News & Rumors: Xbox One (codename Durango)

Nope, I've been informed that each of those three products are happening.

It just happens to match the rumours and speculation.

Market fragmentation hasn't affected Apple much, and look how many overlapping devices it has.

The rationale is:

Durango for people who want a next gen Xbox 360.

Xbox 361 for price sensitive consumers and emerging markets

Xbox TV for people who are cross shopping an Apple TV/Roku type device or who mainly use their 360's for streaming video/music

I wonder if they will drop the requirement of Xbox Live Gold on their Xbox TV product. They have a bunch of great apps but sticking them behind a pay wall doesn't seem competitive to cross-shoppers.

Yeah, I don't see how they can expect people to buy a Roku competitor with a $60/year fee attached, but if they drop Gold for that, how can they justify keeping all the media apps behind a paywall on the gaming consoles at the same time?

Yeah, I don't know how they're going to manage that, but I'm guessing that Xbox Silver will let you do more than it currently does but moving up to Gold brings other benefits and features, eg. Smartglass streaming from Durango to any device.

They solve it by having a separate Xbox Live tier for TV apps(hopefully cheaper) & then the 1st year is included free in the Xbox TV device. They will have to resubscribe after the 1st year. Gold tier gets the TV tier + everything else. I think the TV tier would have problems if it was just access to the apps, but with their ambitions of having their own original TV programming like Netflix I think that will be included with the TV tier. Basically Xbox TV will be another service like Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant & Red Box Instant.

Well, I have no information to the contrary so I won't dispute your claim, I just think it would be a mistake by MS to go this route.

Market fragmentation hasn't affected Apple much, and look how many overlapping devices it has.
MS isn't Apple, which windows RT proves quite vividly. Also, all apple iThings run the same OS and the same apps (well, except for the iPod nano), as is the case with all Macs too, so it's not really market fragmentation like MS is doing with three different devices that aren't interoperable.

The rationale is:
Yes, I understand the rationale, but I think it's a bad one. By keeping the 360 alive after launching durango they're undermining durango, and xbox TV is not an xbox if it doesn't run xbox games so it shouldn't be called xbox to begin with. They're diluting the strength of their brand by making a gimp device that is incompatible with their real consoles.

I understand & agree somewhat. The problem is they already diluted the strength of their Xbox brand when they dropped the Zune brand & then made every video, music & game service on Xbox 360, Windows Phone & Windows desktop simply "Xbox".

Truly surprising and inspiring words from Gamestop regarding the next Xbox. I wonder if we are missing something because their words are really unexpected taking into account what we have been hearing these last weeks regarding the Xbox.

Xbox 720 a 'very hot, compelling device' says GameStop

CEO Paul Raines says "the world is going to stand up and take notice" when Microsoft announces new machine.

GameStop CEO Paul Raines is optimistic about the still-unannounced Xbox 720. Speaking with Games Industry International, the executive said the platform will draw the attention of gamers worldwide when Microsoft decides to announce it.

"We've been spending a lot of time with Microsoft, but we have to let them take the lead on this, but it will be a very hot, compelling device," Raines said. "They are doing some really cool stuff, and I'm eager to hear them start their announcements because I think the world is going to stand up and take notice."

Raines is bullish on the vitality of consoles overall. He said negative sentiments about new platforms is not a new phenomenon for the upcoming console transition. In addition, he said internal data shows strong demand for the PlayStation 4 and noted this enthusiasm is likely to be matched for the Xbox 720.

"We don't subscribe to that. The cool thing with GameStop is, we've got a lot of gamers here and we've got a lot of people [on the team] who've seen every console cycle. And what's interesting to me - I was talking to one of our founders, and he was telling me every console cycle you get people who will say 'there will never be another console,' or 'what else can the consoles do?' And we just believe it's a cycle and we just haven't had a new product in so long. But we certainly don't believe that the new consoles won't be as exciting," Raines said. "There's a lot of demand for PS4, and I think there will be for the next Xbox as well, once it's announced."

GameStop shares this week climbed to a three-year high.

Microsoft is rumored to have its next-generation platform on store shelves this holiday season alongside the PS4. Though the company has yet to reveal its official plans, Microsoft is believed to hold a one-off media event this month to announce the Xbox 720.

PR fluff smells like PR fluff. Nothing new or revolutionary about that.

Gamestop wants to make a bundle selling these things so of course they're gonna hype 'em up at every chance they get. They could even have been paid off by MS to do so, it wouldn't surprise me the slightest.

Meh. What else could they possibly say? Regardless of if used games are blocked or not, it's what they're gonna get. It's the future. All gamestop can do is bend over and take it up the booty, unless they want to liquidate all assets and close up shop...

I think there has to be something more to it than just PR. All the PR in the world wouldn't be helping them if companies block pre-owned games sales and the sales of physical copies.

The value of their shares increased instead, which is too much of a coincidence if you ask me. Why? Something is cooking...

Sure there is a general feeling everywhere that they just want the next big thing, asap, because PS3 and 360 are dying, but if it's PR, then they are very good at it, because I don't remember them saying something similar on the PS4 or the WiiU before.

It doesn't put a stop to all that Xbox Infinity, NeXtbox, Durango speculation, because it is still Microsoft who should break the big news, but I believe it gives some hope that the negative rumours maybe aren't completely true. :)

Any chance for Xbox TV to stream games from your 720? So you could own one "server" 720, and have the smaller Xbox as a media and games extender?

Yup, Gamestop might have some kind of special relationship with MS for Durango and are drumming up hype.

Maybe they have some kind of licensing deal signed which would allow them (exclusively perhaps) to trade used games while giving a cut of the sale to MS/publishers.

They have lots of plans for incorporating Smartglass and streaming into Durango (I don't know specifics) so I definitely think that using the Xbox TV as a media/game extender is a real possibility.

yea they had to buy the PR, because it couldn't just be that they are both good systems based on what they know and they want to tell their customers and investors that they anticipate that it's going to be a good couple of coming years?

oh and agree, it sounds like blocking used games across the machine is now most likely a dead rumor.

They weren't drumming up nearly as much fanfare for PS4, so that might indicate some kind of special relationship with MS.

With used game blocking, the API is definitely there, it's up to the publishers to decide though (and i'm guessing most if not all will relish the opportunity to do so)
