MGS4 3D engine post mortem [translation needed]

I think that first level (the demoed one) is the least impressive graphically. Latter parts of MGS4 are really breathtaking... Therefore tech demo didn't show anything that could prepare you for the full game

Because that's what it is, a tech demo. Tech demos generally are more impressive because of their limited scope.

Indeed, tech demos from my experience tend to be more impressive and often times have more features than the final game, probably due to time constraints, dev forgetting or just plain dropping the feature for something else.

As far as I can remember during the early Sega Saturn days when his quotes were being missinterpreted and doubts were raised as to what Saturn could do in 95 and early 96, Yu Suzuki himself stated that it is much easier to make a graphics demo run on Saturn because you do not actually play it or control the character and of course years later Yu Suzuki's team had a Shenmue prototype of wich there is a video of that really shows the graphical improvements made on that generation of hardware.

I'm sure that even though the MGS4 tech demo seemed controllable, it was not something that could just be sold at retail or we would find all kinds of flaws, like scripted or poor A.I., poor physics, rendering errors during heavily loaded battlefields, etc. I mean we were basically given a hand held tour of the graphics and what was being planned for the game.

It reminds me of when Id Software first demoed the "playable" tech demo of Doom 3 in 2002 that did run on a standard PC of that time and had features that were missing when the final game was released 2 years later like A.I. attacking each other and the pinky demon biting a texture mapped skin of a zombie and later tossing it in the air and swallowing it or when the HellKnight or Baron of Hell kills you and you see from a first person perspective that you are being lifted by the head only to hear a snapping sound, then see your decapitated body falling to the floor, and finally turning to face the mouth that your head is basically going inside of. A pretty awesome death animation that is missing from the final game and its expansion. Not to mention that the leaked tech demo could only be played by accessing the console.

Finally there is the Halo 2 "playable demo" that was shown at E3 2003 to a roaring crowd and featured alot of visual animations of the enviroment and characters that is missing in that game as well and basically the Halo 2 limited edition DVD talks about why so many things were cut from that E3 demo.

There is more of course like the rumored Sega Super GT arcade port running on Dreamcast as a tech demo internally at Sega but never being shown to the media and never having the game ported to sell on the retail shelf.
 
The Sega Super GT demo had zero relation to the arcade code aside from importing some of the assets.

Are you sure? I think that stage is exactly the same as the first one you could find in the arcades. This one though looks uglier. Which surprises me since the Dreamcast was Naomi based and Scud Race was running on model3

What you see in the video is the entire demo. It was just the track and a camera moving around it, nothing else.

There was a second devkit demo with two cars rendered on a piece of repeating road, again what you see in videos is the extent of the demo.

The demos were in the devkit to demonstrate basic rendering principles to developers, not to be Scud racer, they're just more interesting datasets than say a couple of spheres.

My guess is that these two demos were the extent of any scud racer on Dreamcast and the rest of the rumor was largely a result of press seeing them running on devkits and reporting 1+1=3.

The ARC1A PowerVR chip from 1997 has only a small fraction of the Dreamcast's performance. The later "Set 4" kits had about 40% of the performance of the final Dreamcast. this being LESS than 40% and also lacks many of the features in the PowerVR2DC chip.

the Super GT / Scud Race demo looks pretty good, even though it is not of the same standard of the arcade version on MODEL 3 which ran at 60 frames per second.

I won't take the statements of "XX% of the performance" at face value but I will definetly agree to understand that it was a engineering sample evaluation chip that was obviously not final and not the chip that was used in the PowerVR2DC chip.

In terms of polygon performance and features, I believe many Sega dev people like Yu Suzuki, and others admited to PowerVR2DC being superior to Model 3 and maybe I can imply that could be the reason why Sega Rally 2, a Model 3 port was ported using the technically inferior "WindowsCE" based dev tools instead of Sega's proprietary dev tools, of course Sega Rally 2 DC was a first year launch game in Japan and it proved to be near the Model 3 version, just not as good in terms of image quality, although as a console game it offered more features.

I don't know if the Genki ported version of Virtua Fighter 3 used the WinCE based dev tools, but that game was also launch and not really that close to the image quality of the arcade game.

But as I always understood it, Sega was trying to let game devs know just how easy it was to port or make games on DC, although I personally never thought that was such a good idea imho.

BTW thank you grandmaster. I literaly fell of my chair and probably broke my jaw seeing that dev kit version of S.C.U.D. race/Sega Super GT, I just thought I would never in my life ever get to see something I always thought of as a rumor. I also got to see the other tech demos for DC that were not shown to the press, this is really awesome.

I wonder if the Namco Rave Racer for pre-DirectX PC PowerVR1 is floating around there. That one at least I remember was allowed to be reported and photographed.

Correct, tech demos are never the game or the final game, they are meant to showcase features that may or may not be in the final game if made but allows the gaming press, the game dev, 3rd parties and even the console maker to get an idea of the capabilities that the console hardware will deliver.

Like I said also this perfectly relates to MGS4 on PS3 evaluation prototype to final retail as the differences in what is missing does not really indicate that the final hardware is lacking but rather that the final playable game will get edited to deliver the changing vision of the game developer.

Hows that for a layman's explanation.

If it exists there is a chance if they tile it could, or if they increase the texture reso.

Could they increase the rendering resolution, too? Or would they have to stick with 1024 x 768?

Does anybody of you know how much space Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is filling exactly on the 50GB Blu-ray disc it's shipping on?

Is it really full 50GB?
 
No reason to stick at 1024x768 if they dont have to which is what i was hinting at with the tiling comment, but we wont know until it comes.

It takes up 33GB.

Why would they increase the rendering resolution? The Xenos scaler works fine and getting a framebuffer that fits in 10MB (and thus avoids tiling) means that once the developers get the engine up and running with those parameters they can focus attention on getting performance up to snuff to get the product shipped.

The point of a port would be to get a finished product up as soon as possible so there really isn't a point to add bulletpoints that will only go noticed on the rare technical forum. There will be some compromises (especially in disk space) but there should be some areas where they may be able to gain some IQ (e.g. a little bit more memory may mean they can increase shadow map resolution or filtering).

The XB360 DVD's fit about 7 GBs. You'd be looking at 3 discs for 21 GBs, 4 for 28 GBs. I don't know how much extraneous, removable data there is. There aren't any HD movies AFAIK so there's not much to be saved there. Only the war company adverts that I recall. Compressed audio (if indeed MGS4 is uncompressed) probably won't save more than a few GBs at most even with multiple language support. If MGS4 is 33 GBs, I think a 3 disc version would be sporting some compromises.

And I would bet they would do a 2 disk SP/MP combo and texture resolution and reworking would be a compromise they invest a lot of work into. At the end of the day if you haven't designed your art assets and compression techniques to work within the confines of a DVD9 you are going to have to either rework these areas and/or make compromises in quality. We have seen the reverse case being true of 360=>PS3 titles and this would be a reverse example. That is the cost of being exclusive. I wouldn't doubt MGS4 isn't using a number of rendering approaches that favor RSX as well. 'tis life!

MGS4 has 28GB's of movie and audio files and only about 5gb of actual game data.


If we dont make the movies HD, and make the audio quality worse, You could fit MGS4 on 2 DVD9's with acceptable quality easily.

Uh...what movies are you talking about Oste? Sound I could believe, movies no. As every cutscenes apart from one I believe...maybe two...are ingame rendered...since they are fully interactive.

You say there is about 28GB of movie and audio, what exactly takes that much space for video? Are all those 'ingame' cutscenes actually H.264 AVC files or what :D? Aren't they just rendered 'ingame' or 'inengine' (or what ever you wanna call it):eek:?
 
Can we have some sources for all these numbers, please? Ostepop's post seems entirely mocking, as almost all the cutscenes are rendered realtime, as evidenced by pink Snake camoflaged to a sofa... Without some 'real' numbers, there's no intelligent debate to be had.

I said the 28gb of movie and audio total. I did not say how much was movies did i?

There are several movies that are not ingame rendered, stuff like the commercials etc, and a few cutscenes.

Most of the 28gb's is very high quality sound.

Edit: memory served me wrong. MGS4 seems to be 29.9 gb. So Audio & movies will be a little lower :)

Im not mocking anything, PS3 owners on this board are far to sensitive whenever MGS4 is mentioned. Anything that can be interpeted as "bad" and everybody go into full defence mode. .

My originial numbers were just drawn from my memory, and smoking highly rated weed everyday may have adverse affects on that :)

Gamedata seems to be higher than 5gb, if we do some very rough calculations it could be up around 9gb or so based on how long it takes to install the first installment (that one is 4.6gb) and how long the other installs are, these estimates are rather far from perfect, and assumes that only gamedata is installed, which we do not know, it also doesn't factor in seek times etc. This estimate would overestimate the actual size.

Anyways, here is what MGS4 contains. If you dont think its official, put your own copy into your pc and check foryourself.
