i will bow down and worship the nintendo designers as true "gods of cramming"

or really distracting and annoying... i hate having brightly lit things in proximity to the screen you are tryign to watch. maybe that's just me!

You could lay it horizontally. You could see the bevel on the front face which would face downward when laid horizontally. You don't need the base when laid horizontal.

I have heard that XBox 360 and PS3 include a power supply inside the system, if that's correct then that can make up for some of the difference. The rest could be a super slim DVD drive and maybe lower clocked GPU/CPU with a PPU in there to assist along with that special NEC cooling system. But yeah I am a little worried about the specs. Though when you consider how big GC was compared to XBox that makes me feel a bit better :)

You just "don't get it", I guess. ;)

Depends how bright it is really. I doubt its going to be shinning bright, just a soft glow..

Looks ok.
Maybe a bit too plain and unimaginative for my taste.
It lacks that "something" that makes a minimalistic design a true classic instead of just a simple clean unobtrusive design, which this is imo.
A bit too much like a regular PC CD/DVD drive with glossier finish.
A bit too boring really.
Lacks that something that "grows on you".

Better than xbox360 and a close second to PS3. The small size of Revolution and the bulkierness of PS3 put them quite close to another.
If the Revolution were twise as big it wouldn't bee near as good looking anymore, but instead it'd look like a cheap dvd player.
The size does matter.

Liquid nitrogen cooling system and this might actually have better hardware than the other 2.

i can just see it now... lots of little kids freezing their hands off trying to refill their cooling sytem with the "nintendo approved" canisters of liquid nitrogen.

like i say, if they can pull of some seriously competative hardware in such a small box, they truly are miraculous wizards of packaging. not too long till we find out i guess!

personally, I wouldn't tradeoff size and sleekness for power. If Rev can manage to compete with XB360 and PS3 in total system power fine, but if they've sacrificed power to look cute, they've lost again.

What you don't know, is that they plan on fabricating it at 10nm.

P.S. that's the first time I have ever used a smilie on Beyond3D.
