News & Rumors: Xbox One (codename Durango)

why are we still arguing about this junk? both consoles now charge for online mp, but we are never arguing about it on ps4 threads. but it's just constant endless on xbox threads. maybe one reason xbox threads tend to be 2x as big as ps ones around here?

it's just sad how it's simply shifted from "paying for mp is a travesty" to "paying for app or feature X is a travesty". what happened to the former?

Both are a waste of money IMO considering you can get them for free on other platforms but the difference between Sony and MS is quite clear:

I'm honestly on the fence as to whether to buy an XB1 or not but the more I hear about the pay more I'm thinking it's not worth it.

right. paying for mp is not a problem anymore after it was the last 12 years. just like i said.

I guess you missed the part of my post that said "Both are a waste of money IMO"

now the problem is whatever difference exists between gold and ps+ that favors ps+

No. As the rest of my post stated, I'm considering buying an XB1, PS4 does not come in to this other than to demonstrate by comparison what a poor deal the XB1 is. I've no interest in purchasing a PS4 whatsoever, my purchase decisions is XB1 or not (originally because of Kinect and Skype, now seemingly reduced to Kinect). Let's not bring console bias into this.

Please, Take the discussion about what is or isn't behind a monthly service charge paywall to some other thread if you absolutely must continue that ad nauseum discussion.

IGN:

So now, finally given the chance, I picked each of them up and was surprised by how solid and well-built the Xbox One feels compared to the first-generation Xbox 360. And believe the hype: the new Xbox is almost inaudibly quiet when running.

So there goes my 950 mhz GPU, all in service of being a better set top box because you know, that's what people are really gonna buy a $499 gameplay machine for  Gotta make sure it's quiet for Grandma! Cause really, Grandma is your target here, right MS?

I'd prefer a little fan noise and more power.

The funny thing is they did it for you, not Grandma. :)
I cant see anything but games putting the system under such load to ramp up the power.

That's also my preference, but only as long as I don't hear it from the couch. This time around, both consoles will be extremely silent at all times except maybe during heavy games, and being silent during media playback is the most important. The modern power management is one of my favorite new feature.

The hobby of playing online computer games or the hobby of turning my TV on and off with my voice? Because I'm not interested in paying for online gaming considering I get it for free on the PC, and I think it's a stretch to describe controlling my TV with my voice/hands as a hobby which is what interested me about the XB1 before all this pay wall crap came up.

If online gaming and access to other services that are free on a PC are of such great value then by all means put them behind a pay wall, but why put basic features of the hardware that I've already paid for behind that wall (IR blast, TVR, TV control etc..)?

what? TV control is for gold only? Did not know that

Edit: sorry BRiT. Just saw your post

U know why MS dumps these features behind a pay wall?

They don't want the same circumstance that Sony experienced with the PS3. People buying a console that probably is/was the most feature rich bluray player to ever exist for half of what basic bluray players were going for at the time of the ps3 launch. Barely or not buying any games, forcing Sony into a loss with little or no ability to recover those losses through manufacturer licensing fees.

MS doesn't want people buying their lossy or at cost hardware and see those buyers contributing little or nothing at all towards MS's bottom line.

People should consider the console manufacturers' profit models when looking at their paywalls and what features fall under them.

No no, no one bought a blu-ray player disguised as a ps3, these forums said so during the hidef war. :)

I don't think gandma is their target. And I think low power is more a regulatory compliance.

Power over noise for me, but when i'm downloading games off of my connection (like off of Steam) i don't like sleeping anywhere near my devices...they keep me awake.

I wonder what the power draw of both systems will be during video playback. Right now, using a PS3 or 360 is entirely non-eco friendly at 50-150+ W when a Chromecast does the same if not better in 1.6W.

The xbone's going to be a minimum of 14W, if that last leak of info was correct.

For all the media playback and downloading stuff some ARM APU could have done the job for a few watts.

True, but that's another chip. I don't know about the Xbox One but the PS4's ARM core is embedded in the south bridge - which is the ideal place to locate it for Trust Zone to secure all I/O and for the chip to manage background uploading and downloading.. If it has on-chip cache (speculation) it never need touch main memory.

The ARM core itself couldn't cope with high profile H.264 streams, ARM needs hardware decode for that and if the AMD APU is powered for GPU decode and output, powering the CPU cores to feed it is negligible if they are running the OS/playback software anyway.

We don't know, but I expect the ARM core in the PS4 to be far less powerful than even the types of chips found in cheap Android phones.

Right then MS would hear everyone complain about how much noise it produced like they had to this gen.

MS can't win any way they go.

Nah, it wont even be in the same ballpark noise-wise.

It's impossible to please everybody. Folks get too obsessed with specifications, how they compare to their PC, a top of the line PC, the competitor's box and it's nuts. If anybody is worrying about Xbox One's specifications, go take a look at Ryse. Regardless of what anybody may think of the gameplay, that is one nice looking game. If that's the kind of standard of CryEngine 3.0 games on next gen consoles, I'm well pleased!

A little extra noise. Currently XB1 is supposedly silent. MS could have aimed for very quiet, inaudible against the background audio of the TV, and pushed the performance envelope a little more. That's a compromise that some are going to be in favour of, and my expectation is far more people would be in favour of a little noise and more power than less noise and total silence.

I think they are under the belief that this system will be used so much that they have to start dealing with constant 8-10 hour use daily from people wanting to use it for all sorts of media, generating stress levels the average 360 has never seen before. It's the aversion to more billion dollar warranty write-offs that has them spooked from pushing the system anywhere near its design tolerances even under the most extreme conditions.
