News & Rumors: Xbox One (codename Durango)

Not surprised that you can't voice chat across platforms. I'm ok with it. I'd rather have improved chat quality on Xbox One all the time then have people with 360s jump into my party and have everyone's chat quality revert to low quality.

With so much emphasis on the cloud, I'm wondering why they wouldn't be able to resample voice communications (from Xbox One) to a format compatible with Xbox 360. Granted there isn't anything that can be done to improve the quality of Xbox 360 users when chatting with Xbox One users.

Perhaps they figure universally good quality is better than the potential of good quality voice being mixed with the lower quality voice of Xbox 360 users, which then might erroneously lead consumers into thinking that Xbox One voice chat quality was erratic and inconsistent. Actually, this probably has a lot to do with it. I can already imagine the forum wars with PS4 fans going on and on about how voice chat quality is so inconsistent on Xbox One.

So, perhaps it's more a marketing driven decision than a technical one. Unfortunate, if this is the case, that console politics would force them to go that route.

I don't expect any 180s on anything they've announced in the last couple of weeks.

More details on the Xbox One protoype controllers that had a LCD, speakers and/or biometric sensors...

Looks like they're saying core gamers didn't like it. So in order to satisfy core gamers they only made moderate changes. :/

Maybe the rumored Microsoft smartwatch will be supported, both are using transparent aluminum.

At this point, 16GB would be more believable than 12GB, at least they can use higher density as soon as next year. (not that I believe either) :???:
Whatever the amount of memory the console is going to use, I am glad this rumour has been debunked and ruled out.

Deep down I wanted it to be true but this means we can finally abandon the idea of being expectant about news when in actuality it wasn't going to happen.

What hasn't been ruled out is backwards compatibility though. One MS rep has said that backwards Compatibility is still possible. Great news, if you ask me.

Wow, great article. They are damning the Wii U controller here

The interest surrounding the sheer potential of the Impulse triggers is, however, a reminder that there is no innovation of that scale anywhere else on the pad. I ask Alam whether, during the design of the Xbox One controller, there was any temptation to try something completely new. The DualShock 4 includes a front-facing touch-pad and light strip, while the Wii U has built a controller around a tablet.

"Yes there was a temptation," Alam explains, "and during the process there were a number of prototypes with displays on them, with speakers on them."

"The first thing about a display on a controller is that it needs to be super hi-res, which chews the battery life much more aggressively, which will irritate gamers. The second thing is that your HDTV will be the better display, and your eyes having to move between screens to get all the information is not a compelling gameplay scenario. It makes for worse gameplay."

Also

What's widely considered the stand-out improvement, as detailed here, is the Impulse triggers. Alam and his team have shrunk rumble motors down to about one eighth of their previous size and scattered several of them across the pad, allowing for more subtle force feedback in localised parts of the controller.

In one FPS-style demo CVG played, firing a virtual pistol with the controller's right trigger resulted in simulated recoil occurring on just that part of the controller. In another demo, which had the same virtual hand magically spawn a fire ball, you could 'feel' the explosive projectile explode from the centre of the controller and out towards your fingers.

"The palm of your hand, which is usually what picks up the force feedback first, is not the most sensitive part," Alam explains.

"It's the tip of your fingers that's the most sensitive, so if you really want high-fidelity haptics, you need to find a way to get rumble at players' fingertips."

Man I am hyped, they were super smart and analytical about the controller. Perhaps the smartest thing was not trying to do too much.

Please keep the kinect discussion to the other thread that's completely dedicated to it. Thanks.

Sounds like there is some kind of FIFA deal coming at gamescom. Maybe Barclay's Premier League or something?

"Spencer promises that, at Gamescom, they'll be "talking about some unique exclusive coming to the platform; we're going to talk about Europe's biggest franchise... we have some stuff." Presumably the franchise he's talking about is FIFA. "

I would assume it would be FIFA, that would be the European equivalent of the NFL agreement in the US.

Maybe. Maybe DirecTV just decided offering one of their biggest drivers of new-subscriber ala carte was a bad idea. Maybe the NFL is preparing their own streaming service. I'd say wait until GamesCom, but that would be a terrible place for MS to announce anything about American Football.

didn't some big guy in the nfl own part of directv and there was a big deal about it being exclusive to just directv ? Mabye that is the change.

Direct TV is required by it's contract with the NFL to offer Sunday Ticket online...

On March 23, 2009, it was announced that DirecTV paid $4 billion to extend its exclusive contract for NFL Sunday Ticket until 2014.[1] The contract extension also calls for the establishment of an online version of NFL Sunday Ticket, for customers who cannot subscribe to DirecTV by 2012 as well as a separate NFL Network-produced "Red Zone" channel to be carried on other American television providers.[2]

I guess the idea is some people absolutely cannot get Direct TV due to line of sight issues. Not sure why Direct TV wouldn't want to offer this online package anyway, would seem very lucrative.

Which doesn't force console access I suppose, but it seems semi-likely given Xbox's new NFL deal.

Kind of a shame things like this would be allowed to be exclusive at all. I dont think the NFL gets it, business wise (funny to say about such a lucrative league)

I did some googling and the Madden Anniversary edition does specify you dont need Direct TV to use the Sunday Ticket sub with it. For PC's, tabs and phones, it specifically excludes PS3 though.

It's actually a fantastic deal, 99 bucks and you get the game and Sunday ticket sub. The sub alone normally goes for at least 225. I dont play Madden but you could always ebay it for probably 40 bucks net, so getting Sunday Ticket for 60 dollars.

I read something about NFL Sunday Ticket not coming back to Sony? They say this may mean Xbox scored it.

I wouldn't called the NFL "Europe's biggest franchise." FIFA would be, but each of the premier leagues are their own business, so I don't see how Microsoft could make a deal with FIFA for game broadcasts. They'd have to negotiate with the leagues.

I'm sort of remembering some dumb thing about FIFA 14 Ultimate Team on Xbox. Maybe it's just more about that, or maybe there is more exclusive content on Xbox for that game.

I'd love a sunday ticket type deal for Serie A where for x amount of money I could stream all games in high def since only Ria really broadcasts most of the games and the quality of picture sucks big time. Once in awhile fox soccer or someone will air a game.

So, considering recent performance, almost a certainty then?

Touche!

Interesting, but it could be one of those backwards strategies like Hulu when it started where they've decided allowing the programming on TV connected devices is a threat to their primary business.

What they announced at the Xbox One reveal event was some number of Ultimate Team DLC cards that would be exclusive. It didn't seem like a very big deal since so many people were speculating that they'd signed FIFA as a "next gen exclusive" this year, or that Ultimate Team in its entirety was going to be exclusive. My guess is they're mostly just going to premiere "next gen" FIFA gameplay on the Xbox One at Gamescom.

If they announced a La Liga and CL package available for reasonable price in the states I'd buy it day one.
