Kinect technology thread

BLITZ(not be confused with Blitz Game Studios) released some hacks to use Kinect with Flash, Silverlight or Unity on their BLITZ Labs blog. It works by setting up a socket server using Node.js. Check the link below for a step-by-step walkthrough video...

I was hoping the facial mesh was using the depth camera and would help locate eyes, mouth and make it easier to recognize features in dim conditions. From the mesh you know roughly where those features are located, so the "optical" portion of the facial recognition would be easier. Otherwise I'm screwed on this, because my living room is pretty dark.

If its anything like kinect id or kinect adventures (it crudely assigns you to an avatar that resembles you, and can detect when you open your mouth), it should work even in the dark, or better said, if the only light source is coming from the tv.

There is a new Eurogamer's article on Kinect hacking.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-kinect-hacks-article

I didn't know about some of the stuff featured in the article like the Tetris game, Predator, volumetric fluid occlusion demo, etc etc etc, although I missed not seeing this video featured there.

It shows a guy playing a FPS using one hand for every action, and he says it's better than the mouse. Sometimes it gets clumsy somehow but I'm surprised at how well and smoothly it plays most of the time.

Looks promising, similar to Move FPS controls. Only shooting doesn't fully convince me (the fist and the open hand stuff seems tiring). But of course you could design a game to only use shotguns or perhaps a sword if they can track the other hand for this as they claim.

Ahahaha, I can't stop laughing at the guy who allows someone using Kinect to pretend like they have breasts... Hahaha...

One thing I hope some developer for Kinect does is take advantage of the Kinect sensor for convincing 3D illusion effects in games similar to the Tetris and this demo, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8J_eBRgvx_4 .

That I find far FAR more compelling and interesting than stereoscopic 3D since it requires no glasses, no fancy and expensive TVs, and is generally a very convincing illusion of 3D. Combine it with motion and interaction and it could very likely be a hit game.

Sony has a team working on something like that, but unfortunately their vested interest in selling 3D TVs means it's going to be combined with stereoscopic 3D. If they are smart, they won't make it require stereoscopic 3D.

Regards,
SB

Wow. That's really impressive. Even more so giving that kinect has pretty much just come out, there's probably more ways to improve the gameplay with extra time to prototype.

Can't wait to see what's coming up next :p

Seems like a nice way to control Project draco the panzer dragon spiritual successor. hopefully better done then lair.

Actually, i'm hoping they keep the on rails aspects of the gameplay for Project Draco (but just because i love PD so much XD), but yes, for a similar game could be a nice way to control the game.

That's similar to this awesome roller coaster that is life... what goes down has to eventually come back up!

Cool news if true.

A new video showing an user moving freely in a 3D environment.

Now that the Kinect games thread has been closed http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=57719 I thought it would be a good idea to mention there's a rumour going around that SSX series will make a come back, this time as a Kinect exclusive title, yay.

http://www.gamersmint.com/new-kinect-ssx-title-in-development

A new SSX title made exclusively for Kinect might very well be in development.

Retired internet videogame detective who’s made his home on twitter now after closing down his website have made another crackdown.

This time, he’s discovered that microsoft has bought out the domains “SsXKineCt.com” and “KinectSSx.com”.

Here’s what he tweeted:

http://whois.domaintools.com/kinectssx.com |http://whois.domaintools.com/ssxkinect.com – these are also owned by MS

The domain registar is Microsoft Corporation, US and it might very well be possible that such a game is in development.

We’ll mark MS a email and see what they have to say about this.

Thanks for sharing. There are some things that I didn't know for sure. It turns out to be that the place where my body looks lighter green is 20 centimetres away or so from the place I can't move any way further --meaning I can't move away from Kinect, where I position myself as further as I can go.

I played with my brother, sister and a friend, but never simultaneously, just watching each other play. I wonder if, taking into account the distance to the camera, there is enough space for two people to play conveniently if we play where I said I can't move further away.

On another matter, Michael Phelps will have his own Kinect game. The game puts you in control of an up-and-coming swimmer entering the grueling and demanding world of competitive swimming in the hope of taking down Michael Phelps.

Does that has a anti gravity module or so dam kinect can do everything.
j/k

Wonder how they expect people to do it probably comes with a bench where you lay ontop of it.
