They should have made it 1TB.

Really? Does anybody care? 1TB is just a marketing thing, it is totally meaningless in terms of useability.

As far as I can see, and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, one the major (and it's actually HUGE) differences between the XB1 and the PS4 is that on the XB1 you can connect multiple USB3.0 drives and everything works seemlessly. I've only got one 2TB plugged into mine, but there's no hardware or software restriction on that.

Why would I rather pay another $50 to get a 1TB "internal storage" when I can get a 2TB drive for the same price?

Again, as far as I know - which maybe not the latest info - the PS4 does not allow you to just buy a 4TB HDD and plug it in and use it as storage. The XB1, does allow that. And the XB1 allows you to do that and then after you fill up the 4 TB HDD you can plug ANOTHER one in and do the same thing.

Why should MS be selling 1TB consoles if not for some stupid marketing thing?

External HDDs aren't as pretty, but you're right about the functionality. It's possibly necessary given Sony's marketing though and '1 TB' option. You can't really advertise 'easily expandable using commodity extarnal HDDs for great value so the internal storage doesn't matter too much' on the box. ;)

Ha! No joke, but that's why I said it's only relevant as "a stupid marketing thing". Which is exactly why MS announced their 1TB console before Sony came out and did the same, what? the next day?

It's ridiculous, but then again, a lot of console sales are based upon ridiculousness. The common consumer doesn't read B3D or Neogaf or anything else. The funny thing to me is that those under-informed users are going to be the same that don't care about "HDDs aren't as pretty" Hell, I don't care. My WD 2TB HDD is hanging off the back of my XB1 and I don't care. I'm far more concerned about getting my 360 out of my entertainment center than I am about the HDD.\

Then again, I keep thinking it'd be really cool if I could somehow link all my storage together. It's kinda annoying that I've got a 6TB Synology NAS and a 2TB USB HDD connected to my XB1. I'd much rather have my NAS just deal with all of it, and I could expand it to whatever I wanted. Ehhhhh.... I know, maybe some day.

That's a great idea. I have a 12Tb DS412+ NAS and would love to be able to just dump everything on there - it'd also be faster than the internal drive.

Really? That is awesomesauce. I've got a DS214 with two 3TB hot swappable drives running RAID0 and I'm about half way full and need to upgrade, but why do I also have to have a 2TB drive connected to my XB1?

Wouldn't it be awesome to just have all the storage taken care of in the same system?

That's an epic porn collection.
It's mostly TV and movies - legally obtained! I used to have a massive DVD collection of movies and TV boxsets and some years back began the arduous task of ripping them all so I can play them back through a PC.

I started with a Shuttle XPC, IR remote and MediaPortal software running on Windows XP along with a 1 Terabyte Buffalo LinkStation, then a 4Tb LinkStation then I shifted to a MacMini running XBMC and eventually migrated to the 4 day Synology DS412+. That will keep me going while HDD sizes increase at the same pace, it used to be populated with 2Tb HDDs now it's full of 4Tb drives. Then next jump, when space becomes tight will be replacing the 4Tb HDDs with 6Tb HDDs.

Now it's my everything storage. iTunes, TimeMachine, software library, music, random projects I'm working on and would love it I could be use it with my consoles for games.

Dedicated. That's why Rancid is up in arms.

Nah not up in arms and I hope it didn't come off that way. It's just once you go NAS you never go back, and it does seem just stupid at this point to have a 2TB HDD hanging off the back of my XB1 when every other computer in my house is networked and accessing the NAS. The XB1 is nothing but a computer, the same as the Gateway POS I've got right next to it. So why can both my HTPC and the XB1 access the NAS to play video and music shares but if I want to game, then the XB1 can only access additional storage through the local USB?

I've been thinking of expanding my two-bay NAS to something like DSoup has, but it would make that decision a lot easier if the XB1 could access and use that storage for games as well.

Any news as to when are we getting a slim X1? My guess is late 2016 in a new process, either that or just after E3 2017. Can't see it happening earlier/later.

General statements like this aren't helpful. It depends on the NAS, or more specifically, the filesystem, I/O stack, operating system, network stack and interface.
I think this will be the case on any network. Try benchmarking with crystaldiscmark for example.

They could treat your local NAS/SAN device as if it was a store, and whenever you want to play the game, if it's not already on the console's local flash/drive it would install from there. If they ever get the PS4 quick-install tech, it would make for a better user experience without them having to wait for 20-50GB to be transferred across the gigabit network. No latency impacts at all.

As you say it depends on a lot of factors but how hard is that to advertise or quantify, atm usb3 drive over 250gb = external storage, simple.
No external parties or torrent clients ruining performance.

Consoles offer an experience, unless the nas offers a qos its probably wise to shun it from a platform holders veiw.
