News & Rumors: Xbox One (codename Durango)

Revenue, no, mindshare yes. Pretty much ever new game gets announced for the PS4, whereas people have to play hush-hush when talking about the 720. Granted, this won't matter after E3, but it's still not a good thing.

Except publishers and developers aren't really playing "hush-hush" when they are constantly saying it will run on PS4 and other consoles.

They obviously can't mention Durango by name since the next Xbox hasn't been revealed yet, but is anyone doubting that when they say other consoles, that they don't mean the next Xbox? :)

Everyone that knows about the ps4 (forum warriors and developers) already knows there will be a new xbox. No one else cares.

Until they're ready to start advertising and showing the product an announcement has extremely limited impact.

Well whether they could think they made a mistake wrt specs or not, I guess their best bet is to stick to the "plan".
I think Pachter is right, they will "trash" the PS4, inefficient power hungry, etc. and leverage a good old fashioned fan boy war which may create enough noise for a while...

Business as usual...

The fanboy war is the never ending meatgrinder of opinion and zeal that chews up message boards and spits out shite! And we've all got front seats for the next season.

The Sony HW fans have been fighting on the back foot since 2001, but 8 GB GDDR5 has given them a new burst of energy and they're waiting for the Durango reveal so they can go on the counter-offensive. It's time for MS fanboys to spend a few years fighting guerilla tactics: name dropping exclusive titles and then retreating without putting up a substantive argument.

It's time for the MS fans to get L.A.Z.Y. D.E.V.S. tattooed across their knuckles and charge the FLOPS machine guns.

hard core gamers mind share in March means diddly-squat. Average consumers have never even heard of Ps4 yet

Following that thought why should they release a new console anyway while a lot western countries are in recession and it's expected to only get worse? Sure, a lot hardcore gamers are waiting for new hardware but if the households have no money to waste on fluff it might not even mean much when and who releases first.

eh, I wouldn't say it's that black and white.

I know a lot of people that I don't consider hardcore gamers that already have heard of ps4.

The thing was on all of the major e-news networks after it's announcement.

because one of the ways to get an economy rolling is to get the people to spend money.

bottom line is most people don't care until they see them on the shelves

That is a terrible looking logo. What does the random notch mean or indicate?

I don't think MS would have such a poorly designed logo for something as important as Xbox.

It's too curvy too, doesn't match their more angular logos for Win8/Surface, Office 2013 etc.

Also, can someone ask Proelite on GAF why he's so sure Durango will play games offline? It doesn't match what i'm hearing.

just an educated guess here but I'd say because.... it would be utterly stupid to not allow offline gaming while still meeting their other goals.

and I submit that MS is not stupid... so.

I think Edge was wrong on that front

Hmm, except it's not just Edge, the Eidos exec also said the same thing:

And bgassassin said always online too, FWIW Proelite was vocally disagreeing with bgassassin about the 3 GB and 2 core reservation a month ago and now has changed his tune.

It may seem stupid on MS's behalf, but bkilian has noted he had more than a few frustrations with the decisions of Xbox management.

And always online does let them do things that would not be possible with a console that has to work offline as well.

I think it's more likely that you probably can't play games offline that haven't first been registered online with the console through some kind of unique key method. I suppose that would be one way of preventing used games while still allowing offline play? And then after that perhaps the game disc becomes unable to support more registrations. In the case of a damaged console, I guess there's something you would do with your gamertag to transfer all of your previous online registrations to the new console, and in the event someone wasn't being honest about a damaged console, they only have 5 days worth of offline play left on their original console unless they take their console online before the 5 day time limit is up.

And once they do that on the original console after transferring their game registrations to a new system, none of the games they registered before work on the original system, only the newer one. A system like this could be effective. You have to check in online once every 5 days to maintain your offline play, to reset your offline countdown clock. Doesn't sound like too bad a solution. If you sign on four days in advance of your 5 day time limit after transferring all your games to a new machine, you lose offline play to those games instantly. So, someone could only game the system for at best 5 days if they aren't being truthful.

No, 'always online' as Edge, Eidos, bgassassin etc use the term is that the console will be unable to play any game when offline.
Not just you have to be online to register the game.

It is implied in that XDK leak too.

exactly

that goes to my earlier point about having a system to play offline and still meet their other goals

That does say anything about games requiring online connection to play. Only that the box itself will require it. A minor but important distinction.

What I think is what is going to happen is that you will need online to be able to validate ownership and start the game. Afterwards, you may not need to stay connected. The discs themselves as he mentioned are basically throw away distribution media and thus no longer needed in order to verify ownership and thus not needed in order to start a game.

I'd be surprised if PS4 didn't go for something along those lines as well considering physical media for them is also throw away distribution media. The only way to verify that the person playing the game actually owns the game is to verify it online prior to starting the game.

But who knows, perhaps Microsoft and/or Sony will put in an "offline" mode similar to Steam on PC. I think it's rather doubtful myself as it provides a wide open avenue for potential pirating.

always online points more to updating the games and system and DL demos and services and content remotely and having waiting for you when you get home. no different than my Direct TV box

I seriously doubt that should be extended to mean you can not play a game offline yet.

that is quite a reach at this point in what we know

It really isn't implied in the XDK leak. All they mention is that it's used for keeping games and the system current with updates. And the Eidos dev didn't actually say that it is happening. He only suggested that he liked the idea of it in a hypothetical manner, if it's the same Eidos dev comment that I'm thinking about.
