Nintendo 3DS hardware thread

Would look more convincing if it were anywhere near the 3DS's resolution.

UnclySporky from GAF cooked this up for simulating 3DS resolution, complete with aliasing:

And it still looks stunning.

Still very impressive. You can tell at points it's still mildly low poly but the wonderful texture and shader work hides it well.

nobody leaked an update about how the PICA chip fares in perf per mm2 and perfs per Watts vs the competition?

Nope, and we still have absolutely no idea about what general processor is in there either. We're still stuck on the dual ARM11 @ 266MHz rumour.

I was watching the E3 2011 MGS 3d trailer and it was much less impressive than the fake trailer on launch. The capcom resident evil launch trailer was fake too then.

Digital Foundry has a new article up on MGS3DS mentioning a few things but nothing definitive.

Unless I read the wrong article, all it says is that the console is rendering at 800*240 and uses a PICA200 GPU.. All of that has been confirmed by Nintendo.

On the subject of UE3 on the 3DS, how is Capcom able to make their engine work? Does it look like Capcom had to sacrifice a lot for make MT Framework Mobile? Is it just more flexible (possibly less powerful thus work better with lower specs) than UE3?
I'm replying to an old post, but I was just reading over the thread. I'd say it's really a matter of 'politics'. You can get just about anything to work on lower end hardware if you want to.

MT Framework isn't the same as what you're getting on 360, PS3 and PC in terms of implementations, but they've managed to make the engine tools crossover as well as provide some 'similar' effects for the 3DS.

No idea about MGS3 on 3ds, but what I've seen so far on Resident Evil Revelations was pretty damn stunning. (makes most of Nintendo's own efforts look downright half-assed actually) I mean the early trailer was nothing more than a cut-scene with Chris and Jill in a pitch black room, and with a little lamp dangling from above. it seems to me that at least the Jill character model made the jump to actual gameplay pretty much intact. You also shouldn't forget that RE games look quite a bit better during cut-scenes in general. At least in RE5 the gap is rather obvious.

Do you two believe Street Fighter IV and Res Evil: Mercenaries only look a little bit better then PSP games?, serious question.

I own both a 3ds and a PSP (3000 - lovely screen on that thing), and while I can't really comment on RE: Mercenaries, I sure as hell can comment on Street Fighter IV.

Street Fighter IV has nice looking character models as long as you don't look too close. The texture resolution on the characters is horribly low res. The Stars And Stripes tattoo on Guile's arm is reduced to an almost uni-colored blotch on the 3ds. The static backgrounds fare even worse, with some seriously hideous floor textures and almost no actual geometry in the background on top of it all. The game gets a lot of mileage out of its art style, and the high polygon count and the normal mapping on the characters really makes them look solid and weighty despite the texture resolution. In 2d you also get some proper anti-aliasing along with the 60 fps. Nice depth of field effects during the pre-fight animations as well.

The game does quite a few things I haven't seen on the PSP, but it seems like a lot of detail was traded in for the sake of snazzier effects.
Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection on the PSP for example completely blows SFIV out of the water in terms of texture resolution and the tremendous looking backgrounds. It also runs at a higher base resolution and achieves 60 fps despite the the 222 Mhz clock speed of the PSP CPU. (it even has comparable loading times). The SFIV visuals are pretty much saved by its art style.

Next on: Ridge Racer. PSP wins this almost hands down. The 3ds version really hurts from the lower resolution (the colorful visuals and the long straights really make for some horrible aliasing here), the textures and the texture filtering on the cars is a joke, the framerate gets severely choppy on some tracks (even in 2d), lighting seems a bit weaker as well. The cars are a tad more detailed but that's as much as I will give that version. I was really disappointed with this game.

Next up: Dead or Alive Dimensions. Once again, Tekken DR compares very favorably here. DOA has some really nice looking stages, and some excellent textures here and there, but there are just as many stages that look no better than DoA 2 on the Dreamcast. Probably worse. (and no single stage in DoA is as pretty and detailed as Tekken's Snow Castle. Unlike some people claim, DoA D is a far cry from DoA3 on the old Xbox) The characters look nice during the pre-fight animations, but once the fights are going, very little of that detail remains (physics driven assets that are not boobs, like hair and skirts for example, look particularly bad). Sure, the Tekken fighters aren't quite as detailed during the actual fights either, but the very nice texture work remains intact. Hair and clothing looks a lot better as well. Once again, the higher resolution of the PSP screen helps more that you'd imagine. Having 30 pixels more vertical resolution goes quite a way when it comes to displaying character models.

Last but not least: Zelda. Nice looking game. Very charming visuals. Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep blows it completely out of the water, though.

honest enough?:D (there are quite a few gameplay clips)

Yeah. Looks painful to control, though. I still get RE night sweats! And I can't believe Nintendo omitted a second analog disc...

The smoke effect looks pretty good, but mostly the texture and geometry don't look much better than PSP games. Better lighting and some low res normal maps, though. Much better than RE: Mercenaries. That game was pretty ugly.

Capcom seems to be making much better use of the hardware than even Nintendo, though. When they showed footage of the Mario Kart, Mario and Luigi games at E3 my initial reaction was, "yup, looks like Nintendo has decided to get into PSP development.
