MS's "rush to next-gen could see the Xbox take a tumble

If Halo2 is the monster hit people expect and it sells into 2006, it could actually compete against Xenon (assuming it doesn't have backwards compatibility).

People find they can't play Halo2 on Xenon? Unless the Xenon games are really compelling (and for many people, maybe HDTV resolutions may be compelling enough), people may opt to hold off on buying the Xenon until Halo 3 releases for the Xenon.

Hmm, or they could release a sort of Halo remix package, have Halo1 with the pc elements intact and Halo 2 but with enhanced graphics...that wouldn't be a great solution, but its something.

Just gotta outsource that idea... don't think Bungie truly wants to spend time going back to past games for a redux ;)

May as well upgrade Halo 1 to Halo 2 standards (just to save some time instead of doing a whole new engine, maybe enable 720p while they're at it...) and merge them both into one continuous game :D I'd certainly buy a Xenon for that

That's fine as well, as long as they both get the xenon graphics treatment heh.

....and all the anti-MS fanbois will scream bloody murder for MS Game Studios trying to milk the cash cow beyond "reason"

An entire userbase of millions doesn't just abandon a system because a new one has come out and sold 200k units to early adpoters.

you should share your optimism with some old Sega fans on the board. They could talk about the DC, which died overnight.

Then they'd be badly wrong as the DC didn't die overnight at all. From the very start it never had EA on board, and the support it did have began to waver during 2000 as the PS2 market began to take shape. When Sega announced their decision to scrap the DC in January 2001 many developers had already decided it was a transitional machine, and were planning accordingly.

Even after this point though, DC hardware and software sales continued with games like Sonic Adventure 2, Phatasy Star Online and the Sega Sports 2K2 games getting very reasonable sales.

And the DC wasn't even superceded by another console from the same manufacturer after having had several years of gaining AAA titles (which is what I was talking about) - it was *scrapped* just over a year after coming out in Europe and the US. Despite this, it still didn't die overnight and has continued to receive some support in Japan untill recently - I think Puyo Puyo Fever from Sonic Team came out a couple of months ago.

Kind of proves my point! :)

IMO; Xbox is in its last year of sustained hits, at least in quality. Next year, E3 will all be about Xenon at MS booth. Only Sony can afford to sustain its previous generation, because of the enormous userbase. Even Nintendo will shift completely from GC to N5 in 2006, because GC userbase will not be enough to stay on its own.

But the point I was making was that Xenon isn't being released because MS couldn't get games for the Xbox for 2005, but because MS see it as the best way to tackle the next generation. And while Xenon development is bound to have an impact on Xbox development, there is still going to be a market for Xbox games and so people will make them. And I think there will be a lot of quality games in there too, even if they get overshadowed to some extent by the upcoming Xenon...

Yeah, those games are SOOOO similar...

Why don't you bitch about EA with their Sims or Madden lines or something instead? Eidos and Tomb Raider, etc.

I reall don't know how you can argue what he said. Nintendo has been milking thier cash cow Mario & Zelda more than any other franchise I could remember. jeez don't get so defensive...

Well, it depend on what you call "milking".

There's only 4 GTA (+1 add-on)... And i don't remember seeing Tommy Vercetti playing golf, doing Kart races, a fews Puzzles with his pals gansters.

Nintendo is really milking some of its franchises, especially the Mario franchise. But that's business.

edit: BTW Nintendo is not really creating a lot of IPs over the years, Sega OTOH for example has always, and still creating a lot of IPs...
Sega is no more on the race, Nintendo is.
Anyway this example shows that this business is not about only new (and therefore potentially unsuccessful) IPs.

mario sunshine is diffrent than mario kart.

ON the gamecube there is only 1 mario game , 2 if you count kart. On the ps2 there are 3 gta 3s , gta 3 , gta vice city , gta san adrones or whatever.

Square has what finaly fantsy x , x1 , xii ( are there more ?) we can even count kingdom hearts 1 and 2 since the dude from one of the final fantsys are in it if you want to count mario kart as milking .

Nintendo has 2 zelda's on the gamecube ?

I dunno I have no problem playing a new mario game or zelda game every 3-4 years . I would get sick of playing a mario game once a year though.

So, the point was Nintendo is milking theirs franchises... not Nintendo got severe acute sequeletis syndrome.

Mario Sunshine
Mario Kart
Mario Golf
Mario Party 5
Mario Tennis
Paper Mario 2

Are all from the Mario franchise, i don't see what you're trying to argue actually.

Vysez, you've got the point. Mario (the character) has appeared in more games than I can recall since he was created. I wouldn't be suprised if all the games with Mario in the title added up to 70 or 80 games across nitnendo's platforms. Not to mention movies cartoons and toys.

Now that's what I'd call milking a cash cow. Not that it really makes a difference, but what Legion said jokingly wasn;t far off the mark.

btw, how can you say there's 1 mario game on teh GBA? There's like 10.

and so

final fantsy x
final fantsy xi
final fantasy xi
final fantsy xii
kingdom hearts

soon to come out

final fantasy xi Chains of Promathia
kingdom hearts 2 .
then xii expnasions

Don't think its more than any of the big names do you ?

At least we don't get sequals of the same thing every year . then there would be problems .
