News & Rumors: Xbox One (codename Durango)

With the current install sizes (20-60 GB per game), 500 GB is a complete joke. On my PS4 I'm glad I replaced the 500 GB with a 1.5 TB drive.

Nice , so you tripled the space and how much did that cost you ?

I picked up a nice 4TB usb 3.0 backup drive for $120 and now have 4.5TB of hardrive space which looks to be about the same cost as a 1.5tb 2.5inch drive.

In regards to storage, and I'm not sure how it works on PS4, but on Xbox One at least its honestly not even something you really need to think about. I have about 18 games on my console and it's only at 42% of my 500GB HD. The important thing to note as a user, is that you just keep downloading and playing, and don't have to manually manage storage. If you get to the point where your next download won't fit, the console automatically selects the title you haven't played in the longest amount of time and un-caches it, and completes your download with nary a whimper. The un-cached title stays in your game list, but with a dimmer icon indicating if you want to play it, you'll need to download/re-cache it again; and the cycle continues. In this way your most recent 30+ games are always at the ready.

Of course you can do it manually if that's your preference, or add more drives as well. Hell, you can even have hard drives full of games you swap in and out if you wanted. It's really up to the user but I don't think storage capacity is really an issue yet. Now if games start pushing 100+GB then I might change my tune. :)

Looks like they are starting versions with a 1TB hard drive:
Not brilliant value for money but I don't want a HDD hanging off my Xbox One so this is tempting. I stuck a 1Tb HDD in the PlayStation 4 on day one for the same reason. The custom HDD is my least liked 'feature' of Xbox.

Thank you Microsoft! Now Sony will have no choice but to follow.

It'll be interesting to see if Sony follows suit as MKV is the preferred method of distribution for pirated movies, especially anime, which Sony do publish themselves. It's not like people can't transcode and hardsub other formats for use on consoles, but it actually surprised me that Microsoft made this move. They must have been really convincing in negotiations with the various movie studios to allow that onto the console.

Do the movie studios have any say in it? I can't see why they would. Their relation to XB1 is BRD movies, for which MS pays the license, and streamed movies for which XB1 is just an internet portal. Even if this move pisses the movie studios off, what are they gonna do about it?!

As well as VOD which is a significant revenue stream for Microsoft on Xbox and I'd imagine Sony on PS.

So the impact isn't as direct as it would be for Sony (as a publisher of movies). But it's still there as there will be contractual obligations with regards to the various movie studios to allow their movies to be played as VOD on the console.

Don't Microsoft have a movie streaming service on Xbox One, akin to Sony's Video Unlimited service? If not, then yeah they have nothing to lose.

I forgot about that. Is their movie streaming service doing well enough that they need to pander to the movie studios? There's so much competition in that space, some of these services must be missing out on use. If Live movies is a nice little earner, then yes, they might have had to make some promises about playback file formats, although clearly they can't have made such promises. Worst case, they implied they wouldn't support pirate friendly formats but have gone ahead anyway. I can't really imagine there's anything happening here that really involves the studios (although media business can be weird!_).

Anyone that is familiar with the container will have reasons to use it. Any of my home movies that I've manipulated will end up in an MKV container.

I can't remember where I read it, and I may be remembering it incorrectly, but I believe I read somewhere last year Microsoft saying it was a "significant" and highly profitable revenue stream. And there was speculation that revenue from VOD on the console may eventually surpass revenue from game licensing for the console.

Again, I may be remembering things incorrectly so take that with a grain of salt. :)

As are all of mine, and I'm highly annoyed that the PS3 that I use as a Netflix player doesn't play .mkv files requiring me to add a network switch to accommodate the WDTV player that I also have to have connected in order to play the .mkv files. (The Netflix app on the PS3 is far superior to that on the WDTV and the PS3 media remote is also vastly superior - and controls both the PS3 and the Bravia.)

So, it looks like MS might finally add a feature to the Xb0x that is of actual value. Of course, I'll believe it when it actually gets implemented and the interwebz convince me that it works.

Aren't there disc players & TV's that also read MKV via USB?

Sony put Cinavia on their films, so they won't play (I believe respecting Cinvavia protection is a condition of having bluray now)

If it is seen as a threat to the movie studios (Which I doubt) then they will just take up the option to use the protection.

MKV is also supported by some video camera I believe so it's not just a pirate format. It's actually a very good container for videos, if you mux a film and audio into it, the resulting file will be smaller than say an .mp4 file, despite the content being identical.

This one is quite surprising, I never expected a feature like this to be honest. Nice to have and snap in some cases.

You will be able to pre-order and pre-load digital games on the Xbox One.
