Horizon Zero Dawn [PS4, PC]

For 99% of the players this will not be a problem. The graphics is outstanding except for the animations. One of the best games in this category. Very impressive.

But these NPC dialogs will disturb some. The sequenze I've linked is very bad. I would even claim that it is the worst thing I have ever seen for the PlayStation 4. This video was already viral in the last few days so I came across it.

I found the E3 trailer impressive and fascinating, I had really high hopes on the title but with scenes on such a low level the game could slip into the abyss. Mainly because there will be many such scenes.

The facial animations are obsolete and partial ridiculous. Even the over 12 year old Half Life 2 can make this better. Soulsless characters can hardly work.

The writing is very bad.

The male voice actor should be ashamed. His yelling is very annoying. This is where all the hope of the German synchronization rests.

The direction is terrible. Look at how the guy is set in scene. How he twists etc. This is ridiculous in 2017. Guerilla should really pick up Uwe Boll he would make it 100 times better...

Such sequences are miserable and backward. According to the Neogaf videos the quality of the cut-scenes varies a lot.

I do not even understand how such a thing is possible at all today with such a big and important Sony blockbuster.

It is by far the worst scene because they wanted to show a schizophrenic guy and it failed. Other scene are much better and main custscene seeing in the last story trailer are great... The scene is viral with fanboy not PS4 owner and only on videogame forum...

All people wanted the game seeing other video and understand it is one failed scene... It can arrive in any games...

Because it was not mocap maybe they can patch it. I am not even sure the scene will be the same in final version and the only video with the scene was removed... It would be funny if they change it...

Honestly, it's like to judge the graphics of a game on one bad texture. Usually, the cutscenes looks better than in similar games.

I think that only La Noire is really better in this field. TW3 seems also slightly superior.

The worst part in this cutscene is clearly the VO.

Someone made a small comparison on GAF : http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=229435561&postcount=2450

NPCs look much better on Zero Dawn from a graphic standpoint at least.

i don't know how to feel about that game after watching sone previews. I'm surprised all of the previews i've seen are that positive. Its probably the tight controls and gameplay but i guess the real strenghts will be story and visuals.

Yeah the setting is slightly interesting but honestly ultimately a bit boring and i think they should've made a proper Dinosaur game with some fantasy elemets for gameplay variation maybe.
I will not get emotional over mechanical Animal looking things that I destroy while real Dino's would intimidate me more(way more actually) and force me to make decisions. I would feel bad for killing the 10th one that isn't hostile but gives me XP points or whatever... There isn't any of that in this game. You'll just destroy anything mechanical because why not, right??

People wouldn't care that much if spielbergs E.T was a robot and not a actual being. see what i mean? What they put into that game is what I would expect in a futuristic killzone. It would actually be interesting to have such cool enemies maybe with laser guns attached to them but in the context of Horizon. ehhr i don't know i don't really care about that game world they built to be honest.

That's a nice showcase of the weather system. The dialog scene at 30sec mark was shown by few youtubers already and there it was sunny and dry.
Yup that has been the best part about all these previews. The same mission has been shown at different TODs and different weather conditions by different ppl and it all looks so wonderful. Each has a different mood and yet seems hand made to perfection.

I was suddenly reminded of this: Wasn't Enslaved just like this???? An odyssey through a post apocalyptic world full of robot animals u fight using primitive weapons ! :O

Yes it's very reminiscent of Enslaved in concept at least. Very different execution though, and no robo dinos

Bethesda sells tens of millions of janky-ass, terribly written open world RPGs with last decade levels of animation tech. My guess is people are not going to give much of a shit unless the rest of the game isn't good.
Besides, Guerilla has never managed to tell a tale that was worth giving as much as a single fuck about, so I don't get what's so suprising here. I'm actually thankful the Dutch developer hasn't fallen in line with Sony's first party dev lineup of enlightened film enthusiasts who have to begrudgingly dress up their tv dramas with a couple of button prompts every now and then. They still seem to care about making games.

I have not played FALLOUT or TES for a very long time. Despite the high sales figures they have the worst game engine that I know. No idea what they are doing. I find that embarrassing that despite such high sales figures they deliver such a thing.

In any case, I will not buy a game with the Creation Engine.

By the way, I'm expecting Detroit with excitement.

I too noticed the twitchy freaky faces and characters when I first saw it all. It instantly pops at u and makes u wince. But If ppl can play Fallout 3 and 4 and Skyrim with its wooden ppl, I am sure ppl can play this too. Atleast the gameplay here seems to refined and solid and not just about depleting a health bar.
I feel if the gfx set an atmosphere and tone good enough, ppl forget the discrepancies. I couldn't play Fallout 3 because of the wooden ppl, still haven't but the world loved it because ithad a consistent atmosphere and the rest is anyways all about the gameplay !
Look at UC4, mindblowing characters but had no holding power over me because after the initial wows and oohs and aahs what I want is a fun game in the end. (again ppl love that too )

In my opinion, the game would be better without these scenes. It may be less content but a constant quality.

I like the gameplay so far but I also have no problem with open world games. In fact I even prefer open world over linear games.

Nevertheless, I find many of the ordinary scenes not compelling.

I think the random NPC dialogues are in generally not so good. Not only from a technical point of view but also for writing. Let's see how such scenes will be in Mass Effect Andromeda.

I also do not like it when the worst texture is emanated. But this is a mission and I have fears that there will be several of them. It is a mission which someone important must have accepted.

Resistively considered the technique of LA Noire was a bust.

The NPCs look good in Horizon. The problem is the animations. At the moment I find the animations in ME Andromeda even a little better. Not good but average.

EDIT: However the other new examples I find bad.

________

I'm sorry but I do not have enough time to answer so many. Therefore I finished my contribution to this topic. I will still read possible answers but for the moment I will not write anything about this NPC topic again.

You're embarrassed that you don't don't know what Bethesda are doing? If you are actually Todd Howard then that would keep me up at night, otherwise it wouldn't worry me! :nope:

This happened to me on occasion when playing GTA V on a 16Gb, 4.4Ghz 6700K, Geforce 1080 equipped PC. Sometimes, shit just happens and you get served a crappy texture. :yep2: Personally I worry more about President Trump but YMMV.

I think animations are going to continue to be a problem for a long time to come. You either capture motions for durations so long that loops are not perceptible or you capture the important stuff and simulate the rest. I do sympathise with you that a shoddy texture or animation could ruin your enjoyment of a game, though. This must diminish a lot of great experiences that you could otherwise been enjoying.

But I played Pong, PacMan, Defender and Missile Command in the arcade, so I appreciate how far technology has brought us and can easily overlook the flaws that technology, or creative/productive processes have yet to solve.

Sorry, but there's nothing that look as bad as this in Zero Dawn (1min37) :

Don't confuse VO and facial animation.

Snowy environment looks so photorealistic, the HDR would look bonkers.

A pretty big jump in quality over TW3's snow I's say.

Man, some of the other ALoy concept art has so much more cheer and charm. I hate how the world just goes for badasses over cheerful characters.

If they went too cartoney with the main character, entire world would need to be shifted in to the more artsy and over the top side [like Enslaved world was].

I like the balance they made with this version we are getting now. People look realistic but are still a bit over the top [they are wearing a lot of comicbooky machine accessories], and the world looks realistic and lush but it has robotic and postapocalyptic elements all over it.

That sells. Gravity Rush 2 went for a cheerful/feminine MC and it only really sold in Japan... I bet you this is one of the main reasons we don't see more feminine/cute female main characters (like Kat).

Edit: Although in the context of Horizon I think Aloy seems perfectly fine, considering there's little room for playfulness(contrary to Gravity Rush).
