flash is an order of magnitude (or two?) better than HDDs, far more so than an HDD's who's head is also skipping about saving video and loading webpages and whatever.
Access time for flash may be fast compared to a HDD, but unless you got multiples of channels of flash chips accessing in parallel, both read times and especially writes are going to suck like a hard vacuum. Plus, the wear issue. 8GB flash to work with and tombstoning potentially gigs of RAM at a time is gonna wear out real quick. Far too quickly to be feasible in a consumer device that needs to be reliable for years on end.

I never put any of my consoles vertically in my whole life. It always seemed fundamentally unstable, and knowing how fast those discs spin even more so if it got tipped over or something.

Just seems like a bad idea.

Also my current entertainment center doesn't have enough height between shelves anyway.

You've obviously haven't fooled around with an original PlayStation that reads disks more reliably/faster when set vertically/upside down.

Yep, I had that version as well! I have only had one fall (360 not ps1), and it was my fault for moving furniture around. The two that I do stand vertical are up against the edge of the wood to help prevent my son from bumping them.

I completely agree. I was just pointing out one area where it would be beneficial, but that doesn't make sense in relation to everything else and I don't expect flash to be used for anything other than OS, like every other device out there.

Flash will also probably assist with the boot times for the X1.

And the most critically used apps will reside partially or wholey within the flash (skype/iexplorer/etc) So you can "snap" those programs up simultaneously in middle of your game when the hdd is thrashing away loading game data (eg textures) from hdd to the unified memory.

A mishmash of news, hodgepodge for all of yah'.

This is how the new Xbox One Gamercards are going to look. (aside from taking pics to your own avatar -you can now take photos of full-body poses-, you can also choose between 300 gamerpics at 1080p to select from since day one)

Xbox One DVR is going to be a big win for indie gamers, according to Phil Harrison, given the fact that now indie developers can now promote their work without having to buy expensive stuff to create videos.

Xbox One gameplay capture is heading to Facebook and Youtube in 2014.

PS4 version recently "nothing to complain about" XBO version "not that bad"

Damning with faint praise?

Somehow I bet it's more impressive than people let on...

Somebody claimed it was 720P (along with bad textures etc) too, but I highly doubt they'd have a trained eye for resolution, probably just believing the internet PS4 reports from a while back.

Crappy thing is, evidently no pics/vids of XBO version allowed (supposedly a new map under NDA, or cue XBOX version looks crap and they're hiding if you're so inclined). I hope somebody sneaks some anyway, this is the smartphone age.

60 FPS is good though.

It'll be decent, but let's face it: BF4 is essentially a PC port at this point. Hardly optimized for PS4 or X1.

I would think most of their energy has gone into Mantle/AMD..but I have high hopes for Mass Effect being much further along than BF4. So I won't let this dampen my spirits for future console Frostbite 3 games.

Errr? I'm sure they put good effort into as it's such a huge property and will sell a lot on next gen console, heck they might arguably be the most important version (will probably sell second to current gen, but will have a bigger Halo effect). Besides that, Dice (I assume) has a lot of manpower.

If we assume consoles are king (they are) then XBO/PS4 are the premier console versions and as such are something of a flagship.

Slapping together a port would be something to happen to a game that doesn't sell 10M+ copies..., not one of the biggest franchises in the world.

Thing is it's still a first generation game (launch window), with all the time constraints and issues that comes with that.

I'm not saying it will be bad, but I think people may need to set their expectations a bit lower maybe.
Especially when seeing it in an unfinished state.
These games are being developed against moving goal posts right up to launch etc.

All they really need to do for launch is make it look considerably better than the PS360 version, which is basically guaranteed. I'm sure each iteration after will look progressively better.

Trouble is I wonder if that's what people are comparing them too, or are they comparing them to the PC version.

People were:
"wow the ps4 version is looking rough"
"that explains why their not showing xbones one, must look like crap"

Even though even at this stage I bet they probably look better than the PS360.
