Next-Gen iPhone & iPhone Nano Speculation

iPhone 5's internet pre-order event in Taiwan sold ~400K units by some estimation (this is a three-day event). I got my order about 38 minutes after the event started (as the pre-order server was seriously congested), and have to wait for nearly six weeks to get my phone. So maybe they are really supply constrained.

They claimed in the earnings conference that they sold every unit they made and could have sold more.

I guess the market didn't buy this claim.

In any event, I don't see them putting one of their newest SOCs in a $99 product, especially since it would be overkill.

It's a test run.

So I forgot to note that S5L8945 is the 45nm A5X, S5L8947 is an A5XR2 of some kind, possibly die shrunk 32nm HK-MG Samsung or 28 TSMC (???)

Why they chose the A5X is anyone's guess.

I went to a Swisscom shop in Luzerne today -- BTW astonishing that TIM in economically stagnant Italy has a better mobile data network.

They had all the latest Android phones but not the iPhone 5. Just the iPhone 4 and 4S. Didn't ask but maybe they don't have them in stock? I've seen some iPhone 4 or 4s being carried around but also a lot of big screen Samsungs. I don't know if iPhone is that popular here. I know iPhone has lost a lot of ground in sales in Germany, France and Italy, mainly because of pricing. In Switzerland though, everything is expensive so maybe price-sensitivity isn't as big a factor?

Oh my, flat front and rounded edges, must be iPhone? Seriously, get a grip, just compare these two:

The HTC actually looks more like the BB Z10. It's also a rounded corners black rectangle with no physical buttons.

If you're trying to design a phone with a slim bezel to keep the dimensions in check (as is necessary for the newer phones with big screens), you really don't have much leeway in your design. Rounded corners or more square-ish corners? That's pretty much the only design choice for a phone with on-screen buttons, I'd have thought.

I just think it looks like the distinctive back of an iphone 5. .yea ok theres not much room to play around in, but I would be more willing to believe htc just randomly came up with this if it wasnt for the 8x apeing nokia lumia.

And that coming from someone who likes htc and may well switch to one from a samsung if they equip snapdragon 800 later on in the year...I think they kick started android and pretty much invented the uber powerfull phone...some innovative designs like the hero, desire, legend, and kickstands....loved them....

Im not sure why you continue parroting that old myth even though i disproved it in the nokia thread

HTC did not copy the Lumia, infact Nokia copied HTC if anything

This is HTC first unibody polycarbonate phone, it was announced in 2008. Nokia N9 showed up in 2011

Yes I havnt got amnesia. ..but that wasnt multicoloured, polycarbonate unibody design was it? They look too Similar in overall design, its uncanny.

Like I said I respect htc and their previous innovative designs...this isnt one if them.

Neither is this new "ultra pixels" whilst different to over sampling. ..its a similar idea..again pioneered by nokia.

The kickstands htc introduced which I loved..also appeared on nokia n96 first if I remember correctly.

Saying that after everyone and its dog copied nokias smartphone software innovations from symbian. .such as copy and paste, multitasking, memory mangement, app stores etc nokia did turn symbian into an android clone with belle.

Nokia is one of the few smartphone manufacturers trying to go there own way.

Uh yes it was a unibody polycarbonate, are you seriously trying to claim Nokia owns the colors red, blue and yellow now?

Dont be pedantic, but the whole idea behind the design philosophy of being loud and different to an iphone clone was clearly nokias.

Also nokia designed the n9 like a pillow shape and full screen no buttons..also the display had bezzled gorilla glass...something htc copied with the one x.

In the same way apple doesnt own the colour white or the letter "i" yet everyone and there dog has released products with the same philosophy and naming from smartphones to films.

Companies like humans in general look to see a successfull idea/direction then jump onto the bandwagon...the best ones invent the ideas/trends that everyone else follows.

Camera technology, gps, mapping solutions and gaming are just some of the other technologies nokia brought to smartphones...even if they didnt invent the technologies outright.

Edit also lumia 920 included a curved back...htc introduce a technically different..but visually similar idea on the 8x..stacking or what ever its called.

Feature phones that act like smartphones to hit poorer countries is another area nokia has focussed on...combining technologies such as dual SIM, proxy server web compacting...multitouch and gaming to its asha series..

Alas samsung is also having a crack at that...whether that is copying or not time will tell...samsung is a big enough innovative company to do its own thing...even if they blatantly aped the iphone.

Its pointless arguing this with you, you are the same guy claiming Lumia 620 was getting rave reviews and it turned out to be from a Nokia fansite

This is getting silly..I didnt link any review from a nokia site..and never stated that...I winked in jest when suggested...then clarified my opinion in a later post.

As said above I was referring to the many other genuine reviews floating around the web.

Come on get with it dude :)

Polycarbonate isn't much of an innovation, and HTC's shape/color with their early designs was quite different from Nokia's. It's pretty clear to most observers that the design philosophy of the 8X is ripped from Nokia's line. It doesn't warrant any lawsuits or compensation (which Nokia is unfortunately pursuing), but the aping is very clear. I think the look of the 8S is just as good while being distinct, so I don't see why HTC felt such a direction for the 8X was necessary.

It's all meaningless anyway, like trying to claim brownie points for starting a fashion trend.
