MGS4 realtime demonstration by Kojima

It's basically confirmed that the hair has 60,000 polygons and the moustache has the same polygon count as an enemy soldier model in MGS3 by this page @ playstation.com that reports that the hair is driven by physics simulation and the moustache polys = 1 enemy soldier in the previous MGS.

60,000 polygons on the hair alone? Can someone put that into perspective for me?

I'd think they in-game model would be a much lower detailed version of that, cause while playing, we'll never see that kind of detail. We hardly ever see Snake's face anyway during gameplay, and if the first person part gets upgraded and will be used more, we won't even see the model at all!
But it's good that even this early, there are such detailed models.
Very good things will be coming out of this next generation. :D

Ok. Guys please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that the soldiers from GOW are made up of 30,000 ploygons. The orginal source was around 1.5 million though.

The original source can be millions of polygons which are then "converted" (wrong term but u know what i'm talking about) into much lower polygon models with normal maps.

To put things into perspective, and if it's true that just the hair on Snake's head is 60k polygons, that alone is more than the average of polygons per frame in GT4 (source for that figure: nAo).

Seems like a bit of a waste to me in all honesty, but i guess it's good to have nice big numbers flying around.

Wow and to think we all thought GT4 looked nice. What does this mean? Did they find some new way to program videogames? I mean how could they afford to spend so much polys on just the hair? Does that mean that GT5 cars could use 50,000 polys per tire? 500,000 polys for the outside?

If you really want perspective think about this. PGR3's cars are made up of 80,000 polygons. 40,000 for the inside and 40,000 for the outside. So that means Snake's hair alone has more polys than the entire outside of PGR3's race cars!

BlueTsunami smells smoke. Looks around. Waits for the coming fire. Hopefully the flames can be doused quickly, before all hell breaks loose. QUICKLY. To the fire engine!

I would be carefull of what you say mckmas, your statement can turn into a Godzilla Vs Y Console Vs X console in a heartbeat.

About Solid Snakes flava sava, I would say that theres a concentration of polys there NOW but when the actual game comes out....it will probably be evened out with the environment and everything else.

I seriously didn't mean it like that. I was trying to put in perspective. Really.

Well, keeping this thread as smoke free as possible (unless it's GOOD smoke!), as i said, i was just putting things into perspective. And also said that IF IT'S TRUE, 60k polys just for his hair is way overkill and will probably only be used in realtime cutscenes. More like a show-off of what they can do with the hardware than a real NEED.
Personally i think someone down the line misunderstood, the 60k figure might be the count for the whole model. Still an amazing figure, but a tad more realistic.

Disclaimer: The above has no relation to what i think can and cannot be done on next gen consoles, it's a statement made from assumptions based on figures thrown around here.

(Seems i need to put disclaimers now to keep things peaceful.. u never know, some of these kids get so defensive at the first statement u make)

Seems to be the case now, it just takes one misunderstanding to cause a whole thread to die. I could tell the mckmas was just pointing out some numbers...but someone could have misinterpreted it and gone ballistic.

But the ONLY scinematic case that you stated (for that amount of polys being used like that) could be the case. I also find that amount of polys for a mustach overkill.

 @ the disclaimer. That's is so funny. I swear I might start doing that too. I should have put one under my statement. Good idea london.

Some not-really relevant information: A human has about 100000 hairs on his head on average, so if you assume, say, 16 vertices per strand for mostly rounded medium length hair you would need 1.6 million vertices. I'd say that even the mighty Cell will crumble under the physics load of simulating that, though. Just goes to show that we still have something to look forward to on PS4 ;)

Woah, cheers! Insane resolution! Downloading now..

Someone posted this pic to highlight the skin "modelling" - very impressive (note the creasing as his head changes from one position to another):

Holy freaking S***!!! Man this guy is crazy!! Talk about the details. I bet one million dollars nobody thought a developer would have had correctly folding skin. I know I sure didn't. And I don't care what nobody says that still looks like sweat coming down a dirty face to me.
