New Oblivion PS3 Screens + Info

The PS3 version of Oblivion isn't a simple port of the game either, although players who have picked up the 360 version will be very familiar with the control scheme. For one thing, the PS3 version has been optimized to take advantage of the Cell processor and hardware that the system offers. As a result, the game runs a lot faster than the 360 build. Entering dungeons or buildings results in a load of 3-5 seconds, compared to the 7-10 seconds or longer for the 360 version of the game. Similarly, the amount of framerate drops or hitches that cropped up in the wilderness as you accessed a new area on the 360 have been substantially reduced on the PS3 version. There is a plan to completely eradicate these issues as the game nears release, as well as fixing a number of bugs that were present in the other builds. Kiss the item duplication glitch goodbye.

Visual textures are much sharper in the PS3 version of the game.
The visual presentation of Oblivion has also been significantly enhanced. While it was a beautiful title on the 360, far off environmental details often displayed low resolution textures. This has been fixed with new shaders dedicated to rendering the foreground cleanly with sharper details, so rocky landscapes now have craggy appearances instead of smooth, non-distinct surfaces. While there is still a fair amount of pop-in that occurs (which can't be helped due to the size of the world), the draw distance is farther than the 360 version. As a result, screens from the PS3 version should approach those from high end PCs running Oblivion, which is an impressive feat. We'll have more on Oblivion soon, but for now, check out these new screens.

Nice improvements, but the screens fail to prove their point:

I had an assfull of this game after about ten hours. I have three friends that feel the same way, but it took them each around 100 hours.

Poor dumb bastards.

Looks like Oblivion with the LOD mods users released literally the day the game released on PC.

WTF is going on

Is this gen the death of multi-platform ports? Looks like the PS3 always gets the lackluster version, and it seems to get worse. Looks like SONY's WWS and exclusive dev's will be the only ones to actually push the PS3. Sad.

Improved load times are nice I suppose. Then again I cant say I'm too excited about oblivion in the first place. Not my type of game honestly.

Looks like they have also added some texture filtering over the 360 version? :???:

Anyway its nice to see a decent port on PS3 for a change, maybe this will lead other developers by example.

I had enough after 5. Can't believe people actually like this game. But to each their own. Bring on Mass Effect!

yes they improved the drawing distance, at least for the ground textures.

But anything else looks just crappy. I do not remember oblivion beeing that
ugly on my 360. cant stand overdone bloom. Guess its nice if you want it
for your ps3

What'd be really sweet would be if they allowed the use of end user mods.

Without the ability to fix the borked out of the box leveling system, I likely would've lost interest in Oblivion after ~10 hours, too. It would've been a pretty, but stupid, experience.

Since every ps3 has a hardrive, there shouldn't be anything on the hardware end that'd keep it from being able to support modding.

What are u talking about?

The game actually looks worse than this on the PC..

The screenshots don't really match what IGN is writing there, so i guess you have to see it to believe it and not judge from some crappy screenshots.

It sounds like an overall improvement compared to the 360 version though (at least to IGN).

+ Gamespot says the same:

The real enhancement is in the visuals, and (to some extent) the loading times. The game seemed to have a slightly smoother and more consistent frame rate than it did on the Xbox, though the difference wasn't enormous, and it seemed to us that the textures looked just a tad bit sharper. More obvious (and confirmed by Bethesda) was an improvement to the game's texturing over large distances. Remember how the original Oblivion had a line set an arbitrary distance in front of the player beyond which ground textures turned into kind of a muddy mess? That's all taken care of now, thanks to a new custom pixel shader. The effect is only noticeable outdoors--though it's more accurate to say the effect is not noticeable if you've never played a previous version of the game--but it's a nice addition nonetheless.

Oblivion will make extensive use of the PS3's hard drive by caching multiple gigabytes of data, which seemed to help with load times from what we saw.

Definite improvement with textures in the distance, comparing one scene from the screenshots with the same area on the 360. Don't need video, but you do need to see it side-by-side essentially (or remember how ridiculously ugly the textures look at a good distance)--which seems to happen a lot when looking for improvements in games.

Hmmm, It looks like the PC version with medium graphics detail settings (with some high settings to). No AA, look at the tree branches (blurry and perhaps 2d), the distance texture seem improved but not as much as I thought.

PS3 version?

PC with texture mod (I expected teh PS3 to come close to theese type of distant textures).

My oblivion never looked like that?

Could someone please point me in the direction of that LOD mod pls..?

For reference :

PS3 screenshot is from the framebuffer.

PS3 version is clearly better, although the 360 version does look to have deeper colours but thats mainly due to the fact that its taken from a TV and not 360's framebuffer. Also from looking at the ground near the wooden steps it looks as though PS3 version has a higher amount of texture filtering enabled compared to the 360 version.
